St. Lucie County was awarded a County Government Best Practices Award from the Florida Counties Foundation during the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) Annual Conference in Orange County last week. St. Lucie County received the award for Student Perks Coffee Cart program and was among seven counties honored during the FAC Celebration Dinner. In partnership with St. Lucie Public Schools, the Board of County Commissioners created a weekly coffee cart program, giving students the opportunity to run a coffee shop inside the County Administration Complex, offering real-world experience and providing much needed snacks and coffee to county employees. The Oxbow Eco-Center will offer its premier Art of Puppetry Camp this summer for children ages 8 to 12, running July 29 through Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will explore the many kinds of puppets with the help of professional puppeteers from around the state. Both IBEX Puppetry and Katie Adams’ Make Believe Theater will offer workshops on storytelling, the history of puppetry and puppet-making. Campers will build a variety of puppets, including giant dragonfly hand puppets, shadow puppets with moveable parts and sandhill crane marionettes. This year’s SLPS Class of 2019 is nearly 3,000 strong, and there is a lot to be proud of. Students earned scholarships totaling $25,801,907, 186 students earned their AA Degrees while in high school, and the District assigned 75 “A Promise Is A Promise” contracts to students planning to seek careers as educators.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL — Growth continues in St. Lucie Public Schools according to the Florida Department of Education’s release of Grade 3 ELA Scores. The District saw a four-percentage point increase over last year’s benchmark; furthermore, 62% of the County’s traditional schools increased in the number of students who scored at proficiency levels (Levels 3, 4, and 5). Bayshore Elementary showed the greatest gain in the District over last year with a 21% gain. Other schools with large increases include Floresta Elementary with a 16% increase; Samuel S. St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Kindergarten open enrollment is scheduled to re-open with 24/7 online access. The registration window will begin on May 20, 2019 and remain open until June 21, 2019.
