Mariposa Elementary Celebrates Literacy with a Book Fair Scavenger Hunt

To celebrate literacy, some of Mariposa Elementary’s 4th and 5th graders participated in a scavenger hunt during the book fair. The hunt comprised of finding historical fiction books, graphic novels, authors with the same letter as their own name, friendship books, and many more finds. Gianni Filippini and Lauren Rocha are seen here recording their answers for the hunt. The top students to complete the scavenger hunt received a prize of their choice from the book fair.  

Samuel S. Gaines Academy Multicultural Showcase

Colt Nation’s fourth grade kicked off its November theme of diversity and inclusion with a multicultural showcase. It was all hands on deck as administrators, teachers, and staff dazzled students with their heartwarming stories and shared experiences. In anticipation of this event, students researched diverse cultures, created personal artifacts, and deepened their application of their Leader in Me habits. The showcase served as a beautiful reminder of unity in action!

Forest Grove Students are #1 in Florida and Georgia on Reading Plus

Mrs. Redic’s 4th period Critical Thinking class at Forest Grove Middle School was the middle school winner of the Reading Plus Race to 21 Competition. The class completed 1094 reading lessons with 660 of them scoring above 80%. That is an average of 60 lessons per student since the beginning of the school year. Congratulations Mrs. Redic’s Class!

Samuel S. Gaines Academy Free Book Fair

The Children’s Services Council, in conjunction with United Way, provided all students at Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies with THREE books. All students got to walk through our upcoming “Free Book Fair” to select their books. Representatives from both agencies joined Superintendent E. Wayne Gent to present books to all of our 1st graders. Students were so excited to be gifted with these books! The books were provided through the St. Lucie Reads Initiative. We are so grateful to have been included in this program.

Morningside’s Morning Service

On Sunday, November 7th, the Port St. Lucie Jaguar Battalion presented the Colors to honor all the Veterans during Morningside Church’s morning service. Commanding the Color Guard was National Flag Bearer Cadet Major Mery Fuentes accompanied by Cadet Major Elena Garcia as the State Flag Bearer, Cadet Captain Kristian St.Vil as a right guard, and Cadet Major Christopher Penate as the left guard.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County is Opening During School Holidays

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County (BGCSLC) is opening its doors for non-members during school holidays. The single day drop-in service is free to members and only $20 for non-members at the Westside Club location at 3361 S. Jenkins Road in Fort Pierce. Southport Middle School Sixth Grade Service Projects

Southport Middle School students focused on a variety of service projects throughout the year. Teams from each grade level selected projects that students chose together that inspired them and benefited the community. The sixth grade Marlins team chose to continue the Adopt a Street service project to help keep Port St. Lucie beautiful. Students from the team meet once a month to pick up litter on the streets around the campus. Mariposa Elementary’s Storybook Character Day

Mariposa Elementary School’s teachers and students celebrated Storybook Character Day with a parade. They showcased their favorite storybooks and dressed as their favorite characters. In the classrooms, students read their stories to each other, and enjoyed some treats. Mrs. Whitaker and Ms. Patton along with the admin team dressed up as their favorite story book character from the story Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Mariposa Elementary’s STEM Day- Saving Fred

Mariposa participated in a school-wide STEM activity prepared by our Science Committee. The goal was to “Save Fred” with a partner using only four paper clips. The students could not touch Fred, the boat, or the life preserver directly with their hands! If they did, they needed to start from the beginning. This encouraged the students to collaborate, test, retest, and reflect. The students needed to describe, prepare a flow chart, and answer post questions to explain how they saved Fred. Northport and Oak Hammock Visit Westwood Ag and Vet Programs

Fort Pierce Westwood Academy Agriscience and Veterinary Assisting students hosted virtual field trips. Northport K8 and Oak Hammock K8 students stayed in their classrooms and via Microsoft Teams they visited the Ag and Vet programs! The high school students shared info about the programs, highlighted their classroom labs and equipment, while the middle school students asked great questions. St. Lucie Medical Center Physician’s Virtual DEI Presentation for Health Science Students

Physicians and Medical Residents from St. Lucie Medical Center hosted a virtual Diversity Equity and Inclusion forum for St. Lucie Public School (SLPS) Health Science students. Students heard directly from our local experts on what it takes to be a physician and the suggested steps current high school students may take to achieve their goals! Thank you to Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, Dr. Tim McNamara, and Dr. Kara Mann for putting this session together for over 90 SLPS Health Science students.  

TCHS AFJROTC “Packs the House” with Treasure Coast Food Bank

Treasure Coast High School AFJROTC Cadets participated in a community service project titled Pack the House. They made holiday care packages for families in need to have meals during Thanksgiving. In each box, cadets stuffed a variety of canned and dry foods for those who may not be able to afford them themselves. Twenty-five cadets completed about 4,000 care packages in total with all the other volunteers that participated to achieve their goal of 15,000 packages. Fort Pierce Central High (FPC) and Embry Riddle Aerospace Institute students hosted virtual field trip at FPC.  Northport K8 and Gaines Academy K8 students stayed in their classrooms and via Microsoft Teams were able to tour the FPC classroom highlighted by a live drone demonstration!

PSLHS Tech Design Visits A-1 Apprenticeship

Port St. Lucie High School’s Technical Design students virtually visited A-1 Truss to hear how their high school class is connected to A-1’s apprenticeship. Dawn Riccardi at CareerSource Research Coast, Jeremy Tichenor, and Jason at A-1 Truss presented and answered questions from the high school students.

PBPA Press-Starting a Tradition

Performance Based Preparatory Academy has created a student-led newspaper. The PBPA Press released its first issue this past October and the students are scheduled to release one issue per quarter. All articles and topics are student-generated. October’s articles ranged from school updates, Hispanic Heritage Month, human trafficking, for or against masks, dealing with anxiety, and being a teen parent.
