Mrs. Bonilla’s VPK students at Mariposa Elementary have begun their second week of insect learning. They learned about characteristics, identifying different types, what makes them special, and insect body parts. The students used an Insect Checklist to help them learn these skills. Each day the students focused on one insect and used visuals and technology to further their learning. The students also listened to insect stories during storytime. They wrote sentences that described each insect while practicing correct sentence structure. Fourth graders competed in glow games last week with hands-on math activities planned by their teachers! Everyone had a great time in preparation and review for the FSA math assessment with some FUN!

Principal Monarae Miller-Buchanan and Assistant Principal Ayesia Boria were the Masters of Ceremony for the 2022 Annual Scholarship Ceremony sponsored by the Education Foundation. The Education Foundation awarded 60 scholarships funded by 20 donors totaling $58,000. Many scholarships were funded in memory of school district-affiliated individuals, including Aaron Beauchamp, Harry Lee Williams, Kimberly Pearson, Tess & Abbey Huber, Andrew Schmeer, and Daniel Hinojosa. Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies fourth graders and eighth graders recently exchanged success stories, personal challenges, and encouragement as they discussed their grade group’s journey through 2021-2022. Students and their older peers reflected on their individual data and offered each other good advice for the future. Shine on, Colts!

The second grade students of Lawnwood Elementary are cleaning up the environment. Students participated in a campus clean-up project and properly disposed of the trash. Lawnwood Leopards are cleaning up the campus and taking care of the earth.

Village Green Environmental Studies School was proud to participate in a Fun Run to benefit St. Lucie County Public Schools and the Education Foundation on Saturday, April 30th. We had over 90 students participate in weekly practice leading up to the event with 71 registered for the event. We are proud of the students and their families that attended! A special thank you goes out to Coach Copeland and Coach Saadah for taking on this venture for our school.

Fifth graders in Ms. Broderick & Mrs. Church’s class researched what companies can do to help the environment, wrote about what they can do at home and at school, and then brainstormed what they think the Earth will look like in 30 years to celebrate Earth Day! 

Third grade students made junk-bots! They used materials they were going to recycle at home and then up-cycled them to build creative robots. They designed their plan, wrote out their steps, and named their creations! 

Once a month, each of the grade level teams at Southport Middle School selects a special service project that benefits the community as students learn about the importance of volunteerism. Most recently, the seventh grade Panthers’ service projects had students learning about the basics of gardening and they spent the day beautifying the school campus by pulling weeds and planting new shrubs. The eighth grade Gators collected items and provided backpacks for the homeless that included non-perishable foods and other necessities like blankets, clothing, and various utensils. Kindergarten, first & second grade students participated in a variety of creative Earth Day projects. All students brainstormed many ways they could take care of our Earth and make it a better place!

Since we are the Mariposa Monarchs, what better way to learn about our mascot than in person? Assistant Principal Ms. Patton was awarded a grant for our school from the Educational Foundation. This grant has helped us to buy new books about butterflies and their life cycle. We were also able to build a beautiful garden that has already attracted Monarch, Zebra Longwings, and white butterflies. Some of the Monarch butterflies laid eggs on our milkweed, and before long our plants were covered in caterpillars! Middle School Visual Arts students collaborated with the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance, St. Lucie Environmental Resources Department and Oxbow Eco-Center to create up-cycling sculptures for the St. Lucie Earth Day Festival. Students learned facts about recyclable materials and being good stewards of our natural resources and environment.  Students were provided recyclable items by the St. Lucie Environmental Resources Department and created their up-cycled sculptures by integrating objects like metal clothes hangers, plastic water and soda bottles, bottle caps, plastic beads, foam, textiles, and paper products to help create their animal forms.  Students also used stones to create different pieces of … Read More

St. Lucie West K-8 students, teachers, staff, and volunteers enjoyed a warm, breezy, spring day at the annual PTO sponsored Spring Carnival! Everyone enjoyed a variety of bounce houses, fun and competitive games, a petting zoo, train rides, a dunk tank, and delicious treats. All reveled in the camaraderie and friendships that have been built throughout the year before culminating with the end-of-the-year assessments. A BIG THANK YOU to SLWK 8’s PTO for planning such a memorable event for our Shark family.
