Dads, Granddads and male caregivers wanted to be more involved in their students’ education, so this week Morningside Elementary dedicated two days to “Real Men Read.” This program allows men in the students’ lives to come into the classroom and read to their children and their children’s classmates.
Mrs. Anderson, 5th grade reading teacher, is celebrating as WPBF’S Weather School Superstar of the week. Cris Martinez surprised Mrs. Erica Anderson with this week’s honor.

A team of students from Ft. Pierce Magnet School of the Arts (FPMSA) is working hand in paw with the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, Inc. Dr. Norman Webb presented an institute about his Depth of Knowledge (DoK) system at the Florida Reading Association Fall Conference. Educators had an opportunity to learn about his studies regarding alignment between curriculum standards and assessment, along with an in-depth look at the application of the DoK system within the classroom. On Wednesday, October 28, the Van Duzer Foundation hosted a fund raiser for Rivers Edge Principal, Kerri Walukiewicz, at the Big Apple Pizza near IRSC. PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – Walmart awarded 20 teachers from Allapattah Flats K-8 School with $50 reward cards to purchase classroom supplies that will help students as part of the company’s Teacher Rewards program. For the sixth year, Walmart will donate over $4.5 million to provide 90,000 teachers across the United States with reward cards to help offset the cost of classroom expenses at the beginning of the school year. Manatee Academy 4th and 5th grades were enraptured by the performance of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by The Riverside Children’s Theatre professional group this week. Students and teachers have been reading the Narnia books for the last month and thought this interactive interpretation was “Awesome!”
REE hosted their annual Bingo for Books with a Halloween twist thrown in. Coupling it with a Title 1 presentation, the students then paraded by grade level across the stage in their costumes. Bingo then ensued with students winning a book every time they achieved BINGO! Our ever fabulous PTO handily decorated the cafeteria and gave out creepy treats! Everyone went home with a book and a smile!

Village Green Environmental Studies School brought storybook characters to life through a pumpkin decorating contest. Students were able to vote for their favorite pumpkin using earned Manatee Moola.
“Respect Yourself, Be Drug Free” was the Red Ribbon Week theme this year. Students at Village Green Environmental Studies School participated in several anti-drug/anti bullying activities, some of which included: creating posters, signing pledges, and a presentation by Joe the Biker.
St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent recently accepted a donation of 200 sackpacks containing essential school supplies from the Office Depot Business Solutions Division. The sackpacks will be distributed to deserving students within the school district. The donations were made as part of the Office Depot and Office Depot Foundation’s award-winning National Backpack Program, through which the company gives children important tools they need to succeed in school – and in life – every school year.
