TALLAHASSEE, Fla., October 29, 2018 – The Florida Department of Education, Florida Education Foundation (FEF) and independent booksellers across the state have joined together to host Re-book to Re-build: Hurricane Relief Fundraiser. Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers participated in district-wide professional development on Friday October 26th. CTE teachers collaborated on lesson plans and activities to enhance the college and career readiness of students.

Since 1989, National Young Readers Week has been an annual event held during the second week of November to raise awareness around the importance of reading. The event was co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. On Saturday, November 3rd, the Jessica Clinton Foundation and the Florida Health Department in St. Lucie County will host FREE heart screenings for students ages 5 to 20. Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and SLPS partnered to provide training for employees in the nationally recognized program — Stop the Bleed. Participants were afforded an opportunity for hands-on experiences in how to perform life-saving measures in critical situations.

Each year, the Florida Council for the Social Studies honors educators across the state at their annual conference. Joe Curatolo (Treasure Coast High School), Heather Prince (Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition), and Jacqueline Baptiste-Harris (Village Green Environmental Studies School) were recognized at the 61st annual conference as the Outstanding Social Studies Teachers of the Year for St. Lucie County. Administrators across the district nominated teachers from their schools to be considered for this honor.  Leadership and drive to bring quality lessons were qualities shared of these educators, and all are well deserving of this recognition.

The 2018 Giving Concert served a two-fold purpose.  Middle and high school choral groups from across the District provided the gift of music for audience members while audience members, in turn, donated food items to GracePacks for the organization’s weekend food program.  Special thanks to all who supported this year’s event!

FortifyFL – a new safety app is LIVE. Any student, educator, parent or member of the public can report school safety concerns directly to law enforcement and school administrators anonymously and easily through the FortifyFL app or www.getfortifyfl.com. The Florida Legislature directed this tool’s development in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. The app, which is available for download on Apple and Android mobile devices, is critical to ensuring all Florida schools are safe environments where students and educators can experience and share the joy of learning without fear. The 7th annual Giving Concert to benefit Grace Packs is this Thurs. at Lincoln Park Academy’s Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the concert, boasting area choral groups, will begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is a non-perishable food item. #StLucieStrong

Bands from across the District took to the field at Lawnwood Stadium on Saturday, October 20th for the 2nd Annual Marching Band Showcase. Audience members were entertained as students performed a wide array of tunes as individual school bands and as a collective group of musicians for the grand finale under the direction of special guest conductor, St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent.

Law Day is recognized on May 1 each year, and this year’s Law Day contest theme is Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.  The Friends of the Rupert J. Smith Law Library provide opportunities for teachers and students to connect with this theme and express their thoughts on the topic in many forms through the annual Law Day Contest.
