Parkway Elementary and their 21st Century Afterschool Program have been collaborating with Oxbow on a year-long recycling program. Students in grades 3-5 participated in Oxbow’s Watershed and Wildlife program. The students identified recycling as their school-wide stewardship project. This project culminated with all classrooms receiving a recycling bin. Congratulations LPA Chorus!  This past Monday, the LPA Choral Department participated in the Florida Vocal Association State Choral Music Performance Assessments which was held at American Heritage School in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This was the third and final segment of the Florida Vocal Association’s Music Performance Assessments. Both the Women’s Chorale and Belle Voix received Straight Superior Ratings for their stunning performances. Students at CAST have been implementing principles of the Leader in Me program by assisting around the school. They were paired with a teacher to mentor them and enhance their leadership skills.  Students help in their class by buddy reading, playing with younger students on the playground, and delivering packages from the front office. We are so proud of our CAST leaders! 

Mrs. Rivera’s second-grade students went on an egg hunt in math class! First, the students participated in an egg hunt to find “money”. The students were then able to use this money to “shop” in Mrs. Rivera’s store. Students solved one and two-step addition and subtraction word problems involving money to decide what they could buy. Mrs. Rivera’s second-graders had fun using all the skills they learned in their math unit.  

This year the Exceptional Student Education, Student Services, and Office of Teaching and Learning Departments collaborated and identified needs for students with language weaknesses. Materials were purchased through the IDEA American Recovery Funds grant to help improve language skills for students with disabilities who are identified with a Language Impairment. Each school received two kits each so that the speech-language pathologists and interventionists can work to improve the needs of students with disabilities who demonstrate a weakness in language which will, in turn, improve their listening, speaking, and reading comprehension skills. All K-5 LWN students wrote a book. Students brainstormed ideas, developed a plan, created a rough draft, and produced a book. Teachers facilitated by conducting writing conferences and by providing feedback throughout the writing process. Check out these fifth-grade students from Mrs. Aaron’s class. Mariposa Elementary 4th and 5th graders had their special Writing Days. 4th Grade had a Writing Carnival and 5th grade had a Surgery Day. Each station had students dissecting texts, writing elaborations, citing evidence, and much more! It was a great day for learning!

April is Water Conservation Month and Port St. Lucie Utilities Systems invited St. Lucie County K-12 students to participate in the 6th annual 2022 Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest. Mrs. Grasso offered the contest to her middle school Graphic Arts classes as it aligns with Graphic Design principles – combining words and images. Kindergarten learned about health and nutrition from our friends at the University of Florida’s Family Nutrition Program. We have learned about healthy habits such as washing hands and what healthy food to eat.    

Kindergarten students at CAST hunted for their sight words! Once they found their sight words, they could enjoy their treats! Student leaders helped our little friends find their sight words. Practicing out sight words helps us become ‘egg-traordinary’ readers. 

Bus riders at Parkway Elementary participate in weekly Bus Bucks shopping! Once a week, students have an opportunity to cash in their earned Bus Bucks for a treat in the treasure box. Students earn Bus Bucks by exhibiting exemplary behavior while transitioning on and off the bus, as well as riding the bus. Students are working hard at Parkway Elementary, and are earning rewards to “shop ’til they drop.”  

Southport Middle School students have numerous before and after-school clubs to choose from. The PEARLS Club, Positive Enthusiastic Awesome Regal Ladies Society, is just one club that Southport teachers have been sponsoring for our girls to take part in. The PEARLS focus is for the girls to be part of a united group and become a positive influence in our community. They meet once a week and sponsor a number of activities. Grade 3 through 8 Oak Hammock K-8 families participated in a collaboratively hosted event by Title 1 and the SLPS Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) department. The event focused on Social and Emotional Learning strategies to enhance the well-being at home during the FSA testing season. Participants learned how Oak Hammock is implementing SEL at school and rotated to different stations so students and their families could practice different strategies for use at home. Village Green Media Specialist, Janet Sievers is excited to be hosting the Mel Fisher Maritime Pop-Up Museum again this year. This year the Museum is titled Overcoming Outbreaks. The students can easily relate to the topic on Covid-19 as they have lived through it. They are learning how this is not the first outbreak in history. Through their Media Class, the other topics in the museum included Bubonic Plague, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Smallpox, Tuberculosis, and Hog Cholera.

Mariposa Elementary 5th graders performed their show of Broadway musicals with the help of their drama coaches from Port St. Lucie High School. For more than 20 years, PSLHS drama students have partnered with Mariposa students to choreograph popular Broadway songs.  The 5th graders shine as they perform the songs for other grade levels as well as their parents.

Sixth Grade students in Mrs. Proctor’s and Mrs. Albers’ classes have been learning about famous female scientists for Woman’s History Month. Rosalind Franklin was a crystallographer who studied the structures of DNA, RNA, coal, and graphite.  The students grew crystals to understand the structure of them and Ms. Franklin’s contribution as a scientist.

Parkway Elementary, in collaboration with the SEL Department and the 21st Century Afterschool Program hosted a family SEL Night. Lauren Kappler, the district’s Social and Emotional Parent Educator visited and educated parents both in person and virtually. The main goal of the night was for families to learn about the five Social-Emotional competencies and what Social-Emotional Learning looks like at Parkway.
