This lab provided Lincoln Park students with a first-hand experience of how forensic scientists use DNA to connect suspects to crimes. The students were able to make a connection to the material on a deeper level. Next week the students will make their weekly venture to Harbor Branch for a mark & recapture field lab.  

On Wednesday, September 7, parents and students attended a Title 1 Annual Parent Meeting at Oak Hammock K-8 School. Parents were informed of Title 1 policy requirements, standards and testing, parents and guardian rights, and the benefits of parent involvement. The Annual Title 1 Night was an opportunity to highlight the school’s theme of “Building Success Together with Positive Connections” to increase student and family engagement. Families were engaged in building LEGO friends together and enjoyed some refreshing Kona Ice to end the evening.

On Saturday, September 10th, 2022, the Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Jaguar Battalion conducted their first car wash of the school year at O’Reilly’s located off of US-1. Cadets were placed in different teams such as the wash team, dry team, and sign holding teams. It was a great success and a good way for our first-year cadets to see how we give back to our community.

The first pep rally of the year marks the beginning of a season of celebration! More than a single sports team-the band, color guard, cheerleaders, and dance teams are high performing athletes rallying around Cobra nation in the traditional purple and gold style. Lincoln Park Academy’s IB Biology Seniors learned the Mark-Recapture technique at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Over the course of two days, Mr. Messina and his students were able to estimate the size of a population of mangrove snails by capturing a small number of snails and releasing them back into the population. When provided the opportunity, students form a deeper understanding of the content with a hands-on approach rather than sitting in a classroom lecture.

Weatherbee Elementary celebrated grandparents with a wonderful breakfast on Wednesday, September 14. An astounding 200 grandparents were in attendance!

The favorite part of Superintendent Dr. Prince’s week is when he visits schools! Last week, he stopped by Manatee Academy K8 and had the privilege of visiting both Kindergarten and 5th-grade classrooms.  The students were very excited to share with the Superintendent what they were learning and had the chance to ask him questions about his job.  Dr. Prince had the opportunity to participate in a circle time goal-setting activity with students!  

Jacey Lane (10th grade) opened her 2022 cross country season by winning first place at the St. Lucie West Centennial Cross Country Invitational on August 24th.  She also won first place at the Wayne Cross Invitational on August 31st by finishing the 3.1 mile course in her career best time of 20:37.  Congratulations on a job well done!

Students in Anatomy class listened to a Sickle Cell Anemia Presentation to recognize September as Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. Students are applying the knowledge learned in Anatomy to real-world health issues. Thank you to our presenters!

Junior Emma Chancey competed in the St. Lucie County Farm Bureau’s Speech Contest. She spoke about agriculture and our community. She won second place. State Representative Dana Trabulsy judged the contest. Way to go Emma!

Middle School Artists studied the use of mixed media to create a unique animal collage with watercolor, newspapers, oil pastels, and India ink. Their creative masterpieces are proudly displayed in the Palm Pointe front office.  

St. Lucie Public School District is excited to announce the annual college fair on Tuesday, September 27th from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Havert Fenn Center. Over 50 college and university representatives will be there to meet with prospective students. You will also be able to participate in financial aid sessions to get valuable information about paying for college. SLPS students in grades 9 through 12 are encouraged to attend. The Weatherbee administrative team read a school-wide read-aloud of the book The Magical Yet to launch the school theme of growth mindset. Students were able to follow along with their very own copy! Classes were also able to take pictures in front of a beautiful sign donated by Card My Yard of St. Lucie.

As school assessments roll out across campus, Northport K-8 is taking measures to help parents understand the new testing program, Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST).  FAST Assessments replaced the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), which was the previous standardized state assessment used in Florida. Mr. McIntosh’s class investigates the effects of temperature and pH on liver enzymes in a lab activity during pre-AICE Biology. Students collaborated to assign roles and synergized throughout the experiment.

The NED Show is an innovative, character education assembly. Using humor, storytelling, audience participation, and amazing object lessons including yo-yo and magic tricks, Village Green students learned through the adventures of NED, a character kids (and adults) can relate to. His name is an acronym for: (N)ever Give Up (E)ncourage Others (D)o Your Best The NED Program used a multi-sensory learning model to motivate, encourage, and inspire our students to become champions at school and in life.
