Stephanie Isaacs, 7th Grade Civics Teacher at St. Lucie West K-8 School, and Anne Powell, 7th Grade Civics Teacher at Forest Grove Middle School, were two of 25 teachers selected from throughout Florida to attend the Supreme Court of Florida’s Justice Teaching Institute March 22-26 to learn about the state courts using a case study method. Teacher participants explored the courts and the Constitution in a four-and-a-half-day program with all seven justices serving as faculty. A presentation was given by Mr. Bill Tomlinson, Executive Director for Student Services & ESE, at the school board meeting on April 28th recognizing April as Autism Awareness Month. He thanked Mr. Robert Cranmer and his staff for organizing the walk for Autism Speaks with such a great success. Mr. Matt Boyd, Treasure Coast Golf Course Superintendents Association President, was recognized at the April 14th school board meeting for donating 10 tablets valued at $3000. The tablets have been used to support student differentiated learning needs. Ms. Laure Goss, speech-language pathologist, described what the learning tool has meant for student acquisition of knowledge. Mrs. Laura Kilburn, parent of Logan Kilburn a student from St. Lucie West Centennial High School who received one of the tablet, expressed her thanks and stated how this has benefited her child. Mr. Tate Stern was presented the STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Award at the school board meeting on April 14, 2015. Mr. Stern is a plumber for St. Lucie Public School District. He was nominated by Mrs. Dianne Young, Principal at Lakewood Park Elementary School. Mrs. Young shared that Mr. Stern goes above and beyond the call of duty at their school, and that he makes sure all work is completed in a timely manner with safety for all students and staff in mind. The 21st Century After School Program at Southport Middle School recently held its first Parent Night. This was a night for the students to show the STEM projects they have been working on for the last three months. Next Generation students displayed their restaurant ideas, which they designed from the ground up. Digital Me students presented digital autobiographies. Art students displayed their work and Drama students put on a murder mystery dinner for students and their parents at the end of the night. St. Lucie Public Schools proudly recognizes our 2014-2015 Sunshine State Scholar, Mr. Anthony Oreo. Anthony is a junior at Fort Pierce Central and was selected as a top junior in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to participate in the Sunshine State Scholars Program. At the board meeting on March 10, 2015, Maryann Umile was presented the Outstanding School Volunteer Award for 2014-15 for the State of Florida Region III. Maryann Umile has volunteered over the past 15 years at Bayshore Elementary School with over 15,000 hours. Martha Underwood, District Volunteer Coordinator, announced the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award Recipients at the school board meeting on March 10, 2015. The Outstanding School Volunteer of the Year for the Youth category went to Sara Ramadan, a 12th grade student from St. Lucie West Centennial High School, who volunteers at Northport K-8 School with the band class. The total number of hours Sara has contributed is 850 hours as of now and more to come. Andrea Kochanowski, Executive Director for Fort Pierce Housing Authority, presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Dale Cassens Education Complex to be used to support the Spring Fling, the school store, and future Positive Behavior Intervention support activities.
