Students support the United Way

Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently held a fund raiser for the United Way. On Monday students brought in pennies, followed by nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, and quarters on Thursday. For the grand finale on Friday students were allowed to have a No Dress Code Day for one dollar. Pictured is a group of third grade girls sporting their “weekend” clothes.

Students study Earth and enjoy edible Earth treats

Students in Lisa McGuire’s third grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary have been learning about the Earth and its layers.  They made a book that included a diagram of the inside of the earth and then created edible earths.  Caleb Militello, left, and Brett Adelman are enjoying their tasty treat.

Students, staff at Gaines Academy enjoy Multicultural Day

Students at Samuel Gaines Academy decorated and setup their pods with cultural information, artistic design, musical, and cuisine, for the annual Multicultural Day. This event was very successful with enthusiastic participation from teachers, parents and students alike. Students at each grade level researched a specific country to display in their pod. Pictured are sixth grade teachers Missy Lyshon, Robert Plowden, and Elisabeth Kraft with their students displaying their culminative research on Italian culture.

Students sock hop to celebrate 60 years

Dan McCarty School media specialist Diane Laster models clothing from the 1950s in anticipation of the school’s 60th anniversary celebration this weekend. The school opened its doors in 1953. This week, students participated in a 1950’s style sock-hop in the original gym.  Pictured with Ms. Laster is former Dan McCarty social studies teacher Joseph Noel who currently serves at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts.

Mrs. Jones’ class earned their SECOND popcorn party by receiving 10 class compliments when they were showing their S.P.O.T.S.! Whole classes can earn 10 jazzy class cash when receiving a compliment from staff. Congratulations jaguars

Students Showcase Talents at State History Competition

After making their mark at school and district History Day events, St. Lucie Public Schools students traveled to Tallahassee with aspirations of coming home champions. Students Showcase Talents at International and State Competitions

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – As the school year wrapped up, so did the final rounds of academic competitions for science and history. On the international scene, Lincoln Park Academy’s Haniya Shareef reaped a big reward for her plant science project by capturing 4th place in this category. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair draws approximately 1,800 students from 75 countries around the world each year.  This year’s competition was hosted by the city of Los Angeles. Students shine in Sunshine Bowl competition

Twelve students at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently participated in the annual Sunshine Bowl. Four teams competed by answering questions about the 2011-2012 Sunshine Books. Students shine in F.K. Sweet patriotic art contest

F. K. Sweet Elementary School students Shadalou Fernandez, pictured from left, Danielle Murray, Kate Bachmeyer, and Lani’ Chambers were announced as winners in a recent patriotic art contest at the school. Participating students learned the history of many American symbols as they completed their patriotic drawings. Kindergarten, first, and second grade students studied the Liberty Bell, third and fourth grade students learned about the nation’s first flag, and fifth grade students learned about the iconic Rosie The Riveter character from World War II, and also included an essay with their art.

The Career and Technical Education and the Magnet School Assistance Program (MSAP) teams were recognized at the Florida Career Pathways Network conference. Teams presented their own Best Practices in Education during the State’s conference.

Students Shaping Clay and Compassion thru Bowls

Students across St. Lucie County are shaping clay and compassion as they create handmade ceramic bowls to support the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Young artists from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy, Legacy High School, Centennial High School, and Fort Pierce Central High School are joining together for this year’s Annual Empty Bowls event. “This is such an incredible project—for the students to not only share their artwork with the public, but also for the community. Students select books for summer reading

The recent Scholastic Book Fair at F.K. Sweet Elementary was a huge success. Every student received a free book and was able to shop throughout the week.  Parent Maria Mendoza, volunteered several days and is pictured helping Justin Adrian, left, and Caleb Cobb select books for their summer reading.

Students rewarded by bunny hopping

The event was sponsored by the PBS team and rewarded children who met their goals by displaying excellent behavior, positve attitudes, and good manners every day.

Students recreate the past in dioramas

Students in Kasey Ascani’s second grade class at F. K. Sweet Elementary are using their knowledge gained from a field trip to the Fort Pierce Historical Museum to construct dioramas for the St. Lucie County Fair’s school exhibit. During the trip, students learned about life in St. Lucie County during the 1800’s. James Ewing, Samia Ahmed, and Luis Herrera are working together in creating Fort Pierce’s P.B. Cobb general store.

Students Receive Instruments from Bluebird Foundation

The Bluebird Educational Foundation has provided many educational musical trainings and performances to students over the years. In the most recent years, they have started a program called “Recycling in the Key of E.” Donations of old instruments are collected and the instruments are refurbished by a musical partner and then given to a student who is interested in playing in the band at middle school or high school. To date, Bluebird has donated some 50 instruments totaling approximately $20,000 to our students. Students receive great support from paraprofessionals

  ESOL paraprofessional at F.K. Sweet Elementary, David Morales, visits various classrooms throughout the day to assist students. His services are avilable to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. He helps to translate for parents during conferences and other school meetings. ST. Students’ Project Develops and Takes Flight

FORT PIERCE, FL – Students in Mrs. Brandifino’s pre-kindergarten class at Lawnwood Elementary delighted in releasing butterflies into the school’s butterfly garden.  As a springboard for their unit of study, the young scholars learned about the animals’ development and nutritional needs as they morphed from egg, to larva, to pupa, to graceful adult butterfly.  Students clapped and cheered as the butterflies made their way from the butterfly cage to settle on nearby flowers and trees.
