At Southport Middle School, Physical Education classes host an array of sports. Southport students have the opportunity to learn how to improve their health in a variety of ways.  During third quarter our physical education coaches are focused on flag football, whiffle ball, and handball.  Twice a week, our coaches switch things up by also offering weight training, capture the flag, and a variety of outdoor sports. Southport Middle School is overflowing with gratitude for our amazing bus drivers!  On Thursday, when the temperatures were in the 40s, the bus drivers of Southport Middle School were greeted with a cup of hot cocoa and a special note to keep them warm.  The note read, “A special thank you from us, because you do so much on the bus.  Wrap your taste buds around this cozy hot cocoa-it’s like a warm hug in a mug.”   Southport Middle School staff is extremely thankful for all the work our bus drivers put in each and every day.  Huge shout out … Read More

At Southport Middle School, students celebrated their PM2 growth with yummy treats!  Students were rewarded for making growth in one subject (reading or math) with chips and Takis.  However, students who made growth in both subjects (reading and math) were rewarded with chips/Takis as well as a Nacho Bar.  The Nacho Bar consisted of chips, meat, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and jalapenos.   Students enjoyed creating their own nachos. To deepen their understanding of the rock cycle, Mr. Johnson’s science classes participated in rock cycle stations. The five stations consisted of a Crayon Rock Cycle Lab, Rock Cycle WebQuest, Rock Cycle Nearpod, Rock Cycle Comic, and a Rock Cycle Story. During the lab station students used a crayon to depict the stages of the rock cycle. Students got to press down on the shaved crayon pieces mimicking the pressure that it would experience on earth. PE teachers at Southport Middle School taught their students how to do hands-on CPR and what to do in case of a medical emergency. The students also learned how the AED works and where they are located on our campus.  The students worked in teams of 3-4 to practice performing CPR and using the AED. Thank you to the American Heart Association for donating the dummies and the practice AEDs.

At Southport Middle School, students in Ms. Banken’s class were highly engaged in a Dots and Boxes activity.  8th graders in pre-algebra had to solve task cards correctly to earn one line, with the goal of creating full squares. Students worked in teams of 2 with one student being the player and one being the coach.  Only the player could hold the pencil and work out the problem while the coach could offer verbal guidance and encouragement.  Once the team had answered the question accurately the player marked a line on the board. Southport Middle School had their annual back-to-school pep rally.  During this time students gathered in the gym to listen to SPMS expectations.  Students were also made aware of the character trait for Q1, COURTEOUS.  Students and teachers engaged in some friendly competition to see which team had the best cheer.  Students and teachers also participated in relay races trying to rack up points for their teams.  There was a special appearance made by the school mascot, Ivan the Ibis.  This back-to-school pep rally gears up our SPMS students and increases their school spirit.

Teachers had a fun time engaged in a learning activity on empathy where they worked in pairs on a paper plate activity.  This activity demonstrated that you do not always need to know the full picture in order to have empathy.  “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler.

Southport Middle School teachers and staff welcomed our students during open house.  Students met their teachers and visited their new classrooms.  Our new 6th-grade families met in the gym for an orientation presentation, which included information regarding SPMS expectations, curriculum, and school activities/clubs.  Families had the opportunity to clarify transportation needs, sign up for SAC/PTO, and complete meal applications.  Families also took this opportunity to purchase school shirts so our students would be ready for school on Monday!  To beat the heat, our families finished off the night with a refreshing treat from Kona Ice!
