On Thursday, March 3rd, Fort Pierce Central High School, along with Superintendent E. Wayne Gent, hosted IRSC, to announce the IRSC Promise Program. Now every 2022 graduate of a public or public charter high school in Martin, Indian River, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties can earn an IRSC Associate Degree at no tuition cost! In partnership with Scholastic Education, SLPS is rolling out classroom libraries in all K-5 classrooms across the district. Each classroom library has a collection of over 250 books to engage students in fiction and non-fiction literature. For two new teachers at Windmill Point Elementary, Scholastic Education launched the Classroom Library Makeover Contest by making over these teachers’ classroom libraries. Each teacher is eligible to enter the makeover contest for a chance to win an additional 150 books for their classroom library and to gift 150 books to another teacher on their campus. Physicians and Medical Residents from St. Lucie Medical Center hosted a virtual Diversity Equity and Inclusion forum for St. Lucie Public School (SLPS) Health Science students. Students heard directly from our local experts on what it takes to be a physician and the suggested steps current high school students may take to achieve their goals! Thank you to Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, Dr. Tim McNamara, and Dr. Kara Mann for putting this session together for over 90 SLPS Health Science students.

Congratulations to the SLPS Schools of Excellence! The State Board of Education designates a school as a School of Excellence if the school’s percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the 80th percentile or higher for at least two of the last three school years. This program was created by the 2017 Florida Legislature.
The Economic Development Council (EDC) hosted a live virtual tour for counselors, educators, school and district administration. The focus for the session was on the warehouse, distribution, and logistics industry. Participants gained knowledge from local industry leaders from FedEx Ground Regional Sortation Center, Southern Eagle Distributing, and Walmart Distribution Center. This tied directly to the newest Career and Technical Education program, Global Logistics and Supply Chain Technology. St. Lucie Public School’s Career and Technical Education department is proud to have collaborated with the Economic Development Council (EDC) for this event!
Sponsored by the Education Foundation and made possible by private donations, students who show proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 to school administration during the month of October will receive a $25 Walmart gift card while supplies last. SLPS continues to encourage all eligible individuals age 12 years old and older to get vaccinated for COVID-19.
6th grade students in Ms. Blackburn’s Science Resource were able to recreate the layers of the atmosphere. This was a great hands-on activity to help show students how some layers are thicker or heavier than others and how they act upon one another.
SGAET Fourth graders culminated their unit on the U.S. Government by welcoming our very own Military Mom, Ms. Patterson, as a guest speaker on Constitution Day! Students gained insight and celebrated with great pride through Nearpod, trivia, and more patriotic fun and games.
Treasure Coast High School’s AFJROTC Cadets participated in honoring Patriot’s Day with a flag folding ceremony as well as a retirement of American Flags no longer serviceable. Each Cadet learned the true meaning behind each fold of the flag and was able to experience just how mesmerizing a flag folding ceremony could be. The United States is the only country who folds its flag in such a manner, and it is important to teach future generations the significance of this tradition. The SLW Centennial Navy JROTC took an educational Field Trip to the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday, September 16th, 2021. The unit had an outstanding time learning the history of the “space race” by starting their field trip at the Heroes & Legends building featuring the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. The Tour continued to the Apollo/Saturn V Center where they learned about the challenges associated with landing the first man on the moon. Students in Ms. Blackburn’s 6th grade Science Resource class are learning about turtles, their habitats, and threats against them. The photo shows students measuring and weighing their turtles to see if they need to be brought in for rehabilitation. Students got to use the same equipment that marine biologists use on the turtles and loved doing it. This great hands-on activity is through the Traveling Trunk Program.
