The recent county-wide Bowl for Kids Sake event was great fun for an important cause, as funds raised are used to help support such worthwhile programs as the AmeriCorps volunteer reading program. Seventh grade students in Dielma Eusebio’s class at Southport Middle School are reading the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, which is set during the 1960s. Students connect with the characters and the era by dressing up as “greasers,” kids who encountered many challenges in their everyday life due to economic and social pressure. Students learn how appearance played a major role in the lives of these students. Students in Christen McCray’s class at Gaines Academy K8 wrapped up a Nature of Science unit in which they investigated airplanes. Students flew airplanes made from various types of paper to see which would fly the farthest. Students applied the scientific method as they developed a hypothesis, collected, recorded, graphed, analyzed data, drew a conclusion and shared the results. Pictured is Johnnie Velasquez.
The WSPM Channel 2 Morning News crew at Southport Middle School brings fun and breaking news to students and staff every school day morning at 9:45. This fun and informative start to the day has students, faculty and staff involved in what is going on around their campus. News features included are “What’s for Lunch,” “What ‘Cha Reading Wednesdays,” current events, weather, the day’s planned events and much more! First graders at Allapattah Flats K-8 are investigating about fire safety with the help of retired Indian River County Fire Department Battalion Chief John Freeman. Mr. Freeman read an informational text about firefighters and their responsibilities. He also brought his bunker gear including a helmet, boots, pants, coat, and gloves to show the first graders how firefighters stay safe. Students vigorously asked him questions about his gear, job, and his bravery.
The Jaguar Raider Team competed in their first Raider competition this year at Fort Pierce Westwood High School.
Second graders in Kelsey Schumacher’s class explored apples using the scientific method. As scientists, they posed several questions and generated a hypothesis. After gathering the necessary materials, they went to work in the classroom and the science lab to find out if their work supported their hypothesis. After the investigations were over, the students wrote conclusions and shared their findings with each other. Students in Janet Brewi’s middle school science classes then interviewed the younger scientists about their work.
Students in Joe Kline’s eighth grade science classes at Allapattah Flats K-8 have been recently studying atoms. The students completed a hands-on science lab where they created atoms from clay. Students had to create the protons, neutrons, and electrons. In addition, they are building their own periodic table using their own elements — all while calculating the important parts of the atom. As part of their science curriculum, students in Bethany DiTullio’s fourth grade class at Allapattah Flats K8 recently studied physical and chemical changes of matter. As a culminating activity, the students performed four different experiments using baking soda and vinegar, salt and water, glow sticks, and crumbling paper. Students then decided whether a physical or chemical change occurred in each experiment based on their observations and knowledge. St. Lucie West K-8 eighth grade students have found a unique way to learn about the Pythagorean theorem, by putting their problems down on the sidewalks around school! Not only did the students in Carol Matulonis’ class learn about the mathematical theorem, but students viewing their artwork were able to see how it works. Virtual students often express feelings of isolation as they school from home, but not Mosaic Digital Academy students! The St. Lucie school team is committed to keeping students tethered, with live, engaging lessons and live experiences around the beautiful community, promoting a well-rounded student life. Each month there are planned events to engage students with their peers, such as social meet-ups in Tradition where students play ball, Frisbee, and organized games with their teachers. The cadets of Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion showed their support and paid their respects to our missing and captured veterans.
Karol Carvelli, Volunteer Coordinator at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, recently met with all the volunteers for this school year to orient them on the new on-line application system. They also reviewed the volunteer expectations at the school while enjoying morning coffee and sweet rolls.
Lincoln Park Academy’s “Project Lead The Way” teacher, Mark Hueter, was named the “Florida Engineering Society’s 2013 K-12 Teacher of the Year” at their annual event on August 2, 2013. Treasure Coast Chapter President Adam Schildmeier nominated Mr. Hueter for creatively incorporating and promoting engineering and technology concepts and activities into his classroom, truly engaging students and promoting critical thinking. Students in Maria Nunez’s fourth grade class at Mariposa Elementary are studying matter. Pictured, from left, Joslyn Patterson, Sydney Luppens, Faith White, Taline El-Khoury, Alanna Riverahad were asked to measure the volume and mass of objects. Each station had a different activity exploring matter. For example, at one station, students had to find the volume of an irregular object using water displacement. Students were engaged and learned how to work as a team.

Sweet Elementary School fourth grade students Tanyia Chery, Emma Brosnihan, Calvin Bowens, and Quinlen Meservey have been working with the elements of art to create the cover of their sketchbooks. The elements include the study of line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. The students used all the elements except value and form to create their designs. The students use their sketchbooks throughout the school year to practice their drawing skills, take notes, and for some writing assignments to enhance the academics.
Northport K-8 School ponied up lots of great fellowship, money and bowling skills to assist Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County in their efforts to raise much needed funds for the organization’s mentoring and literacy programs. The Northport team consisted of teachers, administrators, friends and family members, as well as lots of cheerleading and support from family and friends.
