Lawnwood Elementary students host event to benefit PTO

The students of Lawnwood Elementary School hosted a Walk-A-Thon with students maneuvering an obstacle course to raise money for the PTO and their many school sponsored events. Lawnwood Elementary Students Enjoyed the Talk Like a Pirate PBiS/STEM Event

Lawnwood students enjoyed the Talk Like a Pirate PBiS/STEM Event.  Students participated in a sink or float activity to test the density of different objects by putting them in water. This was a great way to learn about weight and buoyancy.  The students made their predictions and used a graphic organizer to record the results.  Go LEOPARDS!

Lawnwood Elementary Students Enjoyed the Eco Guardians Performance

Lawnwood Elementary students enjoyed the Eco Guardians Performance.  With the help of Nikki Neutron, a superhero for the energy-saving Eco Guardians, Grades K-5 students learned about energy efficiency.  In summary, students learned about the importance of energy conservation and ways they can help save energy.  GO LEOPARDS!

Lawnwood Elementary Students Enjoyed a Yummy Math Snack

First Grade students from Lawnwood Elementary enjoyed a yummy snack as they explored place value and the properties of operation for addition and subtraction. Students used marshmallows and gummy worms as concrete models to deepen their understanding of place value concepts. GO LEOPARDS!

Lawnwood Elementary students earn healthy habits writing prize

Students in Susie Lewis’ classroom at Lawnwood Elementary School recently learned they had earned second prize in the Lysol Healthy Habits Story writing contest sponsored by Scholastic Parent and Child magazine. For the students’ “incredible effort, concept and execution”, the school is being awarded $5,000 and a set of 25 books for Ms. Lewis’ classroom. Pictured is the winning classroom of students.

Lawnwood Elementary Students Celebrated the Contributions of Influential African Americans During Black History Month

All K-5 Lawnwood classes completed a group project.  Students learned about influential African American Entertainers, Athletes, Scientists, Inventors, Entrepreneurs, Government Leaders, and Writers.  Display boards were developed to highlight the accomplishments, awards, and contributions made by these great leaders.  Projects featured Langston Hughes, Ruby Bridges, Patricia Bath, Madame CJ Walker, Garrett Morgan, Kyrie Irving, and many more historical figures.  A special thank you goes out to Mrs. D’Jion Jackson, Dr. Jodie Certosimo, Dr. Leinitia Robinson, and Mrs. Michelle Barreto for using a rubric to rate all projects and select the top three.  Hats off to all LWN teachers for making … Read More

Lawnwood Elementary Students are Learning about Mae Jemison

Lawnwood Leopards are celebrating Black History Month.  Ms. Frazier’s VPK students read books and completed art projects in honor of Mae Jemison.  Mae Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. Jemison joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which the Endeavour orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992.    

Lawnwood Elementary Students are Developing Their Critical Thinking Skills

Mrs. Ferrara-Slater’s students participated in an engaging, hands-on learning experience as they explored the parts of a flower and the process of pollination and fertilization. This activity not only taught them about the anatomy of a flower, but also demonstrated the important role that animals, like bees and other pollinators, play in the reproduction of plants and flowers. Lawnwood Elementary students adopt deployed army unit

Alyceson Laidlaw, Ladies Auxiliary secretary, VFW Post 8058 presents Lawnwood Elementary students with their Buddy Poppies. These students have adopted U.S. ARMY Arcent G2, which is in its first deployment in Kuwait. The students are writing letters, sending pictures, and collecting personal supplies to be sent to Afghanistan over the holiday season. Lawnwood Elementary student earns college scholarship with project

Second grade Lawnwood Elementary School student Hailey Daniels, from Susan Lewis’ class, was recently notified she has been awarded a full scholarship to a private college in Alabama after completing a Flat Stanley Project centered around the college. Hailey wanted to know what kind of food people from Alabama served, historical places to visit and what kids enjoyed doing for fun. Lawnwood Elementary Staff Members are TREASURE HUNTERS! The faculty and staff members of Lawnwood Elementary participated in a Kids At Hope professional learning opportunity.  Mr. Kevin Singletary, Kids At Hope Training Coordinator & Treasure Hunter, provided a training for the treasure hunters of Lawnwood Elementary.  We believe all children are capable of success, No EXCEPTIONS!  

Lawnwood Elementary spelling bee participants celebrate
