Mrs. Schettini’s 3rd grade AMP (Advanced Math Placement) class is building a thinking classroom—and the energy is contagious! Students are given a challenge, randomly grouped, and encouraged to solve the problem using any strategy they choose. Students thrived through collaboration and sharing their thought processes with one another. Using voice and choice, they were able to use the strategy that truly worked best for them and share it with the group. SLW Centennial Hosts Boot Camp for ELA & History Students

SLW Centennial High School recently held boot camps for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, targeting students in the bottom quartile. The 9th and 10th grade boot camp focused on ELA students, while the 11th grade boot camp was dedicated to History students. We are excited to announce that Caroline Andersen, a senior athlete from SLW Centennial High School, has been chosen to participate in the 15th annual FACA Senior All-Star Flag Football Showcase. Southport Middle School’s Athletic Department held a sports banquet in honor of all our student athletes. Southport’s Athletic Department was created to promote academics through sports and school involvement. The Orlando Science Center Visits Lawnwood

The Orlando Science Center visited for an in-school field trip at Lawnwood Elementary School. 5th-grade students were able to participate in various science labs to deepen their understanding and skills. These hands-on experiences provided students with several real-world examples as connections were made. One example of this was the rollercoaster lab. In the rollercoaster lab, students discussed kinetic and potential energy, friction, and gravity as they considered how rollercoasters move. Students in Mrs. Boham’s STEAM class at SLWK8 designed balloon cars to learn about Newton’s laws of motion, potential and kinetic energy, energy transfer, and alternative fuels. Thanks to our outstanding science teachers, our Sharks already knew all about Newton’s Laws of Motion or Inertia. St. Lucie West K8 middle school students in Mrs. Boham’s STEAM class tried their hand at 3D pens to create tops. Students applied geometric principles to create circles. They divided them into equal parts to create a balanced top to win a spin-off. Students were able to overcome the learning curve by not only using the pens, but finding the right pacing, and finding what surfaces the filament sticks best release from.
