Northport Deans Georgia Stone and Billy Hicks recently stepped into Susan Matteson’s eighth grade class and presented a solid lesson pertaining to personal security. The lesson was a group project where students were given information from the American Security Council Foundation website about personal security and the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Each group was given an article to read. Students then created a word cloud about the main idea of their topic and the important words about each topic. Students then collaborated and shared their findings with the class about the article.
All groups were engaged and knew more about their rights as a citizen and personal security at the end of the lesson. For example, inherent right to life, being treated with respect and dignity if arrested, and freedom of religion and political choice were addressed.
The American Security Council Foundation is a Northport Community Partner and their lessons and website bring so much to the table when educating our students about civic rights and duties. Thanks to our Northport Deans for working on this very important issue in our classrooms. The teamwork is tangible.
