Support is Blooming for New Teachers

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – A recent professional development campaign tagged as “The Marigold Effect – Seeds of Change” was designed to foster literacy support and mentorship for new teachers.  According to Mandy Rowland, literacy curriculum specialist for St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS), this particular training was designed to foster the positive support offered by the District’s literacy coaches.  “The marigold symbolizes positive, strong, cheerful, and protective qualities; likewise, our veteran educators encourage, support and nurture teachers so they will positively thrive,” said Rowland.   The focus on support is not uncommon as the attention of the District’s human resource team … Read More

Literacy Week at SRE

      Parents, St. Lucie Sheriff’s officers, business leaders, and SLPS School Board members visited Savanna Ridge Elementary and read with students. Our students and Principal, Mrs. D’Jion Jackson-Harris, had a great time designing their “vocabulary hat” to encourage literacy and to use hands on creativity to learn new words. A few of our students with Mrs. Jackson-Harris “Taking Hats Off to Vocabulary” to enhance literacy skills.   Our dedicated teachers decorated their classroom doors to represent their class’s favorite book.

SGA Welcomes Dan Frank

Samuel Gaines Academy had the honor of having Mr. Dan Frank, executive director of schools for SLPS, as a guest speaker for the Speakers’ Bureau. Eighth graders had the opportunity to hear Mr. Frank’s story and his life’s struggles before he became an educator. All in an effort to help students understand the importance of an education, hard work, and effort. He was accompanied by Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS board member, and Pastor Kenny Mills Sr.

On Tuesday January 31st, Lincoln Park Academy’s Caleb Pottorff was notified that he had be named “Gatorade Player of the Year for Cross Country.”   Caleb also won the “Mr. Cross Country” award from the Florida Dairy Farmers. Congratulations to Caleb on his recent awards.

Jazz Bands from Palm Pointe Perform

On February 1st the Jazz Program from Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition sent two middle school jazz bands to the District 13 Florida Bandmasters Association Jazz Music Performance Assessment. As the only groups from St. Lucie County, they were proud to participate and represented our county with pride. Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.  Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Celebrate Literacy Week

Bayshore Elementary School students participated in many events during Celebrate Literacy Week.  Students had the opportunity to learn about folktales and then watch them come to life with the actors from Riverside Theatre.  Students also celebrated their favorite books by dressing up as their favorite characters and vocabulary words and then participating in a school-wide parade.  Pictured are some students from Ms. Budhram’s VPK class sharing their favorite books.

Bayshore’s Annual Literacy Night

Bayshore Elementary hosted its annual Literacy Night during Celebrate Literacy Week.  Students and families had a great time learning about literacy while participating in literacy games and activities.  Second grade student, Tyler Jennings, and his mom, Karen Jennings, worked together to set a literacy goal for Tyler while learning about additional resources at the event.

Academic Challenge Champions Announced
