Demi Barnett, a kindergarten student in Isabelle Brunache’s class at Weatherbee Elementary enjoyed a special moment with Santa as she received the first gift of Christmas as a part of the kindergarten’s Polar Express literacy activity. Santa arrived with the support of the St. Lucie County Fire Department complete with a police escort. Snow fell from above to complete this special moment for Weatherbee students. What a wonderful way to make literature come alive.
Twenty students were invited to attend this game based on the highest amount of sales for the Fall Fundraiser. Jar’Breanna Frierson and Samuel Villalobos from Dorian Newbern’s first grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary are busy creating their own gingerbread houses. Students were allowed to express their creativity and decorate the outside to suit their own tastes.
Bayshore Elementary School pre-K students in Greta Wester’s class had a guest reader. Students were excited when Michael J. Lannon, Superintendent of St. Lucie County Schools, stopped by to support literacy and read to the students.
Bayshore Elementary School students participated in a PBS winter raffle. Students earn jazzy cash by showing their SPOTS! They were able to purchase raffle tickets to try and win a basketball, camera, art set, ripstik skateboard or a twister game. Fifth grade students at St. Lucie Elementary have been working on many science lab projects this year. Warren Wiley, Pedro Escobedo, and Salvador Leon in Leigh Bretherick’s class are shown working on an assignment using tools that represent different bird beaks and the types of food they would be able to eat.
Northport K-8 instructors are pleased to begin literary instruction in a new and fresh arena for 2012. Northport teachers Jennifer Babcock Carey and Deb Mock completed a grant to begin work on a literacy plaza, an outdoor classroom setting for Northport K-8 School. Instructor Valerie Niewieroski began work hand painting the four seasons display which will include literary quotes to inspire young students to read. The literacy plaza will be completed on January 21 and an Open House will be held on Friday, January 27, 2012. Northport K-8 middle grades science instructor and science fair program leader, Dr. Laura Woodworth, escorted groups of students through the school science fair exhibits recently. The exhibits are a culmination of the school based science fair programming. The program is an authentic assessment of classroom learning and an excellent demonstration of student knowledge of science in action. On the last day of school prior to winter break, Floresta Elementary School students participated in the Positive Behavior Support Chance Opportunities to Win. Students used their Dolphin Dollars to purchase opportunities to win a variety of great prizes to reinforce and reward students for making good choices. Floresta t-shirts, class pizza parties, lunch with a friend on stage, and tickets to Lion Country Safari, Chuck E. A third grade class at Osceola Magnet School in Vero Beach adopted HeatherNesbitt’s first grade classroom for a “give back” Christmas. The Osceola students all wrote two letters, wrapped a book and tied a holiday pencil on each package. It was truly amazing to watch the students open their gifts, read their letters and get really excited about a new book! As part of a writing lesson, GCELA students wrote thank you letters to the Osceola Magnet School students.

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion held its second quarter Outstanding Cadet Board recently. The Outstanding Cadet Board is a competition between cadets on two different levels. One level contains junior cadets, and the other is comprised of the program’s NCO corps. Throughout the competition, the cadets are asked various questions pertaining to JROTC, the Army, the JROTC curriculum, and current events. The winners of the board were cadet Private First Class Zhane Simmonds, pictured right, and cadet Sergeant Arlene Mabry. Congratulations to the two cadets, and good luck to cadets during the third Outstanding Cadet Board!

Thanks to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8058, students had the opportunity to enter an essay contest and win cash prizes. Students who enter can win at various levels, excel to the national competition, and possibly win $30,000 and a free trip to Washington D.C. Voice of Democracy is the theme of these essays. The annual Giving Tree program at Rivers Edge Elementary made the season a little brighter for six local organizations. Each grade group decorates a tree and collects gifts and much needed items for a chosen organization. Represented this year were the Humane Society, Castle, Care-Net, Quantum House, Sarah’s Kitchen and the U.S. Military. Pictured is Lt.Col. Fort Pierce Central JROTC Cobra Battalion hosted its annual Angel Tree project which reaches out to the community and gives assistance to many families in the area who are struggling in today’s economy. Annually the Cobra Battalion help put smiles on children’s faces for Christmas and gives them something positive to remember. Mr. Todd Smith the school Principal and Mr. Arthur Jamison one of FPC’s Assistant Principal’s attended the special event. Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts’ new VPK students prepare for their first performance as part of the annual Holiday Spectacular. The students danced the “Penguin Dance” while the junior band played “I’m a Little Penguin”, written by sixth grade student Jessica Lopez.
The teachers of Ft. Pierce Magnet School of the Arts took time to work at the McDonalds Restaurant on Delaware Avenue as a fundraiser for the school. Teachers worked from 4 to 7 PM, with all proceeds going to the school. Pictured, from left, are third grade teacher Kelly Gersh, and guidance counselor Angela Flynn learning to take customer orders. A special thanks to the management and staff of this McDonalds for making this an enjoyable and profitable experience for the school.
