On March 3rd, St. Lucie West K-8 School’s Drama Department, led by teachers Shannon Case and Lindsey Harris, kicked off our first annual Sharks’ Got Talent show! Students from all grades shared their amazing talents with a packed crowd of parents, friends, and the community. NPK-8 celebrated Read Across America school-wide with the help of the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Department, the City of Port St. Lucie Police Department, the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, the Big Brother Big Sisters of Indian River County, and our partners in education, First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. Overall, the school had 31 volunteer readers who helped spread the joy of reading to our students. The SLW Centennial Navy JROTC Competition Team competed in the Area 7 Florida State Drill Championships this past weekend, March 5th, 2022 at Winter Park High School in Winter Park Florida. They competed against the best 19 Navy JROTC Units throughout the state of FL. Congratulations to the Color Guard Drill Competition Team! They placed 4th in the State and brought home a fourth-place trophy from States! The fair display team consisted of several staff members across campus who came together to build a display that focused on students and their pathways to future careers. The display included life-size student models and silhouettes that represented who they wanted to be when they grow up. At the heart of it all — the dream makers — teachers. Student artwork was also displayed along with an inspirational video that shows NPK-8 staff and students are much more than just athletics, academics, and arts!

CAST artists in Ms. Swabon’s Visual Arts class were inspired by the Australian Papunya culture and community to create their own spirit animals. Their sensational artwork was showcased at the St. Lucie County Fair and embodied the theme of, “Dream Makers -Arts, Academics, and Athletics.”    

From a quiet 60-acre farm in St. Lucie County, a future MIT graduate is designing and building the next head-turning invention. Currently a student at Fort Pierce Central High School, Robert Sansone has turned his barn into a well-designed workshop. From run-faster boots that store elastic energy to taking apart spare brushless motors from his dad’s HVAC shop, Robert is a mechanical engineer with a desire and drive to make the next inventions that astonish and captivate the globe. Seventh-grade students in Mrs. Battle’s Language Arts class debated over driverless cars and their safety. Students read an article “Are Driverless Cars a Good Idea?” and used evidence from the article to support their stance. Students had the opportunity to make their case and defend it. Students are now using this experience to write an argumentative essay on the topic.

On March 3rd and 4th, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Training Squad visited Criminal Justice classes at SLW Centennial High School as part of the unit on Careers in Criminal Justice.  Students learned about the use of drones in aiding law enforcement and students in each class got to operate the drone cameras during flight.

Over the two-day weekend of February 12th and 13th, Cadets at Treasure Coast High School participated in the Bataan Death March. The march was originally the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 60,000 – 80,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war along a 60–69-mile march. Around 5,000 to 18,000 Filipinos died and up to 500 to 650 Americans died as well. Sixth-grade students in Mr. Cruz’s Visual Arts class collaborated to make pieces of art honoring Black History. Students were assigned different parts of the faces and then came together to finish each portrait. They also created Kente cloth by weaving paper.

Oak Hammock K-8, 7th-grade students participated in the Project Citizen District Showcase. We are excited for our students in Mr. Sparacio’s Civics class for having the project “Wild About Wildlife” place in the top three projects. Students collaborated to address the concern of losing the local habitat of native animals in the surrounding community due to the alarming rate of homes and business development. Students worked together to thoroughly research the policy to address their concern, identify a solution and develop an action plan through the Project Citizen Showcase. St. Lucie County’s public transportation system, Area Regional Transit (ART), announced a Call to Artists! In partnership with the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance, Area Regional Transit invited local artists to submit images of their artwork for display on the exterior of the county buses. CAST Intermediate Visual Arts students researched and created their own designs for the contest.  

Ms. Edwards, eighth grade American History Teacher, had the honor of speaking at a recent school board meeting to present the Proclamation for African American History Month so that students, faculty, and staff in St. Lucie County can recognize and acknowledge African American History Month with various programs, activities, and ceremonies. Ms. Edwards was awarded St. Lucie County’s Outstanding First Year Teacher for the District last year.
