TRASHKETBALL in 5th Grade ELA = Learning + Competition + FUN! Recently, our 5th-grade ELA classroom turned into a game zone where brains met basketball! Students were paired up and given a challenge: A question popped up on the screen and the 30-second timer started! Partners quickly discussed and wrote their answer on whiteboards. Weatherbee Elementary was thrilled to welcome the Harrison Baseball Team to campus for a special day with our 4th graders! Weatherbee Elementary Captures the Flag in Math Learning Fun

Excitement was in the air in Mrs. Frisby’s classroom as students geared up for an interactive math challenge! Our math coach, Mrs. Proctor, led the class in a high-energy review game called “Capture the Flag” to help students prepare for their Unit 5 District Assessment on decimal comparison and addition and subtraction. Working collaboratively in small groups, students turned to their textbooks to solve problems listed on their index cards. Weatherbee Elementary School joyfully celebrated Dr. Seuss’s Birthday on Monday, March 2nd, with a special visit from the Daughters of the American Revolution, or otherwise known as the DAR! Our kindergarten and first-grade students were delighted as these wonderful ladies spent time reading aloud in classrooms, bringing beloved Dr. Seuss books to life with enthusiasm and expression. Weatherbee Elementary School is proud to partner with United Way of St. Lucie and Okeechobee to provide impactful enrichment groups that support the whole child. Through this partnership, our 5th-grade students are participating in an engaging novel study during small-group sessions. Did you know yoga helps your brain and body grow stronger? In PE, our K–2 students have been exploring yoga as part of our Educational Movement unit. Through stretching, breathing exercises, and mindful movement, students are discovering how yoga improves focus, calmness, strength, flexibility, and balance! Weatherbee Elementary’s 5th Grade Literacy in Action! Our 5th grade students are diving deep into literature by analyzing texts with similar themes! Using a hexagon thinking strategy, students compared how Meg and Buck face challenges related to the theme of survival. By making strong connections, discussing how and why ideas relate, and citing text evidence, students practiced explaining how themes develop across different stories.  This rigorous activity met the Florida B.E.S.T. Standard 5.R.1.2. explain the development of stated or implied theme(s) throughout a literary text.
