Mariposa Elementary Third Grade Class Wins Educational Materials

Mariposa Elementary 3rd grade teacher, Ron Smith, won educational supplies for his entire class just by answering a few questions! His students received bags that included two books published by Port St. Lucie Utility Systems: Water Hugs and Who is Francis FOGberg?, plus Water Cycle Wristband and Toilet Paper Roll Rainbow Windsock Activity Kits, and lots more. Music with Mr. Evans at Mariposa Elementary

Mariposa Elementary music students have been participating in creative musical activities and competitive games that help promote music literacy. For the month of November, students have been focused on developing their rhythm skills. From keeping a steady beat in kindergarten to freestyling over rap beats in fifth grade, students are mastering how sound works together with time to create music. Mariposa Elementary’s Story Book Character Day

Mariposa Elementary School’s teachers and students celebrated Storybook Character Day with a parade. They showcased their favorite storybooks and dressed as their favorite characters. In the classrooms, students read their stories to each other, and enjoyed some treats. Our virtual students, Danna Sooknanan and Amiyah Kokayi participated during this special day. Mr. Logue and Ms. Patton dressed up as their favorite story book character as well. We even had Colonel Sanders (Tyler Rubenstein) come visit Mariposa with his autobiography. It was a great day for literacy fun (and dressing up!) at our school.

Mariposa Elementary Celebrates Unity Day

On Unity Day, Mariposa students and staff wore orange to show that they are together against bullying, and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Kindergartner, Nia Johnson, is pointing out our United for Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Sign. Mariposa students worked on Project Connect which connects orange strips of paper to create a chain. Project Connect joins students, schools, and communities to make a powerful statement about uniting against bullying. The Project Connect chains are showcased in the cafeteria. Mariposa Elementary’s Gardening Scientists

At Mariposa Elementary, students in second grade got a chance to try out their observation skills by taking a trip to the school garden. Students used tools such as rulers and measuring tapes to measure the new sprouts. Then, they recorded their observations in their science journals. Great job Monarchs!!    

Pre-Kindergarten at Mariposa Elementary is Building Sentences

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Bonilla’s Pre-Kindergarten class answered the following focus question during literacy centers: How do we build sentences? The students spoke about sentences being made up of words and how some can be short, and some can be long. Students were shown a photograph where they needed to use vocabulary to explain what was happening in the photo. Afterwards as a team, they would agree on a sentence and Mrs. Bonilla would then write each word on a post it. Each child would then put a “post it” on a building block. Mariposa’s Second Graders Investigates Matter

At Mariposa Elementary, second grade students conducted science investigations in groups to classify the different kinds of materials by their physical properties by making root beer floats. Students observed and explained how the three states of matter went through a chemical change. When the (liquid) root beer was poured on the (solid) ice cream, it foamed up into a (gas) or bubbles. Mariposa Elementary Partners with Fort Pierce Westwood Academy

Third grade students at Mariposa Elementary worked in partnership with the Fort Pierce Westwood Academy students.  Collin Heatherington, Devin Gorzong, Wendy Zepadta, Zhanè B, Allison Kholer, Lena Shingledecker, Julia Haney, Samantha Watson, Clovis Wilson, and Nayeli Fernandez built four raised garden beds for their fellow Mariposa Monarchs.  Students across the campus will participate in the care of the gardening beds. Many farm to table activities will be conducted which directly connect to the ELA, math, science and social studies standards. Mariposa Elementary’s Storybook Character Day

It was a great day for literacy fun (and dressing up) at our school.    

Mariposa Elementary Visits Barnes and Noble

Mariposa Elementary’s  reading night at Barnes and Noble was a huge success. There were stories, cookies, and surprises. Catarina Rodriguez is reading a book before Storytime. Jeremiah Grant and Logan Elliott are listening to Principal R. Craig Logue read We don’t eat our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins. Mariposa will have its next Barnes and Noble  reading night Tuesday, December 17. Please plan to come for the fun!

Mariposa Elementary Celebrated Empowerment

Mariposa Elementary celebrated “Empowerment” which is a Social and Emotional Learning theme. Mariposa Monarchs Buddy Read Their First SSYRA Book

First Graders at Mariposa Elementary are enjoying the 2019-2020 Sunshine State Young Reader Award Junior books. Mia Romero and Isabella Cruz are buddy reading their first SSYRA book. They are best friends and are looking forward to reading all 15 of the books this year.

Mariposa Elementary Celebrates the 100 Mile Club®

At Mariposa Elementary, students in grades 2-5 joined in our 100 Mile Club® which was organized by our PE teacher, Mrs. Adriana Roberts. Whether the students ran, jogged, or walked towards their personal goals, the 100 Mile Club® inspired students of all abilities to be active in an accepting, positive, and inclusive environment. Michael Resendiz-Torres, Gabriel Barahona, Yadiel Tavarez and Jaistyn Thurston ran or walked more than 100 miles each.  This year, Mariposa Elementary students walked more than 8,000 miles.  This was a great achievement for all of the students.

Mariposa Elementary VPK Explores Sentence Structure

In Ms. Bonilla’s VPK class at Mariposa Elementary, students have been discussing what sentences are, the parts of a sentence, and how to build a sentence. Students were given a sentence on a strip, completed some shared reading, and went around their tables reading each of the sentences. The students were able to pick up on the pattern of “I can” and decode words by looking at a visual. Afterwards, they rebuillt their sentences since they had been deconstructed. Author Keith Lawrence Roman Visits Mariposa Elementary

Author Keith Lawrence Roman visited Mariposa Elementary this week. He presented his books to the students and talked about what it takes to be an author. He discussed imagination as the key to writing. Student Evan is holding one of Keith Lawrence Roman’s most popular books, I Sat Beside an Elephant.  Student Trey asked the author a question about being an author. Student Chason was so proud to have his book signed by the author.  Thank you for visiting our school!      

Mariposa Elementary Attends All County Chorus

In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, Mr. Chad Guess took a group of Mariposa students to the All County Chorus which was held at Lincoln Park Academy.  Radley Yackamouih, Alexis Whyms, Karina Arocho, Nathalie Carrion, Szofi Viskolcz, and Celeste Swanson sang with students from other St. Lucie Public Schools during the annual All County Chorus event.

Mariposa Elementary’s PreK Explores CVC Words

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Bonilla’s students continue to work on sounding out words and identifying the individual letters of a Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) word. This week they discussed things they can build, and one of the items mentioned was being able to build words! Students were given alphabet blocks and instructed to build certain words by sounding out, after finding their CVC word, they wrote the following sentence “I can build words.”  Next, they wrote their word and drew a picture. Mariposa Elementary’s VPK Explores Patterns

At Mariposa Elementary,  Mrs. Bonilla’s VPK is working on learning about patterns. They have already learned about AB patterns and now they have moved to working on ABB patterns. Arianna Lopez, Charles Sloan, Hunter Schultz, Annahisha Charles, and Cristian Gomez were provided with visuals and hands on examples. Then they were given counting squares so that they could work on making an ABB pattern individually.  

Mariposa Elementary Celebrates our Military

On November 28, Mariposa Elementary had an assembly to honor men and women who have served and those who are currently serving in the United States Military.  Our students were encouraged to invite a family member or friend who is a Veteran or currently serving to attend this assembly. During the program, a group of Veterans came to speak to the students. Mr. Chad Guess had his Mariposa Marching Band Drumline put on an amazing performance.
