Superintendent Dr. Jon R. Prince was joined by Big Apple Owner Scott Vanduzer, Representative Dana Trabulsy, and Sean Boyle, CEO of the Children’s Services Council of SLC to announce Fairlawn Elementary as the Big Apple Read to Succeed Program CHAMPIONS. They will receive $10,000 to support student achievement along with a school-wide celebration!
On Monday, April 8, 2024, there will be a solar eclipse viewable locally from approximately 1:45 pm to 4:15 pm. In our area, approximately 50% of the sun will be blocked. The day of the eclipse is a great learning opportunity for students and adults, but it can be dangerous to the eyes if proper care is not taken. Therefore, we must establish precautions for the safety and protection of students and employees. Any outdoor teacher-directed lessons to view the eclipse must utilize approved safety eyewear for all students and must be principal/district-approved. The South County Career Fair was held on February 27th at the MIDFLorida Event Center. Approximately 400 juniors and seniors from Mosaic Digital Academy, Port St. Lucie High, SLW Centennial, and Treasure Coast High were in attendance. Students were able to meet and chat with company representatives, ask questions about their company and careers, interview, and possibly land internships. The goal was to expose students to the companies and businesses in St. Lucie County, provide them with the opportunity to learn and explore specific industries, gain the confidence needed to approach adults and start conversations, interview, and practice soft skills. On January 25, 2024, SLPS held its annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) College Fair at the Fenn Center. This fair hosted representatives from the HBCU and HSI colleges who provided program, application, and scholarship information to prospective students which included SLPS current seniors and juniors. Dan McCarty Middle School also participated. This event was a wonderful opportunity for students and SLPS thanks all participating staff and universities for a great and informative event!

On Monday, January 15, 2024, St. Lucie Public Schools, along with SLPS Superintendent and Board Members, participated in Fort Pierce’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. The theme of this year was “Dream, Believe, Achieve” and was Grand Marshaled by Dr. Keven G. Perry and Dr. Christine Taylor. Schools honored Dr. King and his dreams of equality by creating floats that showcased his principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change.
