Southport Middle School’s Math Coach Kathleen Manchester selected Laura Barco-Garcia, and Media Specialist Angela Mas selected Michael Lovejoy as student representatives to meet with and ask questions of Superintendent E. Wayne Gent. Both the teachers and students enjoyed their lunch with other teachers and selected students from around the county.
In honor of Veterans Day 2015, Oak Hammock K-8 celebrated and honored all of their personal heroes. The wall of stars represent the friends and family members of the Oak Hammock staff and students that have served in the military. Ribbons were attached to the stars to represent special circumstances. Red = Killed in Action; White = career/extended service; Blue = became a law enforcement officer or fireman when they returned; Yellow = still serving. Students in Mrs. Cassie Migliore’s 1st Grade class are studying the literacy theme “Now and Long Ago.” The students read about the homes and schools long ago and decided to see if they could write like they did back then. The students used feathers as quills to try to write their names. The students were also able to model and build Indian teepees from paper bags and decorate them with symbols they learned about.
Casie Schulz and Bailey Layle, two 8th grade SLWK-8 Shark chefs, are preparing Red Velvet Roulades for the District Culinary Showcase to be held at the St. Lucie County Civic Center on Wednesday December 9th from 5 to 7 PM. Their teacher is Ms. Jennifer Tremblay.
Awesome! Fantastic! Fun! Just some of the adjectives used to describe the Gaines Academy First Annual Turkey Bowl. Thursday evening’s night of family fun featured games, arts and crafts, face painting, cake walks, relay races, cheerleading instructions, and a Scholastic Book Fair. All of this took place while guests were serenaded by the impressive SGA Band. The featured event of the evening was a chance to win a turkey. Principal Felicia Nixon and Assistant Principal Heather Stanford-Clark announced the Teacher of the Year, Distinguished Minority Educator, Outstanding First Year Teacher, and School Related Employee nominees during the Eagle News Morning Show. The entire school campus celebrated the phenomenal instructional/behavioral contributions of Ms. Dumont (TOY), Ms. Dennis (DME), Ms. Thiery (OFYT-not pictured), and Ms. Tucker (SRE). The Eagles wish them the best as they compete at the district level!
Northport Principal Glenn Rustay and Northport Media Specialist Lynne Gruszka proudly accept one of the most valuable gifts that a military hero can bestow, the Purple Heart. Dr. Miles J. Gill Jr., a local Vietnam Veteran and paratrooper has dedicated his father’s Purple Heart to the children of Northport K-8 School. The Purple Heart was earned by Sgt. Miles J. Gill Sr., 1 Company, 311 Infantry, 78 Division at the Field Hospital in Germany during World War II. The Purple Heart was pinned to Sgt. Gill’s chest in his hospital bed in January of 1945. Social studies and ELA educators from St. Lucie participated in the Echoes and Reflections Holocaust training. The training was provided by the Holocaust Task Force organized by Linda Medvin, Director of the FAU Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education. The engaging presentation was lead by Stephanie McMahon Kaye from Yad Vashem. “I found this training to be an eye opening and engaging experience. Mrs. Kari McIntyre’s Kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed Apple Center Day! The children had a wonderful time using their 5 senses to explore apples. Mrs. McIntyre spent 3-weeks having the students learn about the 5-senses, specifically what, why, and how we use them. Through reading, writing, science, and math, the children were able to explore apples and create apple projects based on their findings. In the picture, Ayva Bonacchi is sharing her apple project with her grandmother, Dorothy Bonacchi. It was a fun day of learning!
The students at Southern Oaks enjoyed a couple of weeks of book fun at their annual fall Scholastic Book Fair. Thanks to our students, teachers and staff we received $2,126.89 in free books! We could not have done it without the help of our Southern Oaks family. Students enjoyed the new titles offered in our book fair. Michael Schmitt was one of our best shoppers. He enjoyed our selection of historical and military books. We love to see our students excited about books.
The PBIS team of Samuel S. Gaines Academy is striving to engage kids in positive behaviors. When students follow the “SGA Way” which is the school-wide expectations to Stay Safe, Give Respect and Act Responsibly, they earn “Colt Cash.” Colt Cash can be used for special events and “Chance to Win” drawings. The PBIS team sponsors monthly drawings for grade groups K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Each group contains items donated by school personnel or community partners. Bayshore Elementary School was presented with the American Flag by the family of Captain Matthew Shields. For many years, Mrs. Debbie Gonzalez’s first grade class has sent letters and cards to Captain Matthew Shields and other members of his unit. Captain Shields’ grandmother, Lauran Griffith (longtime Bayshore volunteer), presented a flag that was flown over Syria and Iraq in appreciation for the continuous support that the unit received. Mrs. Wolff’s kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary is learning about the states of matter. Prince Boatswain and Olivia Thrasher were excited to see a cool transformation. The students measured, felt, smelled, observed and discussed the white grainy solid that was placed on their plates. They discussed how it could change shape. Then water was added to their teaspoon amount of grainy powder and “POOF” the powder transformed 100% in size forming snow. As part of Bayshore Elementary School’s Bullying Prevention Campaign, students had the opportunity to hear from Joe the Biker! Joe the Biker shared his own experiences with students to teach the importance of standing up to bullying and how to get help within their school and community.
The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion proudly supported the Port Saint Lucie Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. The Jaguar cadets provided an Honor Formation during the ceremony, Color Guard, and a tap ceremony. Lieutenant Colonel (USA Ret.) Nevarez was one of the guest speakers who gave an amazing speech. The Jaguars worked in unison with Treasure Coast High School Air Force JROTC, and other organizations for the posting of the colors. The cadets gave an outstanding presentation overall. The Jaguar Battalion greatly appreciates and salutes all of the veterans, and their sacrifices to our nations.
Learning about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics along with a splash of the arts (STE@M) makes students want to sing and dance. From a scientific point of view, the previous two trials (AKA previous two annual Rap Battles), support the hypothesis that the 3rd annual STE@M Rap Battle will play to another full house at the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce on Friday, November 20th at 7 P.M.
