Mrs. Boham’s STEAM class designed and built a piece of furniture that would hold 2-5 lbs. Middle school STEAM students in Mrs. Boham‘s class learned about cardboard, its history, and recycling it to build a piece of furniture that would hold a 2-5 lb. weight. Researching the concept of cardboard furniture, asking questions like who the demographic would be for this product and what are the multiple uses this furniture could provide? Students examined assembly and attachment techniques as well as the strengths and weaknesses of their materials. Using the design process, students collaborated to share their individual concepts, and then they cooperated to combine winning features to design their group prototype. After they drafted a final design, they deconstructed it into the parts they would need to construct to assemble it. Assigning the parts and jobs, they made a plan to build the furniture together, test with weights, and then present their results to the class. Some were not content with holding 5 lbs. and were curious to test the limits of their design. They used 7 lb. books to discover their table could hold 63 lbs. Students were creative with furniture ideas such as constructing tables, gamer chairs, beds, and a nightstand with a working drawer!
