Samuel S. Gaines Essay Contest Winners Announced

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – The winners of the ninth annual Dr. Samuel S. Gaines Essay Contest were recognized at the May 9th, 2017, St. Lucie County School Board Meeting. The contest, sponsored by Proctor Construction Company which provides cash prizes for the winning entries, is part of the district’s recognition and celebration of African American history. Samuel S. Gaines Academy Student Leaders Enjoy Club Day in the Colt Pantry

At Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies, student leaders who are members of the Pantry Club come together every other Friday to organize their school pantry and make weekend bags of non-perishable food items for families. The school pantry is sponsored by the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The students assigned each other roles such as inspector and pantry manager to increase the productivity and efficiency of their club days. Students were smiling and laughing as they collaborated. Congratulations to Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies for being recognized as a U.S. Showcase Incubator School! They are one of only 24 Incubator Schools across the U.S. that have committed to an education transformation journey with Microsoft Education. They join hundreds of other Microsoft Incubator and Showcase Schools across the globe actively empowering the students of today to create the world of tomorrow. Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies 8th-Grade Science Students Win Big!

Mr. Nicks’ 8th-grade science students have drastically improved their Penda engagement and scores after he put a World Championship Belt in play. The student who earns the most points each week gets to wear the belt for the week. Mr. Nicks even made a special section on his big data tracker to display all the winners. Mr. Nicks’ classes also use our Leader in Me mentality to create a WIG (wildly important goal) along with action steps to accomplishing the WIG and they keep it in the forefront by adding it to the data tracker.

Samuel S. Gaines Academy Multicultural Showcase

Colt Nation’s fourth grade kicked off its November theme of diversity and inclusion with a multicultural showcase. It was all hands on deck as administrators, teachers, and staff dazzled students with their heartwarming stories and shared experiences. In anticipation of this event, students researched diverse cultures, created personal artifacts, and deepened their application of their Leader in Me habits. The showcase served as a beautiful reminder of unity in action!

Samuel S. Gaines Academy Kindergarten Technology

Kindergarten students at Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies are practicing reading and writing their sight words with the Nearpod student engagement platform. Thanks to the wonderful Kindergarten teachers for becoming Nearpod certified educators.  They are always finding new ways to challenge and engage their students with technology! #SLPSMagnet              

Samuel S. Gaines Academy Free Book Fair

The Children’s Services Council, in conjunction with United Way, provided all students at Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies with THREE books. All students got to walk through our upcoming “Free Book Fair” to select their books. Representatives from both agencies joined Superintendent E. Wayne Gent to present books to all of our 1st graders. Students were so excited to be gifted with these books! The books were provided through the St. Lucie Reads Initiative. We are so grateful to have been included in this program.

Samuel S. Gaines Academy Celebrates Kids at Hope Day

Samuel S. Gaines Academy celebrated National Kids at Hope Day during the week of November 10th – 14th.  Staff and students proudly showed their Kids at Hope spirit by wearing Kids at Hope shirts or any blue and yellow shirts during the week. Each day, students discussed their Aces on the morning announcements. Students held up a poster-sized Ace card, described their Ace of Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, Spades, and explained why they are important. ST. LUCIE COUNTY – The Kids at Hope Garden at Samuel S. Gaines Academy (SGA) sprang to life as thirty Home Depot employees and volunteers gathered to enhance campus grounds.  After recently receiving a Home Depot Foundation grant, volunteers installed an irrigation system, built plant boxes and fences, transplanted trees, and beautified the school’s garden area with new sod and mulch. Samuel Gaines Academy’s National Junior Honor Society Inducts 58 Middle School Students

Faculty and Staff of Sam Gaines Academy are proud to announce that  58 middle school students met eligibility qualifications for the National Junior Honor Society.   These students have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, exemplary conduct, manners and behavior as well as leadership qualities.  Dr. Donna Mills challenged and encouraged the students as the guest speaker at the Induction Ceremony this past March 20th.   We are proud of our 58 colts in our middle school National Junior Honor Society, and we are excited for what the future holds for each one.

Dr. Danni Hoey from Indian River State College addressed students at Samuel Gaines Academy during the December Speakers Bureau presentation.  The Speakers Bureau is a valuable channel of communication between students and community leaders.

Samuel Gaines Academy Teacher Nationally Recognized

Mrs. Marsha Mimnaugh, Reading Interventionist at Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 15 Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The Endowment is a federal agency that, each summer, supports these enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions so teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines. Samuel Gaines Academy Science Expo

The science teachers of Samuel Gaines Academy K-8 worked collaboratively to create a Science Expo for 5th & 8th grade students. The purpose of the event was to prepare students for the FCAT Science Assessment.  Several community and district level science experts sponsored standards based curriculum stations where students interacted with activities specific to their learning needs as determined by the analysis of assessment data. Samuel Gaines Academy Fundraiser for March of Dimes

The students of Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies were excited to raise money to benefit the March of Dimes.  Students were asked to make donations and they were able to choose a bucket in which to place their donations. Each bucket represented a different administrator on campus.  The administrators’ buckets with the most money received a pie in the face!  Students could also purchase raffle tickets to be chosen as a pie thrower.  Thank you to everyone at SGAET who donated to this worthy cause!

Sams Club Celebrates White City Elementary

Sam’s Community Outreach program recently came to honor White City Elementary. Staff was recognized for their compassion and caring not only about their students but also for their families. Everyone enjoyed gift cards, prizes, and dessert all provided by Sam’s.
