In support of St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) continuing effort to recruit and retain experienced teachers, SLPS and the St. Lucie Classroom Teachers’ Association/Classified Unit have agreed to remove contract language that limits the years of experience awarded to returning DROP retirees. Previously, returning DROP retirees had a cap of five years on the experience for which they could receive credit. Anthony Knighton, a graduate of Fort Pierce Central High School is currently attending Southern Illinois University (SIU) where he was named as a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award.  Weighing in at 246 and clearing six feet by two inches, this defensive end from Fort Pierce, Florida set SIU freshman records and led all MVFC freshmen in sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (11.0) this season. Martin Luther King, Jr. Grand Parade

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion showed their pride at the annual Martin Luther King, Junior Day Parade in Fort Pierce.  Marching in this parade is a tremendous honor and privilege for Port St. Lucie High. The Battalion formation led by the Jaguar’s Color Guard was commanded by Cadet Captain Morgan Emerson carrying the National Flag. Cadet Major Tesa May carried the State Flag. Graduation Rates released by the Florida DOE show a historic and unprecedented measure of success for St. Lucie Public Schools. The District is ranked fifth overall in Florida and is the highest ranking district on the Treasure Coast with an overall graduation rate of 90.1 percent. Professional Educators and Continuing Education

St. Lucie Public Schools obtained a Math/Science Partnership (MSP) grant focused on increasing science content knowledge. This grant provided twenty-five teachers with the opportunity to participate in the U-Futures program. Nine of these teachers continued, and through the grant along with the generosity of the University of Florida, they completed their Master of Arts in Education (MAE) in Science Education free of charge. Northport Students Work Diligently on Noteworthy Project Citizen!

Northport seventh graders are working diligently on their very meaningful Project Citizen collaborations.  Students are following the criteria for the projects by identifying a problem, gathering information, examining alternative policies, proposing and developing their own public policy and then developing an action plan.  Northstar instructor  Thomas McDonald and Elizabeth Montilla, the critical thinking  teacher, are collaborating to make sure that efficacy is evident in the very important projects. Robert Golden Honored

Robert Golden has been heralded by many as a hero, a courageous individual, a compassionate humanitarian; he is a senior at Port St. Lucie High School who was on his way home from school one afternoon in December when he witnessed an injured motorcyclist.  Realizing the situation was dire, Robert stepped forward into the midst of onlookers, asked for a belt to create a tourniquet to help stop the bleeding until first responders could arrive on scene.
