Congratulations to all of the AP Spanish Language students who passed with scores of 3, 4 and 5. Ms. Denski’s students had a 100% passing rate! These test takers were among the first to take the newly redesigned AP Spanish Language and Culture course which went into effect in fall 2013. The new curriculum integrates the following five themes: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. The Advanced Placement Program enables students to pursue college-level studies with the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. AP Exams are given each year in May. Northport K-8 School has been providing instruction and a variety of opportunities to expand student knowledge, understanding and awareness of individuals with disabilities, disability history and the disability rights movement recently. Disability and History Awareness Instruction was signed into law in 2008 and Northport K-8 School gladly acknowledges the designation of the first two weeks in October as an opportunity to celebrate Inclusion and Awareness. What an awesome day to be in first grade! On Friday we got to dress up and show off our favorite characters in the book of our choice! Everyone in Mrs. West’s first grade class participated by reading their favorite book. Students completed a brown bag book report which included describing the characters, settings, and events of a fictional story. (RL.1.3). Students presented their bags by sharing the characters in their book, a summary they wrote of what happened in the beginning, middle, and end, and showed off the five items they placed inside the bag that represented the book.On … Read More

Hafsa Saeed meets President Obama while attending the Broadcom Masters Science and Engineering competition in Washington DC last month. A true testament of our Greyhound spirit, pride and excellence. She certainly represented us well!!! Hafsa received a medal, $1000 for her school (LPA), $500 for herself, and she got a mini planet and an asteroid named after her and for her sponsored teacher. Science costumes give a whole new meaning to Science vocabulary.  On Wednesday, October 29, 2014, students and teachers at Morningside Elementary dressed up as their favorite Science term.  Some of the terms included texture, stars, clouds, the skeletal system, camouflage, atoms and color.  The students paraded through the halls showing their costumes to their fellow school mates.

Chandler Snowden, Wyatt Clayton, and Cory Rendell are future Electric Engineers who are trying to determine how to effectively increase the strength of an electromagnet at Allapattah Flats.

Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) gave a presentation for second grade at Samuel Gaines Academy. Students learned about what these officers do, how they help the community, and how laws and consequences are carried out. Students were able to see a demonstration with the K-9, as well as, a close look at the trucks and boats FWC uses.

Recently, Fifth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition participated in The Hobe Sound Nature Center Owl Pellets Lab. Students learned about food chains, ecology and natural history. Students found small skeleton parts from rodents, birds and more! They loved this hands on activity and enjoyed being scientists for the day. Pictured is fifth grader Braylen Lopez with a Barred Owl and a Red Tail Hawk from the Hobe Sound Center.

Weatherbee was visited by Ervin Valcin RHD and Patricia Johnson DA, who did a fabulous job seeing our VPK-2nd grade students for a dental screening.  Each year we are fortunate to be able to offer dental screenings to our VPK-2nd grade students at Weatherbee.  Just one more reason to be proud to be a Kids at Hope School! In the picture is Ervin Valcin RDH, John Taylor, a VPK student and Chris Talley LPN.  John’s screening is going great!

Riverside Children’s Theater On the Go came to West Gate K-8 to perform for First Grade.  Students were enthralled with The Tale of Peter Rabbit.  Students enjoyed watching the singing, tap dancing, fun, and adventure in this classic tale. The first graders loved the characters and the humor throughout the show. Students compared the play to the original Book written by Beatrix Potter and wrote opinion papers explaining which version of the story they liked best. Riverside Children’s Theater did a fabulous job! The First Graders at West Gate K-8 hope to see them again soon.  

On Tuesday, October 7, 2014 West Gate K-8 held their first “Million Father March” in conjunction with the SLC School Board initiative. The Million Father March is a national event that promotes a father’s active involvement in the education of their children. West Gate’s event was held in the gym and had over 300 participants. 170 dads signed a contract vowing to be more involved in their children’s lives. Dr. Mark Rendell kicked off Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition’s yearlong reading initiative entitled, “Real Men Read” which encourages all students to read but emphasizes the importance of boys reading.  During his 2 minute video presentation he discussed his love of reading and shared several books that he thinks students would enjoy as well as what he is currently reading.

VPK visited the library and heard a wonderful story from media specialist Ms. Cutchens. She helped them learn about what a librarian does. VPK is so excited about visiting the library again for the book fair.

Northport K-8 Media Center has initiated and developed a brand new program this year called “Leadership Summit!” Students are learning all about leadership skills and what qualities are required to be an effective and inspiring leader. The vision of the program is to not only teach leadership skills through discussion and role modeling, but to bring in community leaders to talk to the students about their own leadership qualities and some of the prominent issues that they face each day. Mission Possible: Helping Younger Readers Access Complex Text was well received by the audience of primary teachers from across the state. October is National Administrator Month and Lincoln Park Academy’s National Honor Society gave a big thank you to our fantastic administrators, Mr. Sanabria, Ms. Stone, Miss Veldhuis and Mr. Lehman.
