We are excited to host the St. Lucie Public Schools College Fair on Thursday, September 21st, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Havert L. Fenn Center. St. Lucie Public School students in grades 9 through 12 are welcome to attend and will have the opportunity to meet with over 80 organizations ranging from armed services to technical schools, colleges, and universities. Mark Your Calendar for the PSLHS Drive Event

On Saturday April 21, test drive a new Buick and help Port St. Lucie High School (PSLHS) located at 1201 SE Jaguar Lane in Port St. Lucie receive up to $10,000. Garber Buick GMC in Ft. Pierce will have new Buick vehicles at the school for this Test Drive Event from 8:00am-3:00pm.  For each 2-3 minute Test Drive, Buick will donate $10.00.  When the event exceeds 100 test drives, Buick will double the donation to $20.00.  The goal is to reach the maximum donation of $10,000 for the day! Mariposa’s VPK Students Practice Positive Relationships with Peers

Mariposa Elementary VPK students are practicing discussing options, how to problem solve, how to use trial and error, and most importantly, how to be cooperative. Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s VPK students defined the words, provided examples, saw a video, and listened to a Sesame Street song. They cut 5 pieces out of each rectangle to make it look like a puzzle. Then they had to draw, color, and decorate their pieces. Mariposa’s Second Graders Study Antarctica

At Mariposa Elementary, Ms. Humphrey‘s second grade class recently created informational books on Antarctica and Emperor Penguins. The students created 3-dimensional penguins with baby chicks and a penguin rookery. Mariposa’s Second Graders Investigates Matter

At Mariposa Elementary, second grade students conducted science investigations in groups to classify the different kinds of materials by their physical properties by making root beer floats. Students observed and explained how the three states of matter went through a chemical change. When the (liquid) root beer was poured on the (solid) ice cream, it foamed up into a (gas) or bubbles. Mariposa’s Reading Under the Stars Night

Mariposa science night was a stellar success, as guests explored the wonders of the night sky and read books with flashlights. Attendees had the chance to look through telescopes, including the Dobsonian telescope, a design influenced by Isaac Newton’s early work. With these powerful lenses, they observed Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and the moon in stunning detail. Principal Brooke Wigginton also joined the excitement, using her phone and the Skyview Nite app to view celestial sites. Mariposa’s PBIS Celebrates with Jersey Day

Go Team, Go!!! There was a lot to cheer about during Mariposa’s PBIS Wear Your Favorite Sport Shirt or Jersey Day. It was a grand slam! For 10 Butterfly Bucks, students could wear their favorite sports team shirt or jersey to school. There was no fumbling with that as many excited students wore their shirts proudly. Mariposa’s Odyssey

Mariposa Elementary’s Award Winning Odyssey of the Mind Team A team of seven creative minds from Mariposa Elementary came together to save creativity through problem solving. Mariposa’s Odyssey of the Mind team went to a regional competition in Riviera Beach, where they won 2nd place! The team members that participated were 5th graders Janellie Alvarez, Sydnee Rubenstein, James Philips, and Samantha Gardner; 4th graders Justin Horton and Mason Mumford; 3rd grader Taylor Wildes. Mariposa’s Kindergartners Honor Their Grandparents

Kindergarten students honored their grandparents at Mariposa Elementary. They enjoyed their time by reading and drawing together. The grandparents and their child completed a book together and shared stories. Afterwards, the children and their grandparents enjoyed lunch together. Mariposa Elementary fifth grade students are exploring scientists

Mariposa’s Fifth Grade N.E.E.D. Students Visit the Capital

Mariposa Elementary’s 5th grade Monarchs received a well-deserved recognition for their participation in the NEED Project. This project encourages and rewards student leadership and innovation by sponsoring a Youth Awards Program for Energy Achievement.  Students in the NEED program, led by Mrs. Carla Bargeron, were awarded the Florida Elementary runner up for their excellent job educating younger students in energy conservation. Mariposa Teachers Recognized for Their Work with Grace Packs

Michelle Smith and Jenifer Scipioni were recently recognized by PNC Bank for their dedication and service to the students at Mariposa. Mrs. Smith initiated involvement with Grace Packs a few years ago and has been instrumental in continued support of this outstanding program. Grace Packs is designed to help students who are in need of food support. Every Friday, food items are sent home with identified children to augment the food available to them at home. Mariposa Students Visit The Busch Wildlife Care Center

Mariposa Elementary first grade students enjoyed a beautiful day at The Busch Wildlife Care Center in Jupiter, FL. Each class enjoyed a tour led by one of the talented educators on staff at the Care Center. The students learned about Florida animals and their environment. Most importantly, they learned the importance of preserving animal habitats and how to care for the animals. While on the tour, students saw an alligator and a crocodile, four species of owls, hawks, a bald eagle, a deer, raccoons, vultures, cranes, turkeys, and many more interesting animals. Mariposa second graders get up close to animals

As part of the second grade science unit on animals, students at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed a visit from the WildLife Teaching Team from the Hobe Sound Nature Center, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting an environmental awareness in people of all ages. The center offers a variety of environmental education presentations to schools and organizations. The students enjoy the opportunity to see live animals up close. They viewed an osprey, and an owl, and were allowed to pet a baby alligator, a baby crocodile, and an albino snake. Pictured, from left, are Kindman Inniccherri, Esmeralda Cruz, and Jessica Simko.

Mariposa Monarchs Buddy Read Their First SSYRA Book

First Graders at Mariposa Elementary are enjoying the 2019-2020 Sunshine State Young Reader Award Junior books. Mia Romero and Isabella Cruz are buddy reading their first SSYRA book. They are best friends and are looking forward to reading all 15 of the books this year.

Mariposa Monarch Reads to Younger Students

Mrs. Baptiste’s third grade student, Jayden Fairchild, put her amazing reading skills to work as she read a favorite classic story to Mrs. Auciello’s first graders! The class was silent and fully engaged as they listened to her read to them.  

Mariposa Kindergarteners visit the 4-H Farm

All the Kindergarten students at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed a hands-on experience at the 4-H Farm. This field trip enhanced their classroom lessons on animals and learning about gardens as they were able to touch the fur of a donkey, pony, horse, calf, goat, sheep and even a pig. Jabari Monds, Jake Legentus, Anthony Sarver, and Lumarion Gardenhire wait in anticipation of getting to feel the hair of the donkey. They looked at the similarities and differences of the animals to compare and contrast and had fun learning about what our farm friends do for us!

Mariposa Gets Creative with Math in Kindergarten

The students in Mrs. Auciello’s Kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary started the year with a fun activity to practice counting objects accurately with one to one correspondence up to 10. Pictured is Jessie Hindman who very accurately used his play-dough to make the number 8 and to count out 8 play-dough circles to match. The students are off to a great start this year!
