Frances K Sweet celebrated Literacy Week by inviting dads in to read to classes. The students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class enjoyed being read to by Reverend Ham. His son, Thomas, was beyond thrilled to have his dad read one of his favorite books to his class.
Bayshore Elementary School students participated in Celebrate Literacy Week! Fourth and fifth grade students had a visit from author Michael Anthony Steele who shared his experiences as a writer and screenwriter. Students and teachers from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) along with private pre-kindergarten partners rallied in the month of January to collect dimes in support of March of Dimes March for Babies. On Wednesday, students and teachers convened at Lawnwood Stadium to run the track in segments. Collectively, the segments represented the distance of the total number of dimes collected if they were to be placed side-by-side. 58,880 dimes were collected! In distance, that equates to approximately 2.5 miles; in dollars, that equates to $5,880.00. In an effort to continually improve the safety and security of your children, St. Lucie Public Schools will be using a new visitor management system called Raptor beginning February 17th. All campus visitors, including parents and alumni, will need to have their driver’s license or military ID available. The Raptor system accesses a national database, preventing anyone who should not be on our campus from gaining access. Southport students celebrated Literacy Week with a giant book swap, popcorn, raffles, and a beautiful afternoon in the courtyard. Students were asked to bring in a gently used book they have read and enjoyed, and would recommend to a friend. There were plenty of wonderful books to choose from. The book exchange was just one of the fun ways students had the chance to celebrate literacy with their fellow classmates.
Allapattah Flats K8 hosted a fun-filled literacy event called Books and Blankets, January 15th. Reading stations included the integration of math and science. Families rotated through stations led by teachers and staff. Some stations were set up outside and teachers read to students with flashlights and lanterns. We also had a visit from some nocturnal animals. Families enjoyed reading under the stars, making crafts, and gazing into the sky with telescopes.
Four Oak Hammock Band students were selected to participate in Indian River State College’s Four County Honor Band. Each year students are selected from the band programs at all schools in Saint Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee and Indian River Counties for the Four County Honor Band.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary annually recognize the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively. Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism are prime candidates for this award. The local VFW’s of Martin County, St Lucie County, Indian River County, Okeechobee County, Glades, and Hendry County are proud to elect Michelle Smith, second grade teacher at Mariposa Elementary School in St Lucie County, this year for the elementary award. For 36 male students at Weatherbee Elementary, It was an exciting lunch. Indeed, Commissioner Kim Johnson was the guest of honor at the Peer Leadership Luncheon. This luncheon is special program targeting African American male students with low reading proficiency or social/emotional challenges. Every month, these students get together for lunch as they are being motivated by successful African American males from the community. Students in Grades K-5 ran laps to raise funds for Morningside PTO. Throughout the previous week Boosterthon personnel (funrun.com) and the PTO conducted a pep rally, sent out information, and presented fitness, leadership and character lessons as the students participated. Sponsors and parents pledged per lap or a set amount to help the students, and each students goal was to walk, dance, hop, or run 35 mini laps.
Fifth grade students, Jaden Finch, Levi Jackson and Liliana Rivera, worked together as a group to complete their STEAM design challenge. Their goal was to create a water slide that was tall and safe by bringing a marble to the bottom and landing in a cup. In this design challenge the students incorporated their knowledge of force, motion, friction, building, measuring and creating prototypes!
Northport K-8 School was so pleased to participate with hundreds of other schools across Saint Lucie County and the state of Florida in the annual “Celebrate Literacy, Florida” initiative. Northport students were able to participate in a wide array of events including, “Buddy Reading Day” where students partnered with younger or older children to read, “Reading Rocks, Crazy Socks Day”, “Drop Everything and Read Day”, “Buddy Bear Reading Day” and “Community Reading Day.” The school welcomed twelve local veterans from the “Northport Veterans Partners in Education Program”, Superintendent, Genelle Yost and school board member, Deborah Hawley to read to our … Read More
On January 22, 2015 students that were selected as Lynx Leader (student of the month) at St. Lucie Elementary were honored at a special ceremony. Cora Stickney Harper Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution was proud to announce the winners of the DAR American History Essay Contest. The contest was open to all public and private schools 5-8th grade. Frances K Sweet Magnet School was proud that all three place holders for fifth grade were from our school. The title for this year’s contest was: “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island”. First Place Adriana Varn, Second Place Brooke Adams, and Third Place Mackenzie Kenney. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion went to Morningside Elementary School to take part in the school’s CSI night. The leaders of the night were the School Resource Officers from Morningside and Port Saint Lucie, Officer White (Morningside). The objective was to use investigative skills taught by the SRO’s to find clues and evidence that they could use to capture the thief of the children’s gifts. The cadets acted as the arresting officers and the students from Morningside Elementary were the investigators. Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition is so honored to win first place for the Martin Luther King Jr. “Week of Kindness”. The school did several activities during that week. Students in all grade levels K-8 decorated their doors with the Kindness theme. A school wide Diversity of Kindness wall was created by students who submitted kindness drawings and sayings. Teachers were given Kindness Coins to pass out to students and teachers for random acts of kindness throughout the week. Seventeen students representing Dan McCarty Middle School recently joined their voices with other middle school singers from around the Treasure Coast area to participate in the Four County Middle School Honors Choir at Indian River State College. Each year, middle and high school choruses from Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties come together to rehearse and perform a concert with guest clinicians. The students are selected based on their musicianship skills and the recommendation of their chorus director. Dr. Rolanda Jones directs the Dan McCarty Middle School chorus.
Middle grades students at Northport K-8 School have been working diligently on learning how to build strong leadership skills. Through a series of guest community leaders, students are learning to generate and pose deeper level questions about a variety of topics and to dig deeper and get into a more provocative atmosphere of questioning. Students have asked extended, well thought out questions of each guest and then have been learning to respond to those questions with follow up questions. Third, Fourth and Fifth grade students competed in the MSE Spelling Bee on January 12, 2015. After 14 rounds of words, Aaron Nieves, a third grader buzzes to the top and wins the competition. Congratulation Aaron!!
Southport Middle School had a wonderful turn out for their very first Literacy Pow Wow Night. Over 100 students, parents, faculty, and staff enjoyed the Hitchiti dancers who put on an amazing show, giving everyone a glimpse of their authentic Native American culture. It was a great night for singing, dancing, eating Native American food and making crafts around the bonfire.
