Mrs. Miranda Spells’ primary students recently embarked on an exciting literary adventure with the book “Going to the Beach,” diving into the story like true literacy detectives! After reading, students enthusiastically engaged in a creative activity where they illustrated and labeled their own beach scenes. Fourth graders from Mrs. Gleason’s class worked collaboratively as they located and labeled the physical features of Florida. They identified cities, attractions, and bodies of water. They also interpreted political and physical map elements by using a map key and compass rose. GO LEOPARDS!

Lawnwood Leopards Are Learning About Influential Hispanic Leaders

Mrs. Collins’s fifth-grade students are learning about Hispanic Leaders.  Recently, they completed a class project about Jeanette Nunez, Florida’s first Hispanic female Lieutenant Governor. Students learned about Nunez’s career and the contributions that she has made to help all Floridians.  Lawnwood students are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!  GO LEOPARDS!

Lawnwood Leopards are learning about growth mindset.  K-5 students attended the NED Show which focuses on character education.  The NED acronym stands for Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best.  Here at Lawnwood Elementary School we will use the NED approach as we continue to promote a culture of kindness and excellence throughout our campus.  GO LEOPARDS!

School Counselor Lilias Batchelor has organized an Afterschool Boys Club for boys in Grades 3-5 at Lawnwood Elementary School. Mr. Singletary of Roundtable SLC and Mr. Mack have partnered with Lawnwood Elementary School to support this project. Our students eagerly anticipate this weekly program, which provides them with opportunities to collaborate, solve problems, and create solutions. Various community members are invited to share information with the boys, offering valuable insights and experiences. Lawnwood Leopards are Extending Their Learning

Mrs. Collins’ 4th-grade class at Lawnwood Elementary recently completed a timeline and test questions project. After studying nonfiction texts with timelines, they explored another text without a timeline. Students constructed a timeline solely from the information provided in the text.  Then, they created three test questions and answers to deepen their learning.  It was an enjoyable learning experience.  GO LEOPARDS!

Lawnwood Leopards Are Deepening Their Understanding of Physical Science

Ms. Bosque’s fifth-grade students are comparing and contrasting the basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases, such as mass, volume, color, texture, and temperature.  They measured and compared objects and materials based on their physical properties including mass, shape, volume, color, hardness, texture, odor, taste, and attraction to magnets.  The students enjoyed working together and recording their research in the lab journals.  Also, during this physical science experiment, the students learned about changes in matter.  By the end of the activity, the students were able to describe the physical changes water undergoes as it is heated and/or cooled. .  

Lawnwood Leopards are Creative

Students in Miss Voss’ 5th-grade class created Technology Applications. They were instructed to include: the product title, a description of the App’s purpose, the price, and any unique features. The students presented their project to Administration and students were recognized for their work. Some of the Apps created were: A Feel Better App, Animation Apps, Go Sitter, a Hobby App, and a Sketch App. The project inspired their imaginations and was extremely engaging.

Lawnwood Leopards are celebrating Black History Month while creating lifelong memories through community engagement. Mrs. Collins’ fourth-grade students are always eager to learn about community leaders.  In honor of Black History Month, Mrs. Collins invited Fort Pierce City Commissioner Curtis Johnson Jr. to visit her class. This provided students with a unique opportunity to practice their communication skills by interviewing him. Now, they are transforming these insights into PowerPoint presentations, enhancing their public speaking and technical abilities. Lawnwood Leopards are Celebrating Black History Month

During the month of February, students in grades K-5 learned about the contributions of various African Americans.  During this schoolwide celebration, classroom teachers guided students as they worked collaboratively to research influential African Americans like Denzel Washington, Mae Jemison, Simone Biles, Madame CJ Walker, Toni Morrison, Rosa Parks, and Dr. Martin Luther King.  They gathered information from websites and articles.  Students also created drawings, charts, and artwork to enhance their class project display board.  During the Black History Family Night, students dressed as their assigned historical figure and shared important facts about their person.
