Morningside elementary continues to allow creative expression in the classroom! Students in Mrs. Moore’s third grade class are reading the book “Out of my Mind” where the main character Melody sees color when she hears music. After the Reading FSA, students were allowed to spread out on the floor and colored to the sound of fast and slow music by classical composers. In partnership with the Fort Pierce Lions Club, CAST students composed their artistic interpretations of this year’s International Peace Poster theme: “Together As One.” CAST middle school Visual Arts students were recognized for their participation by our local Fort Pierce Lions Club chapter, which sponsored the event. Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie proudly showcased their talented students during the debut of Arts Week. Fine arts teachers collaborated to create and put on nightly performances. “Scenes and Sounds,” was the premiere of this year’s inaugural annual student film festival presented by The Media Arts Department which included transcendent music from The CAST Band. The Dance Department dazzled the stage with a showcase of various dance styles and techniques. The students in the STEAM Design Challenges classes at Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies (SGAET) just completed their first Design Challenge: Galactic Gliders. Students worked in teams to design a unique hoop glider that would satisfy their client, Mrs. Ima Sorin’s, needs. Students had the chance to design, build, test, redesign and retest prototypes of gliders and then create and present different marketing projects in order to promote their product. The students recorded their data and knowledge learned in their Interactive STEM Notebooks and in their online Canvas course.  

We had an amazing time hosting our Crafts with Counselors event after school! Fifty students joined us for a fun-filled evening of creativity and holiday cheer. Students rotated through craft centers, making Christmas trees out of cones and icing, designing ornaments, and coloring festive pages. They also enjoyed taking pictures in front of a beautiful Christmas backdrop! After the crafts, everyone gathered to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas while enjoying pizza, chips, and drinks. At various points during the school year, Cadets from the JROTC Program have trained on how to administer treatment for various types of situations that require First Aid. This past week, they focused on CPR for both adults and small children. Students received classroom instruction for two days before moving into practical and scenario-based exercises, that served to build their confidence and proficiency in performing the potentially life-saving skill. PE teachers at Southport Middle School taught their students how to do hands-on CPR and what to do in case of a medical emergency. The students also learned how the AED works and where they are located on our campus.  The students worked in teams of 3-4 to practice performing CPR and using the AED. Thank you to the American Heart Association for donating the dummies and the practice AEDs.
