Manatee Academy K8 School Vet Prep students and their parents recently visited Fort Pierce Westwood High School’s Veterinary Assisting Facility. Westwood’s Career and Tech Ed (CTE) Vet Assisting and Agricultural Biotech students hosted the campus visit, along with instructors Lisa Davenport and Charles Paschal, with the support of Westwood’s ninth grade counselor Monarae Buchanon. Students from Rivers Edge Elementary School opened the May School Board Meeting with songs from the musical, Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book – Kids.    

Cary Schott, Art Specialist at Frances K. Sweet Elementary, and Janey MacArthur, retired from Westwood High School, volunteered for an Empty Bowls program event recently at the Downtown Farmers’ Market of Fort Pierce. Students from several schools made and painted bowls to sell and raise money for the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Pictured, from left, are Ms. Schott and Ms. McArthur.

Under the direction of Zachary Maes, the students from West Gate K-8 School chorus gave a special performance during the February 12, 2019 School Board Meeting. The students opened the meeting with a performance that was a treat for everyone in attendance.

Students were engaged as they learned about the cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans.    

Students at Windmill Point Elementary decorated surprise Mother’s Day cakes as part of  the school’s PBS fundraiser. Students enjoyed making their own special cakes with the help of cafeteria staff to honor the  significant person in their lives.  Many, many thanks to Publix for always supporting students!

The golf club at F.K. Sweet Elementary is part of the partnership between St. Lucie Public Schools and the PGA. Students, pictured from left Keith Colley, David McDaniel, Jerry Johnson, Lance Fleschner, and Michael Mangeri, met once a week for eight weeks to develop and practice skills need for beginners and intermediate players.  Along with the technical aspects of the game, students also learned the golf rules of etiquette.  All of the students, who were taught by the golf pros at PGA, celebrated the final week with an awards banquet at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition. Students visiting the media center at Mariposa Elementary School are learning how to use Powerpoint to help present their research projects.  Students are taught by media specialist Charlotte Pennington on how to create powerful slide presentations by using photos, clipart, music, audio recordings, text, and animation to help make their research project come alive.  Many of the projects created in the media center will be used in the morning news show, WingsTV, for all to view.   

Students in Tammy  Davis’ second grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary display candy apples they created after observing a hands-on demonstration by a candy company. Students made various colors of red, green, and yellow.  Afterwards they wrote a how-to paragraph on making their delicious treats.  

At Southport Middle School, students in Jessica Allen’s seventh grade science class from the Panthers team work with students from the Hornets team. The students had the opportunity to see the different types of volcanic eruptions with different types of sodas (regular and diet) and mentos. The students estimated the distance of the height of the eruption after putting the mentos into the soda bottle and graphed the results to determine the reaction of each type of soda.

To celebrate National School Breakfast Week, Cafeteria Manager Maria Coellos-Mayz and Manager Intern Diana Crosdale dressed up to welcome students to school on Monday to highlight the importance of a healthy breakfast each morning.  Students were definitely excited to enter the cafeteria on Monday and see what a wonderful breakfast the cafeteria staff had prepared for them.

Murals and models of the ocean floor were created by the students in the challenge program at Frances K. Sweet Elementary. Students worked cooperatively on a class mural diagramming features of the ocean floor and the animals that live there. Morningside Elementary’s fifth grade student-led conferences received high marks on evaluation forms.  Write-in comments included feedback such as “very informative” and “it was great.”  During the 30-minute conference, parents and students were shown how to access the St. Lucie Public Schools website; the MSE website; the Skyward site; and lastly, the 5th grade 2017 t-shirt, “Think Outside the Box,” was revealed.
