Gaines Academy Designing Ankle Orthosis

Mr. MacKenzie’s Project Lead the Way class at Samuel S Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies is working on an Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) in PLTW class. The students are tasked with designing, building and testing a AFO as a prototype for children with Cerebral Palsy. The students are to use the materials given by the teacher to create the prototype and then present their build and how it works all while following the criteria given.  

Gaines Academy Continues AFO Development

Mr. MacKenzie’s Project Lead the Way class continues to work on their Ankle Foot Orthosis prototype to aid children with Cerebral Palsy. Their job was to create an Ankle/Foot Orthosis that prevented children with Cerebral Palsy from walking on their tippy-toes and supported the whole foot and lower leg. They are in the trial and error portion of the build where students were figuring out the best way to develop their AFO for stability, comfort, and structure.  

Gaines Academy celebrates special day

Gaines Academy celebrates great readers

Samuel S. Gaines Academy is proud to acknowledge the following students for reading all 15 Sunshine State Young Reader’s books for the year. Gaines Academy AVID students learn teambuilding

AVID students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at Samuel S. Gaines spent a day at Broward College’s Tigertail Lakes activity center. Students participated in high ropes course, low ropes course, and teambuilding activities throughout the course of the day. The trip was designed to strengthen collaborative and critical thinking skills within grade levels. Gaines Academy at the SLC STEM Fair

Mr. MacKenzie, Project Lead The Way instructor, accompanied five student scientists from Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies to the 2021/2022 SLC Regional STEM Fair. These young ladies worked very hard to prepare their projects to be presented to the judges. Their topics ranged from Engineering to Microbiology. The day was busy with presentations as well as media interviews which was new and exciting to these middle-schoolers. The students did very well and are looking forward to hearing the results from the judging.

Gaines Academy & Alpha Phi Alpha Participate in Clean-Up Day

On Saturday, October 9, 2021, Wynsten Dessources(student) and Ms. Kelly Lynch(teacher) from Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. to participate in Fort Pierce Community Clean Up Day.  Mr. Dessources is an 8th grader and is Vice President of the Student Council Lighthouse Team.

Gaines Academy 5th Grade Flag Leadership

The 5th GRADE FLAG LEADERSHIP INIATIVE was started based on the administration’s vision to create a system in which a daily ceremony occurs of raising and lowering the American and FL State flag daily. Identifying 5th grade as the chosen grade for this initative would build leadership capacity with our older elementary age students. Students were taught the proper procedures for folding and caring for the flags. Gaines 4th Grade Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest

We are proud of our outstanding 4th grade students at Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies. Gaines 2nd Graders WIG Wall

Samuel Gaines of Emerging Technologies 2nd graders have created their Wildly Important Goals (WIG) wall. The students are super excited to track and monitor their progress and growth towards their wildly important goals in the number of sight words read, reading fluency and iReady reading and math diagnostic scores.

Gaines 1st Place in Microbiology

Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies 7th grader, Yeilianis Nicol Torres won first place in the Microbiology category of the St. Lucie County STEM Fair! Her project, “Where Are the Germs” investigates where the truly dirtiest locations are in a school. She will be continuing on to the state competition in Lakeland, Florida.

ITS Personnel Recognized with STAR Award

There are so many people in St. Lucie Public Schools that go great things every day for our students, teachers, staff and community. At the June 10th School Board Meeting, three individuals from our Information Technology Services (ITS) Department were presented the STAR Award with special thanks and recognition for all the tireless weekends they put in resolving problems and ensuring that students, parents, teachers, and staff can accomplish their daily tasks. Future Leaders Unite: SPMS and PSLHS Student Councils/Governments Connect for an Afternoon of Leadership & Teamwork.  8th-grade Student Council students at Southport Middle School were introduced to the Port Saint Lucie High School Student Government.  This gave students a chance to get to know more about the program before joining in the fall. The two groups of responsible young leaders met to discuss their roles and responsibilities while planning for the future and working together in team-building activities and games. Keeping a Finger on the Pulse of Future Healthcare Careers

Over 100 Allied Health Students from SLWCHS, TCHS and FPWHS participated in the Future Healthcare Professionals Conference derived from the Healthcare Roundtable for St. Lucie and Martin Counties. Students had a chance to learn soft skills, financial aid options, task management and overall were able to acquire knowledge on their pathway to becoming a healthcare provider. Students were exposed to vendors from various healthcare industries such as Treasure Coast Hospice, Martin Memorial, Midway Specialty Care, and ABC Medical. Future Educator Off To Great Start

Arielle Fountain represented Fort Pierce Westwood in Gainesville at the FFA Agriculture Education Career Development Event (CDE) and placed in the top six to advance to the State contest in June! Arielle developed a lesson plan, taught UF professors, and took a written test on the standards she was assigned to teach! She plans to major in Ag Ed at the University of Florida, and is off to a great start!

Oak Hammock K-8 recently celebrated Future Destination Day, and it was an unforgettable experience for our students in Grades 3–8! This inspiring event gave students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of careers and professions in a fun, interactive way. Our incredible guest speakers shared their personal journeys—how they chose their careers, the education and experiences that shaped them, and what their day-to-day work looks like. Furs, Fins, Feathers, and Friends for Mariposa Odyssey Team

Mariposa Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team led by Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni competed in the Palms Regional tournament in Riviera Beach, Florida.  They competed in Division 1 for problem number 5 titled “Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends.” They were one out of eight teams that decided to solve this problem. Furniture that Passes the Test at SLWK8

Mrs. Boham’s STEAM class designed and built a piece of furniture that would hold 2-5 lbs. Middle school STEAM students in Mrs. Boham‘s class learned about cardboard, its history, and recycling it to build a piece of furniture that would hold a 2-5 lb. weight.  Researching the concept of cardboard furniture, asking questions like who the demographic would be for this product and what are the multiple uses this furniture could provide?
