Fort Pierce Westwood High School’s Makeda-Ione Brome has been nominated for the 2019-2020 national LifeChanger of the Year award.  Brome was nominated by her colleagues for her leadership and selfless dedication. She is dedicated to helping both students and colleagues achieve excellence. St. Lucie Public Schools and Lego Education have formed a valuable partnership that supports students’ exploration in STEM education. This partnership was recently recognized at the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards Ceremony.   This year marks the 31st anniversary of the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards, and all the 2019 Honorees were noted for going above and beyond to uphold the legacy of past recipients.  Student outcomes and futures will improve throughout the state as a result of professional and personal endeavors of school and business partnerships.     

Congratulations to Mrs. Felicia Nixon and Mr. Adrian Ocampo for representing St. Lucie County as 2019- 2020 Dr. Brian Dassler Leadership Academy participants. Dr. Brian Dassler Leadership Academy, is a year-long, job-embedded professional learning opportunity designed to deepen the leaders’ skills for improving instruction. Over 160 principals and principal supervisors from 53 districts in Florida applied for this opportunity. The Academy represents the top educational leaders statewide, and it is an honor to have them represent the District.

St. Lucie Public Schools is looking for residents to serve on the Referendum Citizens Advisory Committee.  The Committee’s sole duty will be to provide oversight to ensure that the referendum funds are used for the purposes described in the referendum ballot language.  On April 23, 2019, voters approved a 1 mil property tax to raise teacher pay and retain high quality teachers, improve school safety with school resource officers in every school, expand mental health services and preserve important school programs. St. Lucie County was awarded a County Government Best Practices Award from the Florida Counties Foundation during the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) Annual Conference in Orange County last week. St. Lucie County received the award for Student Perks Coffee Cart program and was among seven counties honored during the FAC Celebration Dinner. The Oxbow Eco-Center will offer its premier Art of Puppetry Camp this summer for children ages 8 to 12, running July 29 through Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will explore the many kinds of puppets with the help of professional puppeteers from around the state. Both IBEX Puppetry and Katie Adams’ Make Believe Theater will offer workshops on storytelling, the history of puppetry and puppet-making. Campers will build a variety of puppets, including giant dragonfly hand puppets, shadow puppets with moveable parts and sandhill crane marionettes. This year’s SLPS Class of 2019 is nearly 3,000 strong, and there is a lot to be proud of. Students earned scholarships totaling $25,801,907, 186 students earned their AA Degrees while in high school, and the District assigned 75 “A Promise Is A Promise” contracts to students planning to seek careers as educators.
