ST. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) continues to open additional pathways to college success for more and more high school students. On March 1, 2017, the District will launch its first SAT School Day, affording all juniors the opportunity to participate in SAT testing during the regular school day. “We are always looking for ways to support our students. Historically, students are challenged to schedule time for the SAT on a weekend. The SAT School Day removes barriers such as weekend transportation issues to SAT test sites, conflicts with work, or other family obligations. It’s a win-win for our students,” said Superintendent E. Wayne Gent.
Another major hurdle the SAT School Day helps students overcome is the issue of funding. SLPS secured a grant from the College Board to cover the $57.00 per student registration fee. With approximately 3,200 juniors participating in the SAT, a value of $180,000.00 will be appreciated. “That’s not all,” said Lynda Octavi, secondary programs specialist. “Students taking the SAT during the regular school day also benefit by taking the test in a familiar location free from the anxiety of registration and check-in.” She also explained that students have access to SAT prep tools as well as school-based tutorials prior to testing.
SAT scores are important for many applications to colleges and universities as well as scholarship opportunities. Providing all students with access to the SAT helps grant greater equity and flexibility for students in their college and career choices.
