Oak Hammock K-8 Girls on the Run Gives Back

Each season, with the guidance of Ms. Nancy Branim and Ms. Amber Martin, the Girls on the Run participants choose a project that positively impacts their community. The Girls on the Run participants at Oak Hammock K-8 converted an old newspaper dispenser into a Little Free Library. The girls beautified their Little Free Library by painting positive messages they learned throughout the program onto the old newspaper dispenser. The girls want to make sure all students feel inspired, valued and have access to a library that offers books that are free for all students.

Oak Hammock K-8 First Graders Vote: Citizenship & Math in Action

Recently, our Oak Hammock K-8 first graders participated in an exciting, hands-on voting activity that brought social studies and math benchmarks to life. The lesson centered on citizenship, helping young learners grasp the importance of making choices and having a voice in their community. To make the experience fun and relatable, students voted on the topic: Which pet is the favorite—dog, cat, or fish? Oak Hammock K-8 First-Grade Students Learn to Take Their Time

Students in Ms. Reynolds’s first-grade class incorporated a STEM activity to help identify and explain the moral of their text, When I Hurry. Students collaborated with their table partner to create and build a tower from toothpicks and mini marshmallows. This STEM activity gave the students an opportunity to demonstrate the lesson vocabulary: teamwork, problem-solving, cleverness, and strength. The Osprey family is proud of the student’s accomplishment and their ability to take their time and build their best tower.

OAK HAMMOCK K-8 ELEMENTARY ESE STUDENTS EXPLORE PUMPKIN LIFE CYCLE

Ms. Quinn’s K-5 ESE class is learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin. The students conducted an experiment to see what conditions would be the best for growing pumpkin seeds. They created three environments for testing: a plastic bag, a cup and a pumpkin. The students were excited to see the results of their experiments with sprouts growing.

Oak Hammock K-8 honored outstanding young scientists during its annual Science Fair Awards Ceremony, a showcase of creativity, critical thinking, and scientific discovery. Students in grades 6–8 displayed their projects that demonstrated impressive research skills and innovative problem-solving, earning well-deserved recognition for their efforts. Families filled the event space with excitement as they explored the winning projects, gaining a firsthand look at the ingenuity and dedication behind each experiment. Oak Hammock K-8 Celebrate Unity Day

Students and staff at Oak Hammock K-8 wore orange to make a unified statement against bullying.  The middle school students celebrated Unity Day by promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no one should ever experience bullying and to pledge to end bullying.  Students in grades K-5 created a unique banner to make a powerful statement that Oak Hammock K-8 is a Bully Free Zone.

Oak Hammock K-8 7th Grade Raptors Keep It Simple

Students on the 7th grade Raptors team at Oak Hammock K-8, welcome the start of the school year by creating personal and academic goals. The overarching theme for this school year is #WorkHardBeNice. Students discussed what it meant to them and how they could incorporate the theme into their academics and Social & Emotional Learning. As a team focus, they are determined to never give up and to work hard and be nice as they help each other achieve the goals as displayed on the bees throughout their learning environment. In preparation for Literacy Week in January, Literacy Coach Rachel Sullivan videotaped fourth graders in Dorothy Levin’s class “Taking the Lead  to Read” with Kindergarteners in Brandi Goulding’s class. Oak Hammock and Manatee Academy students book chat via technology

Students from Oak Hammock K8 and Manatee Academy K8 recently had the opportunity to chat about favorite books via video conferencing. Both schools are participating in the Young Adult Choice (YAC) program, where students in grades 7-12 get to read and vote for their favorite new books. During the video conference, students from both schools shared their favorite new YAC books. Amazing book talks from students left the young readers anxious to read more! Oak Hammock 8th Grade Students Creation of Dueling Historical Heads

Students in Mr. McNab’s 8th Grade Early American History class were challenged to create visual representations of Alexander Hamilton’s and Thomas Jefferson’s opposing viewpoints and ideas for the new country.   Students used the course textbook as well as internet resources to illustrate and describe: The Constitution, National Bank, Structure of Government, Human Nature and Economic or French Revolution. Students were encouraged to use similes or metaphors in their drawings as they created a visual of the viewpoints that connected to the theme and title.      

Oak Hammock 7th Grade Students Investigate Adaptations of Darwin’s Finches

Students in Ms. Seaton’s 7th grade science class spent some time using different tools which simulate the various possible beaks that birds on the Galapagus Islands have. Students made hypotheses then tested the efficiency of each beak, and then went on to do increased competition as resources dwindled. They were able to make the connection between their hands on experience and how adaptations and competition affects survival of the fittest. Oak Hammock 6th Grade K-8 Students Explore the History of Communication

In recognition of National History Day, students in Mr. Sherrer’s 6th Grade World History class, created projects from researching a topic that was historically important, related to the theme, and one the student had a genuine interest in. This year’s theme is Communication in History: The Key to Understanding. The theme challenged students to consider how individuals exchange information and interact with one another. Nutcrackers help Lawnwood Elementary writing students learn character development

The students in Carolyn Bates’s first grade class at Lawnwood Elementary School are writing about literary characters using their collection of nutcrackers. Students recently took a field trip to The Sunrise Theatre in downtown Fort Pierce to see a production of The Nutcracker Ballet, and then wrote about their favorite moments adding illustrations and captions. The students then presented their writing to the rest of the class. Pictured are Ms. Bates and students in the class’ Writer’s Club.

Nursing Assistant Students Visit Keiser University, Port St. Lucie Campus

Students enrolled in one of the Nursing Assistant programs within St. Lucie Public Schools were at Keiser University (Tradition Campus) for a full day of simulated learning.  All participating students were given a tour of the campus, worked with college professors and nursing students, gained knowledge on the application process, along with financial aid and scholarship opportunities.  The highlight for all participating students was working side-by-side for simulated clinical level training on advanced medical equipment.  Students completed hands-on learning and demonstrations in various programs including Psychology, Dietetics & Nutrition, Exercise Science, Sports Management, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, Medical Assisting, and Biomedical … Read More

Nursing Assistant Students Visit IRSC’s Health Science and Nursing Programs

Nursing Assistant students from Port St. Lucie High School and St. Lucie West Centennial High School participated in the Indian River State College’s (IRSC) Health Science and Nursing programs’ tour and simulation day! Students worked with the IRSC Nursing students and faculty to get hands-on demonstrations and simulated learning. Students rotated through various presentations to include skill lab training and learning, admission process, opportunities after high school graduation, financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and more!
