Each year, the Florida Council for the Social Studies honors educators across the state at their annual conference.  11th grade US History teacher at Treasure Coast High School, Joe Curatolo, was recognized at the 61st annual conference as the Outstanding High School Social Studies Teacher of the Year for St. Lucie County.  Administrators across the district nominated teachers from their schools to be considered for this honor.  Mr. Curatolo’s leadership and drive to bring quality lessons to his students made him a great choice for our high school winner.  

FortifyFL – a new safety app is LIVE. Any student, educator, parent or member of the public can report school safety concerns directly to law enforcement and school administrators anonymously and easily through the FortifyFL app or www.getfortifyfl.com. The Florida Legislature directed this tool’s development in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. The app, which is available for download on Apple and Android mobile devices, is critical to ensuring all Florida schools are safe environments where students and educators can experience and share the joy of learning without fear. The 7th annual Giving Concert to benefit Grace Packs is this Thurs. at Lincoln Park Academy’s Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the concert, boasting area choral groups, will begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is a non-perishable food item. #StLucieStrong

Bands from across the District took to the field at Lawnwood Stadium on Saturday, October 20th for the 2nd Annual Marching Band Showcase. Audience members were entertained as students performed a wide array of tunes as individual school bands and as a collective group of musicians for the grand finale under the direction of special guest conductor, St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent.

Law Day is recognized on May 1 each year, and this year’s Law Day contest theme is Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.  The Friends of the Rupert J. Smith Law Library provide opportunities for teachers and students to connect with this theme and express their thoughts on the topic in many forms through the annual Law Day Contest. Stop The Bleed is a nationwide campaign to empower individuals to act quickly to save lives.  According the the Department of Homeland Security, it can take less than five minutes for someone to bleed out after an accident.  EMS and other forms of emergency rescue often take longer to arrive on the scene.  It is vital that everyone has the knowledge and the tools to stop bleeding before it is too late.  The Stop the Bleed Campaign is critical to saving lives in America. October is recognized as National Bullying Prevention Month.  The statistics associated with bullying are staggering across the United States.  More than one out of every five students reports being bullied at some point in their educational career. As part of our work to address social and emotional learning throughout the district, our goal is to decrease the number by developing strategies that reduce bullying and increase attention to the issue.  Increased focus on awareness and prevention will help everyone understand that bullying by any means will not be tolerated. October’s School Board Meeting provided an opportunity to spotlight the services of Mr. Brown, a dedicated member of the Transportation Team, who goes the extra mile for his students and our schools.  Mr. Brown was recommended for a STAR Award based upon his outstanding service to provide assistance and support for the safe transit of students to and from schools. Thank you, Mr. Brown, for being that ray of light for so many in our District!
