SOMS October Hawk Hall of Fame

  On October 26th, Southern Oaks Middle School recognized students for the monthly Hawk Hall of Fame in furtherance of a positive culture and learning environment. Students were selected by their teachers and recognized for the theme of the month; empathy. Award recipients were honored in front of their peers during lunch. It’s evident at Southern Oaks, Hawks S.O.A.R.!

SOMS Math Boot Camp

Southern Oaks Middle School Math Boot Camp was a success! We had 72 students attend on Saturday, April 29th. Our SOMS’s math experts provided our students with short and focused math workshops to help our students improve their F.A.S.T. math skills. In addition, our students enjoyed grilled hotdogs, compliments of administration, to end the day with a celebration of their efforts and success on the upcoming state assessments. Thank you to all of our SOMS math experts for supporting our students. Hawks Soar!

SOMS Host Parent Night to SOAR

  Southern Oaks Middle School hosted its first Parent Night to SOAR. Parents were able to hear about the new FAST testing, GradVenture, graduation requirements, and other pertinent information that students and parents will need to know for a successful school year.

SOMS Hispanic Heritage Celebration

Southern Oaks Middle School launched Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations by placing flags from Hispanic countries in our Hawks cafeteria. In addition, Ms. Ramirez displayed incredible projects from her World Language classes. Students chose a Hispanic country to research and created various displays to show off culture, food, celebrations, and history.

Something to Chirp About at Morningside

Have you heard the latest news chirping about our campus? Mrs. Eibl’s second-grade class has welcomed the newest student to their learning cottage—Chick 1! Mrs. Eibl’s class has been working with the 4H program to hatch chicks. The students were very excited to welcome baby chick #1 and can’t wait for the others to hatch.

Students in Mrs. Quiles & Ms. Lane’s 3rd-grade classes were excited to see a partial view of the solar eclipse. We had a special guest, our amazing Assistant Principal, Ms. Sexton. She showed us the pinhole method to safely view the solar eclipse!

Social Studies Teachers Recognized for Excellence at Annual Conference

ST. LUCIE COUNTY –  Social Studies educators from Pensacola to Key West made their way to Palm Harbor, Florida for the 60th Annual Florida Council for Social Studies Conference. Amid their peers, St. Lucie Public Schools educators were honored for teaching excellence. In an awards dinner celebration that carried the conference theme of “Honoring the Past, Preserving the Present, and Shaping the Future,” Nikki Gomez (Rivers Edge Elementary), Lauren Kappler (Westgate K-8), and Lea Ann McCaffrey (St. Lucie West Centennial High School) were recognized for their efforts and strengths in teaching that they bring to their profession and share with others.   … Read More

Social Studies Teacher of the Year Presentation

The Social Studies Teachers of the Year were recognized at the School Board Meeting on June 10, 2014. Jean Emerson, Treasure Cost High School, was recognized for the high school category. Melanie Larsen, Palm Pointe Educational Research School, was presented a plaque for the elementary school category. Belkis Madera, Oak Hammock K-8, received a plaque for the middle school category.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for the SAC Members at Oak Hammock K-8

Oak Hammock K-8 is striving to support the emotional well-being of the entire Osprey family, including the families of students. During the January monthly SAC meeting, Ms. Cassey Change, SEL Specialist, and Ms. Lauren Kappler, Parent Educator, provided an overview of what Social Emotional Learning (SEL) means and how it could be used at home to support students. Social Emotional Learning in Action at Morningside Elementary School

Students and teachers at Morningside Elementary School are actively engaging in Social Emotional Learning both live and virtually. Students are participating in Sanford Harmony lessons, Circles, and Meet Ups.  They have set Harmony Goals for their individual classrooms and are creating unique greetings and responses to emotions.  Blue Jays are creating safe, healing and relationship-centered environments and we are so proud of all their hard work as we begin this new school year!

Social Emotional Learning Through Art at Fort Pierce Central

Fort Pierce Central High School Ceramics 1 class is working on social-emotional learning while making Emoji Rattles. Mrs. Avra’s students researched, sketched, and created their own personal version of Emoji’s.  As a percussive instrument with decorative features, each rattle is as unique as our art students.  Self-expression and emotional mindfulness are experienced throughout the artistic, creative process.
