Monarch Musicians from Mariposa Elementary made their grand debut at the winter concert. This officially broke a two-year hiatus of students performing on stage. Students and parents alike were overjoyed to hear three different performing ensembles. The three ensembles were tubano drumming, chorus, and Orff xylophone band. The selected fourth and fifth grade students dedicated after-school time to participate in preparing music for their ensemble. At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s VPK was very fortunate to visit CAST (Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie) to watch their rendition of  “The Rainbow Fish”. The VPK students also enjoyed dancing on the stage. What a fantastic presentation and a fun day for all!

After discussing mysterious movers all week, and learning that wind, water, and planets are mysterious movers; the students in Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s Mariposa VPK classroom learned about the solar system and how the planets are constantly moving. They learned the correct term to describe that movement — orbit. They then discussed which planets were closer to the sun, and they all held a planet, moon, or star and began to orbit. The use of technology, images, and songs were implemented as well. Students pictured: Brayden Myers, Arianna Jesse, Madilynn Bonocchi, and Shantel Perch.  

Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s VPK students discussed things that move, including transportation. The students identified what modes of transportation move on land. They were able to help list a couple of examples: cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, etc. The students were able to determine the similarity between each mode of transportation because they all had wheels. Next, the class listened and watched a BrainPOP Jr. snippet about transportation. They then moved into their daily centers. At Mariposa Elementary,  Mrs. Bonilla’s VPK is working on learning about patterns. They have already learned about AB patterns and now they have moved to working on ABB patterns. Arianna Lopez, Charles Sloan, Hunter Schultz, Annahisha Charles, and Cristian Gomez were provided with visuals and hands on examples. Then they were given counting squares so that they could work on making an ABB pattern individually.  

Mariposa Elementary has been extremely fortunate to have Ms. Marjorie Ovsiovitch as our Americorps volunteer this year. Ms. Ovsiovitch has helped numerous children close their learning gaps while enjoying time with her. She is kind, dedicated, and loyal to our Monarchs. The students’ eyes light up when it is their special time to read with Ms. O. She truly is a treasure here at our school. Pictured are first grader, Isabella Perez, and Ms. Ovsiovitch.

Mariposa Elementary Student Council, led by Mrs. Alice Gale-Wharton, passed on the usual bi-monthly meeting to kick-off the season with a luncheon and craft project.  Dipping pinecones into peanut butter and birdseed, everyone enjoyed creating an environmentally safe gift to keep or give and share with our feathered Florida wildlife. In the classrooms, students read their stories to each other, and enjoyed some treats. Mrs. Whitaker and Ms. Patton along with the admin team dressed up as their favorite story book character from the story Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Mariposa participated in a school-wide STEM activity prepared by our Science Committee. The goal was to “Save Fred” with a partner using only four paper clips. The students could not touch Fred, the boat, or the life preserver directly with their hands! If they did, they needed to start from the beginning. This encouraged the students to collaborate, test, retest, and reflect. The students needed to describe, prepare a flow chart, and answer post questions to explain how they saved Fred. Mariposa Elementary families participated in a Publix Math Night.  Our amazing Math coach, Mrs. Ashle Henderson, organized the event with our partners at Publix at the Towne Center Shops. Approximately 60 families participated in this evening of fun. The parents and students really enjoyed the activities and put their math skills to the test. We appreciate Publix Supermarket at the Town Center Shops and are so glad to have such a wonderful business partner. They provided cookies and gift bags to all the students. In Mrs. C. Bonilla’s PreKindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary, the students discussed many different kinds of paper. This included where paper comes from and what different things we can create with it. The students practiced writing, drawing, cutting, and gluing the paper. Madison Barr wrote, ” Paper comes from trees.” She drew trees to illustrate her sentence. She practiced copying, starting with a capital letter, and left appropriate spaces between the words. At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Bonilla’s students continue to work on sounding out words and identifying the individual letters of a Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) word. This week they discussed things they can build, and one of the items mentioned was being able to build words! Students were given alphabet blocks and instructed to build certain words by sounding out, after finding their CVC word, they wrote the following sentence “I can build words.”  Next, they wrote their word and drew a picture. Mariposa Elementary celebrated its PBIS by having a Pokemon Day. Students paid 20 Butterfly Bucks to participate in Pokemon Day where they created a unique Pokemon with special powers and a Poke-Ball and then played charades as they became a Pokemon. Maurice Johnson and Tristan Coe are working hard to create their Pokemon. Jha’keriah Galloway, Brianna Granja, and Beverly Garay are discussing their Pokemon with each other. Mariposa Elementary students enjoyed having story time in the media center amongst themselves while using the app Novel Effect. The app follows along with interactive music and sound effects which makes for an extraordinary read aloud. Mason De La Haye Hendrix is seen here reading his favorite book, The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat to his three friends David Sagre, June Collins, and Yalena Pastes . Mason’s friends enjoyed the magical moments listening to their friend read to them.

At Mariposa Elementary, students in second grade got a chance to try out their observation skills by taking a trip to the school garden. Students used tools such as rulers and measuring tapes to measure the new sprouts. Then, they recorded their observations in their science journals. Great job Monarchs!!    

A Texas Roadhouse sponsored lunch with Mariposa Elementary’s Deputy Miller! This is one of ten incentives students could receive for doing their best on the FSA! Others included Principal for the Day, Asst. Principal for the Day, lunches with other leadership team members, and taping the Principal to the wall!

At Mariposa Elementary, Ms. K. Swanson’s 1st grade homeroom is on a pen pal escapade writing and illustrating creative masterpieces with Mrs. Whitfield’s 1st grade class located in Lytle, Texas.  The writing adventure began in early October and will continue until the end of May.   The students are grouped into pairs and enjoy the process of sharing fun information, asking questions that necessitate a direct response and learning fun facts about the state of Texas.  The class is looking forward to “meeting” their pen pals live through skype in the weeks to come. At Mariposa, Mrs. Elizabeth Forbes, first grade teacher, volunteered to serve as the Unicef Coordinator.  She turned this into a learning experience for her students.  She had enough coins to allow her first graders to sort, count, make patterns, and even count by 5’s and 10’s.  What an opportunity!  So now these first graders know their coins!
