St. Lucie West K8 students learn about math theory

St. Lucie West K-8 eighth grade students have found a unique way to learn about the Pythagorean theorem, by putting their problems down on the sidewalks around school! Not only did the students in Carol Matulonis’ class learn about the mathematical theorem, but students viewing their artwork were able to see how it works. Mosaic Digital Academy keeps virtual students engaged with real-world experiences

Virtual students often express feelings of isolation as they school from home, but not Mosaic Digital Academy students! The St. Lucie school team is committed to keeping students tethered, with live, engaging lessons and live experiences around the beautiful community, promoting a well-rounded student life. Volunteer Orientation at Palm Pointe

Karol Carvelli, Volunteer Coordinator at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, recently met with all the volunteers for this school year to orient them on the new on-line application system.  They also reviewed the volunteer expectations at the school while enjoying morning coffee and sweet rolls.

Florida Engineering Society Teacher of the Year

Lincoln Park Academy’s “Project Lead The Way” teacher, Mark Hueter, was named the “Florida Engineering Society’s 2013 K-12 Teacher of the Year” at their annual event on August 2, 2013. Treasure Coast Chapter President Adam Schildmeier nominated Mr. Hueter for creatively  incorporating and promoting engineering and technology concepts and activities into his classroom, truly engaging students and promoting critical thinking. Mariposa Elementary students learn matter matters

Students in Maria Nunez’s fourth grade class at Mariposa Elementary are studying matter. Pictured, from left, Joslyn Patterson, Sydney Luppens, Faith White, Taline El-Khoury, Alanna Riverahad were asked to measure the  volume and mass of objects. Each station had a different activity exploring matter. For example, at one station, students had to find the volume of an irregular object using water displacement. Students were engaged and learned how to work as a team.

F. K. Sweet students study the elements of art

Pictured, from left, F. K. Sweet Elementary School fourth grade students Tanyia Chery, Emma Brosnihan, Calvin Bowens, and Quinlen Meservey have been working with the elements of art to create the cover of their sketchbooks. The elements include the study of line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. The students used all the elements except value and form to create their designs. The students use their sketchbooks throughout the school year to practice their drawing skills, take notes, and for some writing assignments to enhance the academics.

Northport K-8 participates in community event

Northport K-8 School ponied up lots of great fellowship, money and bowling skills to assist Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County in their efforts to raise much needed funds for the organization’s mentoring and literacy programs. The Northport team consisted of teachers, administrators, friends and family members, as well as lots of cheerleading and support from family and friends. The event raised $36,000 to enhance the program as well as a good old fashioned birthday celebration for Dr. Judi Miller, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters and long time champion of St. Lucie County children and families. The event was a … Read More

Northport Media Center promotes pride one flag at a time

Each year, Northport K-8 School presents a tribute to the tragedy of September 11, 2001.  This year the school hosted retired New York City detective and First Responder Albert Hickey, St. Lucie County firefighter Gary Hollett, and many veteran Partners in Education from across the county. This year, Detective Hickey spoke of seeing only a handful of American flags while driving on his way to visit the school for the program. Students at the program expressed to Detective Hickey that they needed an American flag. Dan McCarty School to celebrate 60 years

Dan McCarty school will celebrate its 60th birthday on Nov. 9, 2013. All former and present faculty and students are invited to come to the gym and reminisce. The gym is an original building and holds many memories for students and faculty alike. The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. and continue on in the cafeteria with refreshments and a slideshow.

St. Lucie School Board adopts texting while driving proclamation

Communications giant AT&T and over 200 other companies are urging drivers to pledge not to text while driving. September 19, 2013 was designated as a national “Drive 4 Pledges Day”. Drivers across the country were asked to sign pledges to refrain from texting while driving. The St. Lucie County School Board adopted the “Drive 4 Pledges Day” proclamation at its September 10, 2013 meeting. Allapattah Flats third graders enjoy science for fun

Third grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 School have been studying scientific investigations. To get the students excited about science as well as to practice the scientific procedures, teachers and students conducted a scientific investigation using Diet Coke and Mentos. The students enjoyed seeing the experiment and it reinforced their skills and encouraged them to hypothesize, write detailed steps, and write a conclusion. Fort Pierce Central culinary students experience lifetime learning trip

Allapattah Flats families learn about Title I programs, curriculum options

Allapattah Flats students test household items for fire safety

Allapattah Flats fifth grade students use the steps of the scientific method to determine which household items, such as nail polish remover, vinegar, and tiki torch fluid, would continue to burn when put in water. This activity enhanced students’ learning about scientific inquiry and also prepared them for creating their own scientific investigations.
