Northport Deans Support Eighth Annual UNITY DAY!

Northport Deans, Billy Hicks and Georgia Stone, along with Clerk Kachina Hall, are doing a superior job of taking care of security at Northport. Northport Deans Promote “Step Up America!”

Northport Deans Georgia Stone and Billy Hicks recently stepped into Susan Matteson’s eighth grade class and presented a solid lesson pertaining to personal security. The lesson was a group project where students were given information from the American Security Council Foundation website about personal security and the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Each group was given an article to read. Students then created a word cloud about the main idea of their topic and the important words about each topic. Northport culinary team showcases student achievement

Northport K-8 School participated in the St. Lucie County Public Schools Culinary Showcase held recently at the St. Lucie Civic Center in Port St. Lucie. Northport students, Principal Glenn Rustay and the entire school community are extremely proud of Rachel Ellsworth and her culinary team. The Northport team was one of only two middle grades schools that attended the event, and students and instructor were well deserving to showcase their finest cooking samples at the culinary event along with top high school teams. Northport Culinary Students Make Treats

Culinary Arts students at Northport K-8 are following kitchen safety protocols by creating rice crispy treats.  Some chose to drizzle melted chocolate or add mini M&Ms while others formed shapes such as hearts and snowmen.  The delicious treats were sold at the Northport K-8 Winter Band Concert!

Northport culinary students hold cupcake war

Middle grades Northport K-8 students in the culinary arts program, under the direction of Caren Boyd,  participated in a cupcake war recently.  Students worked in cooperative teams and devised plans and recipes to produce the best cupcake.  Students in six groups used   Oreos, confetti, gum drops, Hershey kisses, marshmallows, caramel, cherries, peaches, strawberries and different types of icing to concoct the best cupcake.  Judges used a rubric which included taste, appearance, moistness and ingenuity.  Pictured are the winners, from left, Nailen Hernandez, Jaquinton Price, Joel Diaz and Kara Turpin.  The winning cupcake was Oreo flavored with a fudge center, vanilla … Read More

Northport culinary students enjoys interactive trip to grocery store

Northport K-8 School instructor Rachel Ellsworth, along with a group of excited students and parents, took an educational jaunt to a local grocery store to price shop and to learn about the skills need to work in different areas of the store. Students learned about the butcher shop, the floral department and the bakery, as well as sanitation practices, cross-contamination and food safety. Northport culinary department honors local first responders

Northport K-8 School Culinary Arts instructor, Rachel Ellsworth and a group of her students honored local firefighters from Port St. Lucie, Station 3 on September 11 with a tray of homeade baked goods from the Northport Culinary students. Students walked to Station 3 after school and hand delivered the goodies. Along with the firefighters are Northport students from left, Ayana Kelly, Deja Gannon, Kelsey Krieger and Melissa Hruby. Northport K-8 School students delighted in honoring community first responders and were moved to remember all the heroes who acted courageously on September 11, 2001.

Northport Culinary Caters Hispanic Heritage Night

Northport’s middle school culinary students were offered the chance to be more hands-on with family engagement.  They catered a very successful Hispanic Heritage Family Involvement Night on September 24th.  Students prepped, cooked, and served tacos, rice, and drinks while enjoying the rhythms of the night and cultural flair. They even topped it off with their homemade fresh pico de gallo! Families enjoyed the food, dancing, cultural art displays, and the time with friends and family. Northport Culinary Arts Program off to an Exciting Start!

Northport Culinary students have been studying Food Safety. Virtual student, Eric Hoffman-Harris showed his excitement for Culinary Arts with a graphic kitchen safety poster. He went above and beyond on the assignment including pictures of himself in the kitchen. Eric even had his dad drop off the poster so Ms. Savela can hang it in the culinary classroom.

Northport Continues Annual September 11 Commemoration

Each year at Northport, our school prepares and presents a huge and unified presentation to commemorate September 11, 2001. This year, unfortunately, due to social distancing and mask wearing, our program will not be the same meeting in the media center that we have done every year. We will never forget how important it is to teach the children though. Our lessons will continue. The Northport media center is dedicated to the eight children who lost their lives on 9/11. Northport Constitution Week Study Gives Power to the People!

Constitution Week is officially declared this year as September 17-23, 2018, and schools all across America will celebrate the nation’s Constitution. Northport is proud to educate our students about our Constitution. Each morning this week, a different student voice will recite the Preamble to the Constitution on the public announcements. Community partners and neighbors, Debra Magrann and Pauline Pavlick, visited the Northport Media Center to educate our students about the Constitution. Every morning and at every school event, Northport K-8 students and teachers recite their “Kids at Hope” pledge. The meaning of the pledge is permeating the very fabric of the school in many ways. An example of student connection to the meaning of “Kids at Hope” can be found in Ann Barbare’s middle grades Intensive math class. Northport Community Unites in Writing Endeavor

Northport K-8 students, teachers and parents united recently to complete the Young Author’s program. The Author’s program is a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have learned the writing process effectively. The entire school completes the book as a community program using common language in a commitment to engaged learning. Students learn to flesh out their characters and setting with concrete vocabulary words and phrases. Students prewrite, reflect, edit, illustrate and then revise their books for publication and presentation. Northport Community Unites Against Bullying at 4th Annual Unity Day Event

Northport K-8 School community including administration, deans, teachers, staff and parents, provide a multi-pronged approach to discouraging bullying on the campus. School staff is well trained and very well versed in quelling any issues pertaining to all types of bullying. One of the events on the campus to bring the students together to promote a singular message is the annual Unity Day Walk. Northport Community Participates in National Day of Remembrance for America’s POW/MIA.

Friday morning, September 18, following the Pledge of Allegiance and the Kids At Hope Pledge, Northport joined the Nation in remembering our POW/MIA military members and their families. Northport Community Jazzed About Annual Spelling Bee!

Northport K-8 School held their annual Spelling Bee recently in the school media center. Students from grades four through eight who won their classroom spelling bees were able to move forward and participate in the school based spelling bee. Parent attendance was plentiful and each spelling bee participant was able to bring one student guest from their class. Students moved through six rounds with Americorp Tutor Azzam Abdur-Rahman calling the words and tutors Barbara Despinos and Tessa Falatovich serving as judges. Northport Community Celebrates Learning Gains!

Northport K-8 School administrators, teachers, students and parents came together recently to celebrate learning gains made by students on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, better known as the FCAT. Northport K-8 School moved up a complete letter grade and showed tremendous growth thanks to an all out effort by the entire school. Students who excelled in selected criteria in reading, math and science and actually “Navigated” the school to success were rewarded with a celebration including, snow cones, bounce houses, slides and games.
