Northport K8 Students Tour Publix Supermarket

Northport K-8 School Culinary Arts students, under the direction of instructor, Rachel Ellsworth, visited Publix grocery store on St. James Drive recently to learn about skills necessary for a career in the baking and cooking industry. Students visited the bakery department and learned about sanitation procedures and skills necessary to decorate beautiful cakes. Students were allowed to try their hand at icing and decorating cakes. Students also visited the butcher shop and learned all about the meat cutting and wrapping procedures. The butcher explained all about temperature control, sanitation and cleanliness guidelines. 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Awards

The Grand Parade is the capstone event of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commemorative Celebration. Once again this year, all of our schools participated in the parade. At the April 22, 2014 School Board Meeting, representatives from the Commemorative Celebration Committee presented trophies to the winning schools. Freaky Friday at Morningside

Students at Morningside Elementary switched places with Mrs. Bell-Gray, Principal; Mrs. Roach, vice-principal; and various teachers to help raise money for the Odyssey of the Mind team to go to the World competition. The students enjoyed carrying the radios, visiting classrooms, and teaching other students.

Young Authors Celebrated!

Highlights Magazine illustrator, Sally Springer, was our guest at Morningside Elementary for our Young Author’s celebration . She creates the Hidden Picture for the magazine and gave a hidden picture to each student in honor of their writing and creativity.

Patience at the Parkway Spelling Bee

Parkway students had to have ‘patience’ as they participated in the spelling bee Friday, May 9th. Third place was won by Olivia Hagen , 2nd place by Fabian Liriano, and the champion- spelling the word ‘patience’- was Elexus McMillan.

Northport Choir Ensemble Participated in 10th Anniversary Disney Salute

Northport K-8 middle grades Ensemble Choir participated recently in the 10th Anniversary of Disney Festival. Thirteen girls, accompanied by Northport K-8 staff and parents, represented Northport with aplomb. Students performed an arrangement of Michael Jackson’s hit “ABC” as well as “Hot Chocolate!” with show choir ability. The girls received an “Excellent” rating and were thrilled with the professionalism of larger groups from across the state. Northport Choir Director, James Kirk said, ” The girls were on point! 100th Anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service

On April 22, 2014, the 100th Anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service Resolution was read by Kathryn Hensley and adopted by the School Board. May 8, 2014 marked the centennial of the signing of the Smith-Lever Act which established Cooperative Extension, known in the state of Florida as UF/IFAS Extension and Florida A and M University Extension, the nationwide transformational education system operating through land-grant universities in partnership with federal, state and local government. Northport STEaM Photonics lab going full steam ahead

Northport K-8 School is proud to offer to Northstar team 6, 7, and 8 grade students the opportunity to design, build and implement a STEaM Photonics Lab. The lab allows students to excel in many areas including science, math, engineering and technology that have not previously been explored. Students are utilizing the engineering design process and work in groups to develop a design plan using criteria and constraints, implementation and modification, as well as trouble shooting and executing their final design. State Essay second place winner at Palm Pointe

Seventh grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in a state-wide essay contest sponsored by the Florida League of Cities and Florida League of Mayors. This was endorsed by both Mayor Faiella of Port St. Lucie and Mayor Hudson of Fort Pierce.  Palm Pointe is very  excited to announce that out of more than 1,500 state-wide entries, team Apollo’s Isaiah Thermilus’ essay earned a second place finish.  Each essay had to respond to the prompt “If I were elected mayor…” and Isaiah wrote about what he would do to make our city a better place. … Read More

Water Safety at Weatherbee

Thanks to the Partnership in Education between Weatherbee Elementary and the United States Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce, Weatherbee’s first, third, and fifth graders were able to learn about water safety. Seaman Fawn Moro delivered an informative presentation, teaching the students how to stay safe in, on, and around the water. After the presentation, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary set up the ‘Let’s Talk Trash Game’ and the ‘Fishing Game’ for the students to learn the importance of keeping our waterways clean. Dr. Rendell Presents Thought Provoking Question to Oak Hammock First Grade Students

SLPS Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell presented Mrs. Joy West’s first grade students with some thought-provoking questions that inspired some important discussion after he read the story “Hey, Little Ant.” To squish or not to squish? What would you do if the ant you were about to step on looked up and started talking? After Dr. Rendell left, students became real life authors and wrote opinion pieces identifying the reasons they gave to support their text.

Mariposa Kindergarteners visit the 4-H Farm

All the Kindergarten students at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed a hands-on experience at the 4-H Farm. This field trip enhanced their classroom lessons on animals and learning about gardens as they were able to touch the fur of a donkey, pony, horse, calf, goat, sheep and even a pig. Jabari Monds, Jake Legentus, Anthony Sarver, and Lumarion Gardenhire wait in anticipation of getting to feel the hair of the donkey. They looked at the similarities and differences of the animals to compare and contrast and had fun learning about what our farm friends do for us!

On April 3 – 6, 2014 Saint Lucie West Centennial HOSA traveled to their State Leadership Conference at Coronado Springs Resort in Walt Disney World. Over the course of the four days, two students qualified to attend HOSA’s National Leadership Conference. Alexia Stewart placed in the recognition event for Outstanding HOSA Chapter competing against twelve other regions with hundreds of other HOSA chapters.
