On February 26, two teams competed in the Regional Tournament at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach and both teams are headed to the Florida State Tournament on the campus of the University of Central Florida on April 8. Ms. Mellion’s class created Leprechaun Traps for STEAM challenge. They used their critical thinking skills to figure out the best way to catch a leprechaun. The class voted for their top three favorites and they received a prize. All students received Gator Bucks (PBIS) for participation. Can’t wait to see how many leprechauns are caught over break!  

Grace Packs is an organization serving St. Lucie County that provides weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply. Currently, Grace Packs provides service to 20 schools in St. Lucie County, thus relieving the burden many children endure by being hungry. Mariposa Elementary’s Award Winning Odyssey of the Mind Team A team of seven creative minds from Mariposa Elementary came together to save creativity through problem solving. Mariposa’s Odyssey of the Mind team went to a regional competition in Riviera Beach, where they won 2nd place! Northport students became researchers and scientists in their classrooms. Hobe Sound Nature Preserve brought live owls to enhance the science lessons learned in school. Students learned about heredity and the difference between owls and red tailed hawks. They learned what owls eat as well as their natural habitats, and they also learned that owls can’t digest foods so they form pellets similar to hairballs. The pellets are filled with bones from their prey. Students were able to dissect sterilized pellets and match bone pieces to figures on a chart. A big thumbs up to this terrific hands-on lesson. With the support of Special Olympics Coordinators from local high schools, St. Lucie Public Schools hosted its first Unified Track and Field Meet on Wednesday, March 8th at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce. The Meet started out as a practice run, but it soon turned into a full-fledged event that engaged all participants in a spirited day.  The excitement of the track and field events was infectious and everyone left with smiles on their faces.  

On Friday, February 3, 2017, 26 select 8th grade students from Lincoln Park Academy toured several programs at Indian River State College during Middle School Great Explorations.  These students spent the day gaining valuable hands-on experience in the robotics, photonics, medical services, and computer animation/digital media fields.  The purpose of the trip centered on the connection between secondary education and the world of work, cementing the learning which took place during the 8th grade Naviance activities completed throughout the school year.  Feedback from the students was very encouraging and we can’t wait for next year’s trip!      

Please join St. Lucie Public Schools in supporting the St. Lucie Fire Department as it  hosts a family fun event on April 8th for Autism Awareness.  This family fun day centered around a charity flag football game will also host many vendors and provide fun activities for all ages. This event will be held at the Jessica Clinton Park in Port St. Lucie.

Eleven concert bands from throughout St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) participated in the District 13 Concert Band Music Performance Assessments (MPAs) this past weekend. At this assessment, the ensembles perform on Stage 3 prepared numbers for three judges.  One selection must be a march.  Students leave the stage and go into the Sight Reading room.  They are handed a booklet that resembles the booklet that students receive when taking FSAs.  They are directed to different passages in the booklet.  The director is allotted a small amount of time to give brief directions, and the bands are then expected to “sight read” … Read More

We partnered with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Saint Lucie County and Americorps to bring the very best learning experience to our VPK-grade through three students. St. Lucie Public Schools congratulates David Hall who represented Fort Pierce Westwood and the District in the State Wrestling Tournament this weekend. David upset a number one seed in the first round in an unbelievable match; he then went on to win 6th place in the State Meet!  David was the only wrestler from St. Lucie County to place at the meet. Congratulations to David, Coach Torres, Coach Bama, and the entire wrestling team for a great season and for representing Westwood with Panther Pride!

Former student, Mark Jattan, comes back to Mariposa Elementary to shadow teachers. Mark is seen here with his former fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Sarah Letsch. Mark is interested in becoming a teacher and is currently attending the University of Central Florida.  He would like to begin his career teaching at the elementary school that started it all for him. He has a great deal of fond memories from Mariposa and would like to continue that tradition for the upcoming generation of Mariposians.
