Ms. Roberts’s second grade class learned about two-dimensional figures and their attributes. During their geometry lesson they used toothpicks and marshmallows to make their own 2-dimensional shapes. They found the perimeter and how many vertices each shape has!

Deborah Daly, Personnel Records Specialist, was presented the STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Award at the December 9th School Board Meeting. It is not everyday that our staff is recognized for the kind and thoughtful things they do on a daily basis. Debbie is a quiet and caring employee who works behind the scenes in Personnel. She is not one to draw attention to herself. She is a genuine caring and compassionate individual. On May 23 and 24, 2019, 13 Creative Arts Academy musical theatre students presented the musical comedy “Dear Edwina Jr” in the historic CAST auditorium. Presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International, the musical follows the story of Edwina Spoonapple who seeks to impress a talent agent in order to feel success comparable to the success of her siblings. Performed with spectacular lights and sound, the show was applauded by both adults and students alike.
The Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie Musical Theatre proudly presents the coming-of-age musical “Dear Edwina Jr.” Performances will be held on May 23 and May 24, 2019 in the Creative Arts Academy Historic Auditorium. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. For quite some time, Dean Wallman and Dean Damas have implemented a unique approach we proudly call “Deans on Wheels.” While they continue to manage responsibilities from their offices, they also travel throughout grade level pods and hallways with mobile carts, bringing discipline directly to students and classrooms. The Speakers Bureau Special Guest at Dale Cassens Educational Complex was Mr. Octavius Robinson, a Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA) for St. Lucie County Public Schools. Mr. Robinson told the students that DCEC was the first school he ever taught at when he became a teacher in 2007. At the time he taught science and social studies and he was also the named the First Year Teacher of the Year at that school. United Way of St. Lucie County will be hosting its annual Day of Caring on October 12th. Last year over 400 volunteers completed 16 projects! United Way is currently recruiting volunteers. This year, registration will be online. There are two (2) different registration options: individual and team. Registration link can be found at: https://www.unitedwayslc.org/day-caring-2019. In the month of December, Manatee Academy K-8 truly dashed through December with holiday cheer, creating meaningful moments for both staff and students to pause, connect, and celebrate the season. At the heart of the experience was a special holiday room designed with intention and warmth. On January 7th, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) visited Oak Hammock K‑8 for a memorable and inspiring presentation centered on the creation and purpose of the Braille American Flag. This special flag, crafted with raised elements and Braille text, was thoughtfully designed so that individuals who are blind or visually impaired can fully experience the meaning, symbolism, and pride of the American flag through touch. Representatives from DAR shared stories about the flag’s development and its importance in honoring accessibility. Dan McCarty Middle School teamed up with the City of Port St. Lucie Water Department to provide our AVID students with an exciting event. Students were able to test out their semester-long water tower projects by competing for $2000 in prizes. Each water tower had to be created within weight, height, and budget restrictions and were tested to withstand water intake and flow back out. It was amazing to see our future engineers at work. Thank you, Pierre, Louiza, and the rest of the Water Department team, for helping to make this such a special day for our sixth-graders!
The second annual District Project Citizen Showcase was held recently at Samuel S. Gaines Academy. Middle and K-8 schools presented their best projects developed by students in their seventh grade civics classes. The projects highlight a solution to a school or community public policy problem. The projects demonstrate extensive research, writing, collaboration, and application of civic knowledge in a student-developed project. The top six entries (three from each St. Lucie County Congressional district), will be displayed in Tallahassee at the State Capitol and selected projects will then advance to the state showcase in Orlando later this spring. The top prize in the Group Website category went to Dan McCarty students, Tiferne Jean, Jr., Jesus Hurtado, and Hakeem Jean-Baptiste for their excellent interpretation of George Washington’s “Leadership and Legacy,” hence, this year’s National History Day (NHD) theme. NHD makes history come alive for students by engaging them in the discovery of the historical, cultural, and social experiences of the past. The students tackled the task of selecting a historical figure that demonstrated great leadership and left a profound legacy.
