On January 22, 2015 students that were selected as Lynx Leader (student of the month) at St. Lucie Elementary were honored at a special ceremony. They were awarded student of the month for showing the character trait of HONESTY in class and on campus. Here, 5th grade student, Javier Carrera, shows off his Lynx Leader certificate!
Cora Stickney Harper Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution was proud to announce the winners of the DAR American History Essay Contest. The contest was open to all public and private schools 5-8th grade. Frances K Sweet Magnet School was proud that all three place holders for fifth grade were from our school. The title for this year’s contest was: “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island”. First Place Adriana Varn, Second Place Brooke Adams, and Third Place Mackenzie Kenney. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion went to Morningside Elementary School to take part in the school’s CSI night. The leaders of the night were the School Resource Officers from Morningside and Port Saint Lucie, Officer White (Morningside). The objective was to use investigative skills taught by the SRO’s to find clues and evidence that they could use to capture the thief of the children’s gifts. The cadets acted as the arresting officers and the students from Morningside Elementary were the investigators. Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition is so honored to win first place for the Martin Luther King Jr. “Week of Kindness”. The school did several activities during that week. Students in all grade levels K-8 decorated their doors with the Kindness theme. A school wide Diversity of Kindness wall was created by students who submitted kindness drawings and sayings. Teachers were given Kindness Coins to pass out to students and teachers for random acts of kindness throughout the week. Seventeen students representing Dan McCarty Middle School recently joined their voices with other middle school singers from around the Treasure Coast area to participate in the Four County Middle School Honors Choir at Indian River State College. Each year, middle and high school choruses from Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties come together to rehearse and perform a concert with guest clinicians. The students are selected based on their musicianship skills and the recommendation of their chorus director. Dr. Rolanda Jones directs the Dan McCarty Middle School chorus.
Middle grades students at Northport K-8 School have been working diligently on learning how to build strong leadership skills. Through a series of guest community leaders, students are learning to generate and pose deeper level questions about a variety of topics and to dig deeper and get into a more provocative atmosphere of questioning. Students have asked extended, well thought out questions of each guest and then have been learning to respond to those questions with follow up questions. Third, Fourth and Fifth grade students competed in the MSE Spelling Bee on January 12, 2015. After 14 rounds of words, Aaron Nieves, a third grader buzzes to the top and wins the competition. Congratulation Aaron!!
Southport Middle School had a wonderful turn out for their very first Literacy Pow Wow Night. Over 100 students, parents, faculty, and staff enjoyed the Hitchiti dancers who put on an amazing show, giving everyone a glimpse of their authentic Native American culture. It was a great night for singing, dancing, eating Native American food and making crafts around the bonfire.
The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion showed their pride at the annual Martin Luther King Junior Day parade in Fort Pierce. Marching in this parade is a tremendous honor and privilege for Port Saint Lucie High. The Battalion formation was led by the Jaguar’s Color Guard was commanded by Cadet Sergeant First Class Jamie Triplett carrying the National Flag. Cadet Second Lieutenant Jonathan Steiner carried the State Flag. Cadet Sergeant First Class Adam Pagan and Cadet Staff Sergeant Seth Taylor posted as Guards. CA Moore had a Take Your Parent to School Day on November 12th for parents to go to their child’s classroom for 30 minutes and observe the teacher conferencing with students. The teachers also gave strategies for parents to assist their children at home with reading. We hope to continue these events, rotating math and reading. We embrace the Kids at Hope philosophy along with the Treasure Hunter’s Pledge and student pledge that is recited daily on our morning show. Northport K-8 School is pleased that we can announce our 2015 Spelling Bee champion. Our first place winner is eighth grade Northstar student, Ashley Quijada who was submitted by instructor, Nick Carey. Ashley will represent Northport at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 14 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. The competition went five rounds with the winning word as “epoch.” Students withstood intense pressure as the words became increasingly more difficult. Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition participated in a Mismatch Day sponsored by the P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) program. Students used their earned rocket fuel for good behavior in the classroom to be able to dress mismatched. Lakewood Park Elementary was nominated and awarded a $500.00 grant from the local Exxon/Mobil location. The award was presented to the faculty by JP Snead Brand, Manager for Southeast Petro Distributors, Inc., which is a part of Exxon Mobil. This money is provided to enhance instruction in the areas of math and science. Lakewood Park Elementary would like to say thanks for this great honor and the funds will be used wisely. Go Falcons!!

Pilot Club members presented a check to the School Board on January 13th for the 2014-2015 Pilot Club Grant. The check in the amount of $1,500 is to be used for the Best Buddies Program at Fort Pierce Central High School. Best Buddies International is a non-profit 501 organization. It consists of volunteers that create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Best Buddies High Schools foster one-to-one friendships between students with and without IDD. The high school years are a time of heightened social and emotional development and can be difficult even for those without IDD. Claretha Robinson was recognized at the School Board Meeting on January 13th as a STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) recipient. Ms. Robinson is the front office clerk for Fort Pierce Westwood High School. Because of the nature of what she does, many times she receives the brunt of those that come in and may be upset, however she always remains true to form. At Mariposa, Mrs. Elizabeth Forbes, first grade teacher, volunteered to serve as the Unicef Coordinator. She turned this into a learning experience for her students. She had enough coins to allow her first graders to sort, count, make patterns, and even count by 5’s and 10’s. What an opportunity! So now these first graders know their coins! Child Nutrition Services launches a Farm to School Program in all school cafeterias. Locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables such as romaine lettuce, oranges, peppers, strawberries and cucumbers will be served to all students starting on Wednesday January 14th. This is just the beginning of many locally grown produce items that will be offered to our students. Students will also learn the nutritional value of the wholesome items that are being offered.
