Village Green Environmental Studies School was proud to participate in a Fun Run to benefit St. Lucie County Public Schools and the Education Foundation on Saturday, April 30th. We had over 90 students participate in weekly practice leading up to the event with 71 registered for the event. We are proud of the students and their families that attended! A special thank you goes out to Coach Copeland and Coach Saadah for taking on this venture for our school.

Fifth graders in Ms. Broderick & Mrs. Church’s class researched what companies can do to help the environment, wrote about what they can do at home and at school, and then brainstormed what they think the Earth will look like in 30 years to celebrate Earth Day!
St. Lucie Public School Culinary Arts students cooked at Cinco de Mayo festivities. Culinary students from St. Lucie West Centennial High and Port St. Lucie High Preapprenticeship along with their teachers Chef Chris Gedke-Balachak and Chef Roland Foerster were the highlight at the Monarch Country Club’s Cinco de Mayo event. Third grade students made junk-bots! They used materials they were going to recycle at home and then up-cycled them to build creative robots. They designed their plan, wrote out their steps, and named their creations!
Once a month, each of the grade level teams at Southport Middle School selects a special service project that benefits the community as students learn about the importance of volunteerism. Most recently, the seventh grade Panthers’ service projects had students learning about the basics of gardening and they spent the day beautifying the school campus by pulling weeds and planting new shrubs. The eighth grade Gators collected items and provided backpacks for the homeless that included non-perishable foods and other necessities like blankets, clothing, and various utensils. Kindergarten, first & second grade students participated in a variety of creative Earth Day projects. All students brainstormed many ways they could take care of our Earth and make it a better place!
Since we are the Mariposa Monarchs, what better way to learn about our mascot than in person? Assistant Principal Ms. Patton was awarded a grant for our school from the Educational Foundation. This grant has helped us to buy new books about butterflies and their life cycle. We were also able to build a beautiful garden that has already attracted Monarch, Zebra Longwings, and white butterflies. Some of the Monarch butterflies laid eggs on our milkweed, and before long our plants were covered in caterpillars! Middle School Visual Arts students collaborated with the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance, St. Lucie Environmental Resources Department and Oxbow Eco-Center to create up-cycling sculptures for the St. Lucie Earth Day Festival. Students learned facts about recyclable materials and being good stewards of our natural resources and environment. Students were provided recyclable items by the St. Lucie Environmental Resources Department and created their up-cycled sculptures by integrating objects like metal clothes hangers, plastic water and soda bottles, bottle caps, plastic beads, foam, textiles, and paper products to help create their animal forms. St. Lucie West K-8 students, teachers, staff, and volunteers enjoyed a warm, breezy, spring day at the annual PTO sponsored Spring Carnival! Everyone enjoyed a variety of bounce houses, fun and competitive games, a petting zoo, train rides, a dunk tank, and delicious treats. All reveled in the camaraderie and friendships that have been built throughout the year before culminating with the end-of-the-year assessments. A BIG THANK YOU to SLWK 8’s PTO for planning such a memorable event for our Shark family.
Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies’ fourth graders wrapped up their science units for the year with a study of the earth, the moon, and the constellations. Students studied models and the movement of the earth and the moon. Fourth graders depicted the phases of the moon around the earth with a 3D model and took turns demonstrating its movement.
Sixth grade students at CAST used recycled materials, like the used pages of their consumable science book, to create posters to raise awareness about Earth Day!

Fourth grade reviewed skills to rock the FSA with the 2nd annual Glow Day! The kids had a blast glowing while reviewing all they have learned this year. We can’t wait for them to “glow” when they show what they know on the FSA!! ?
First grade had a Poetry Café! Each student in the class was able to get on stage and read aloud a poem of their choosing. We were lucky enough to have so many wonderful spectators observe all our hard work. Thank you to all that came to share in our special moments!
FPC Poison Pens Win AGAIN! Fort Pierce Central’s Poison Pens won first place in the state during Jason Taylor’s Louder Than a Bomb Spoken Word Poetry Slam! This is the second time they have taken home the top prize. We are very proud of our poets: Laura Eugene, Trinity Scott, Emerson Dent, Alli Smith, Jay Valentin, and Taylor Prescott!!! The National Energy Education Development (NEED) project congratulated Morningside Elementary for an outstanding energy education project and selected our school as the Florida School of the Year. The mission of the NEED project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating networks of students, teachers, educators, and business, government, and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs. Fifth graders completed a project that included learning and teaching others about the science of energy. Students hosted an energy expo at the Earth Day festival at the Oxbow center last weekend.
Mariposa Elementary recently held pep rallies for their third, fourth, and fifth graders. Mrs. Whitaker and Ms. Patton led the group with several cheers. Kindergarten, first, and second graders showed their support with posters and cards, and teachers prepared skits and cheers as well.
Family, friends, former students, and colleagues through the years, gathered to honor Mr. Jim LeBon and celebrate his 40 years of service as a band director at his annual Spring Band Concert. The evening began with a surprise reception with family, friends, and colleagues as well as performances in the courtyard by Port St. Lucie High School and Treasure Coast High School bands, where many of his former band students are now in attendance. St. Lucie Public Schools Criminal Justice senior completers were afforded the opportunity to be recognized by President Leslie Kristof of Keiser University, Judge Shaniek Mills-Maynard, Port St. Lucie Police Department’s Assistant Chief Richard DelToro, Fort Pierce Police Department Deputy Chief Kenny Norris, St. Lucie Public School’s Board Members (Dr. Mills, Mrs. Hawley, and Mr. Kelly), Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jon Prince, and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Helen Wild.
