Weatherbee Mariners bid adieu to Celebrate Literacy Week!, Florida 2018 with an old fashioned parade. On Friday afternoon, students and staff joined the magnificent cavalcade of favorite book characters and vocabulary words parading through our hallways. It was the crowning glory of a week filled with classroom door decorating, buddy reading, Dropping Everything And Reading, creating personalized bookmarks, and more. Thanks to Literacy Coach Heather Bolitho and the amazing Literacy Committee for promoting a love of literacy at Weatherbee. .

St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) bears the distinction of receiving a sizeable federal Magnet School Assistance Program Grant (MSAP) valued at 12.5 million dollars. The District’s winning grant proposal will transform the historic Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts (FPMSA), Samuel S. Gaines Academy (SGA), and Fort Pierce Westwood High School (FPWHS). All three schools will become Magnet Schools offering innovative programs. On Friday, January 19, students from local high schools competed in a battle of academic with-it-ness that challenged team members’ knowledge of philosophy and humanities, advanced mathematics and scientific theory, as well as a broad range of literature, music, and foreign language. In support of St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) continuing effort to recruit and retain experienced teachers, SLPS and the St. Lucie Classroom Teachers’ Association/Classified Unit have agreed to remove contract language that limits the years of experience awarded to returning DROP retirees. Previously, returning DROP retirees had a cap of five years on the experience for which they could receive credit. New language removes the cap and now qualified returning retirees can receive credit for all of their verified years of experience. Graduation Rates released by the Florida DOE show a historic and unprecedented measure of success for St. Lucie Public Schools. The District is ranked fifth overall in Florida and is the highest ranking district on the Treasure Coast with an overall graduation rate of 90.1 percent. St. Lucie Public Schools obtained a Math/Science Partnership (MSP) grant focused on increasing science content knowledge. This grant provided twenty-five teachers with the opportunity to participate in the U-Futures program. Nine of these teachers continued, and through the grant along with the generosity of the University of Florida, they completed their Master of Arts in Education (MAE) in Science Education free of charge. C.A. Moore Instructor Nardi Routten recently stood before the Florida Cabinet as a teacher of distinction so that Governor Rick Scott could recognize her with the Shine Award. This prestigious award is presented to teachers and administrators in Florida who make significant contributions to the field of education. Robert Golden has been heralded by many as a hero, a courageous individual, a compassionate humanitarian; he is a senior at Port St. Lucie High School who was on his way home from school one afternoon in December when he witnessed an injured motorcyclist. Realizing the situation was dire, Robert stepped forward into the midst of onlookers, asked for a belt to create a tourniquet to help stop the bleeding until first responders could arrive on scene.
