Ms. Burton’s and Ms. Barberi’s 5th grade social studies students were given a challenge to conquer over winter break! If upon their return, they could write down all 50 states and capitals without assistance, they would receive 50 Mariner Dollars. Furthermore, they could use 25 of those Mariner Dollars for a kid’s lunch at Wendy’s. Jordan Muldrow and Ever Cabrera were able to complete the mission! Congratulations, gentlemen, on a job well done!
Lakewood Park Elementary students are lucky to be able to participate in different resource classes. Students at Lakewood Park Elementary participate every week in drama class. In Ms. Gardner’s drama class, students do a variety of activities appropriate to their age level, including gameplay, acting out scenes, and improvising skits. Sixth graders at CAST created catapults using a variety of objects for a Stop and STEAM event on campus. They practiced the Nature of Science standards as they understood how to make adjustments to their catapult designs to reach the desired effect. “I was really impressed that many of my virtual students were able to build great catapults with items found in their home!”- Mrs. Albers
Mrs. Dana Tillberg, School Counselor at Mosaic Digital Academy, has been hosting a “Get My Job” series via zoom since the beginning of November. The series is designed to provide students with opportunities to interact with professionals to provide more in-depth knowledge about career paths and real-life experiences and ultimately to learn what it takes to “get their job.” The target audience is students in Grades 7-12. With the money awarded, Mrs. Chenoweth will purchase anti-blue light screens for every student laptop in her classroom. Phil Depuy, Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Instructor at Treasure Coast High hosted a virtual Field Trip informing students about the Pre-apprenticeship and local Apprenticeship opportunities. Dawn Riccardi and Marcelo Dossantos from CareerSource-Research Coast presented to the high school Manufacturing/Engineering students. Chef Chris Gedke, Culinary Arts Instructor at St Lucie West Centennial High and her Culinary Arts students are cooking chicken noodle soup! It’s warm, nourishing, and delicious. Chef Gedke and her students are selling cups of soup this week as a fundraiser for their program activities. Level up CTE!
During the recent Holocaust Education Week, middle school artists read and studied the book entitled, The Very Last Butterfly. The book is a collection of artwork and poetry written by the children who were imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp. Our artists created butterflies in remembrance of the 1.5 million children’s lives who were lost during the Holocaust.
Three senior cadets in the AFJROTC program at TCHS–Mateo Franqui, Dominik Heintz, and Alex Antonakos–earned their Part 107 license through the Federal Aviation Administration. By passing this rigorous exam, they can operate Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUAS) commercially and in the national airspace system, opening tremendously lucrative employment opportunities. Their certification and licensing are the result of succeeding in the classroom through two years of dual enrollment classes taught and offered by the TCHS AFJROTC program through Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Mariposa Elementary 3rd grade teacher, Ron Smith, won educational supplies for his entire class just by answering a few questions! His students received bags that included two books published by Port St. Lucie Utility Systems: Water Hugs and Who is Francis FOGberg?, plus Water Cycle Wristband and Toilet Paper Roll Rainbow Windsock Activity Kits, and lots more. Mr. Smith participated in a survey about Utility Systems’ new online video library called “Little Lessons.” This free resource was created especially for educators, teachers, and home-school groups to make teaching certain topics a bit easier. Third grade students at Morningside Elementary participated in researching the life and art of abstract artists such as Pablo Picasso during their enrichment MTSS. They were able to identify how the illustrations and art enhanced the mood of the stories they were reading. Then, they replicated one of Picasso’s famous works called “The Three Musicians”. Students created collages by layering geometric shapes, construction paper cutouts, paint and other materials to create these eye catching masterpieces.
Kindergartners and first graders in Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Benton’s class at CAST constructed safe and warm shelters for an arctic animal of their choice during a Stop & STEAM event. Students also enjoyed adding to their animal’s home by painting the setting of where their animals live to complete their landscape. This project culminated all of their learning about the seasons and weather.

Congratulations to Jason Hatfield on receiving the Linda Mann Five Year Superior award from the Florida Bandmasters State Association. This is his second consecutive time receiving the award. His bands have maintained the top rating from the state for 10 straight years. This is an extremely difficult accomplishment. Congratulations to Mr. Hatfield, Principal Kathleen Perez and the Palm Pointe Band Program.
Although the Martin Luther King Jr. parade was canceled this year due to COVID, media arts students at CAST highlighted clips from the parade that occurred last year. The morning news anchors created a special message about the power of togetherness in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Mrs. Jaramillo’s Kindergarten class at Rivers Edge Elementary is experiencing ways to use technology in the classroom. They reviewed addition and subtraction in a fun and interactive way using Nearpod. They can’t wait to use Nearpod in different subject areas.
Congratulations to Sienna Lawrence, sixth grader and Mr. Cruz, Visual Arts teacher at Creative Arts Academy! Sienna placed as a runner-up in the “Art in the Capitol” contest. This annual contest for middle school students is designed to bring attention to the arts in education. Sienna’s artwork will be placed in State Representative Dana Trabulsy’s office in Tallahassee. Mr. Cruz encouraged Sienna to use this contest as an avenue to create a piece centered on social consciousness.
Ms. Cruz’s seventh graders worked on a web quest to discover more about different types of rocks, characteristics of rocks, and the process of weathering. Students also conducted their own research to investigate the rock cycle. Students additionally explored a virtual rock lab! Rock on!
