Third Grader’s from Mrs. Warren’s class at Lawnwood Elementary read an article about Hawksbill Turtles becoming extinct. They worked together to raise money to adopt 300 baby turtles. They exceeded their goal and were able to adopt 500 turtles. These Lawnwood Leopards are contributing to our world. WAY TO GO!

In honor of national parent involvement month, a parent conference night was held at Lawnwood Elementary School. Teachers, students, and parents met to analyze progress monitoring data, review academic goals, and discuss strategies for improvement. Parents also learned how to use Skyward to track their students’ academic growth, attendance, and behavior. It was another awesome parent involvement event. GO LEOPARDS!

The Lawnwood Leadership Team hosted a PM3 Parent Night where parents learned about Florida’s statewide standardized assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, which align with the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST), covering VPK through grade 10 ELA Reading and VPK through grade 8 Mathematics assessments, is administered three times per year as a progress monitoring assessment. Parents of K-5 students were warmly invited to meet with their child’s teacher, creating an invaluable opportunity to discuss progress monitoring and i-Ready reading and math scores. Lawnwood’s Girls on the Run Team recently participated in the Annual 5K Celebration. Girls on the Run is a program designed to empower girls, meeting twice a week to boost self-confidence, enhance teamwork skills, and focus on emotional and physical well-being for girls in grades 3-5. Each season concludes with a joyful and fun non-competitive 5K Celebration, offering participants a tangible sense of accomplishment and the confidence to author their own stories. Lawnwood Elementary School teachers Ashlay Parker and Theresa Brandifino received a grant from the St. Lucie Education Foundation for funds to create a Saturday Academy at Lawnwood Elementary. The goal of the Academy is to help targeted students improve their scores on the FCAT by providing an increase in time focusing on skills. Over a six-week, half-day Saturday program, third, fourth, and fifth graders will receive intense reading and math instruction. Lawnwood Elementary School fifth grade teacher James Johnson has challenged his colleagues to match or beat the amount of food his students have collected for the upcoming holiday season. Johnson boasted that his is such a caring class this year, he is excited to see how enthused they are to help others during the holiday season. Students in Shannon Dolan’s multi-age gifted class at Lawnwood Elementary are studying the life cycle of a butterfly by catching specimens. Pictured is second grader John Donnelly as he explains to the class how he captured both a caterpillar and a butterfly in his own yard. The students then watched how he fed his new family member with a stick of sugar water. First grade teacher Carolyn Bates’s classroom has butterflies that freely fly while the children do their lessons. One child exclaimed, “It’s like a butterfly garden, only inside!”
The second grade students of Lawnwood Elementary are enhancing their comprehension, vocabulary, and listening skills by participating in daily read aloud instruction.
Students in Karen Crosby’s VPK class at Lawnwood Elementary recently rode The Polar Express. The class donned their pajamas, and with their golden tickets in hand, boarded the Polar Express for an imaginary trip to the North Pole. In the darkened room, the children listened to The Polar Express read aloud and reenacted the events from singing carols to drinking hot chocolate. Pictured are students ready for their adventure!
Lawnwood Elementary students who met their reading goal were recently treated to a special spring activity and Easter egg hunt. The third graders from Lela Studivan’s class at Lawnwood Elementary School have finished their unit on recycling, and as a capstone project, they are making compost from last year’s garden. This compost consisted of rocks, egg shells, apple and orange peels, which the students mixed and prepared for the 2013-14 growing season. They are ready to plant this year’s crop of vegetables and flowers and are eager to harvest this year’s bounty. Pictured is Ms. Studivan with students working with their garden.
Ms. Jacob’s 5th-grade students worked cooperatively as they determined which cup of water (foam, metal, paper, or plastic) would most likely have the slowest temperature change. Lawnwood Leopards are leading the way!
Lawnwood Elementary students are practicing “Metric Math Activities” by walking the campus and measuring everything in sight. This measuring exercise will culminate with a play starring several K-2nd grade students as the planets who compare and contrast their celestial bodies’ distance from the sun and the Earth.
