Fairlawn Student Gives Back

During his distance learning challenge class, Mikhail organized a fundraiser to benefit students in Saint Lucie County.  His fundraiser ended up providing 133 laptops to students through the Education Foundation and over 1,000 meals to families through Feeding America.  He is truly an amazing individual.

Fairlawn Student Discovers Hometown Information

Mrs. Ridle, media specialist, explained to Shirley Gomez that when reading graphic novels, it’s important to ‘read’ the pictures AND the words.  The picture of the map shows that the location of the popular graphic novel, Sunny Side Up, takes place in our hometown! If we hadn’t looked closely, we would have missed that really cool detail!    

Fairlawn Student Council Gives Back

On Saturday, April 23rd, Fairlawn Elementary’s Student Council met to help beautify the campus. The boys and girls collected trash around the school grounds. Following the clean-up, the students made bracelets and keychains for the Fairlawn teachers and staff in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you to JBR Exteriors for sponsoring the event.

Fairlawn Says Fairwell to Dedicated Family Members

The Fairlawn family said their final farewells to some of their Fairlawn family that will be retiring this year. Pictured below in the front row from left to right are the retirees, Madeline Bell, Carolyn Johnson, Jan Mayr, and Steve Marcorelle. Not pictured but also retiring is Dessie Rogers. In the back row are Pat Gascoigne the Assistant Principal and Jennifer Hedeen the Principal. Collectively the retirees have 157 years in St Lucie County Schools. Thank you for all your years of dedication and service.  You will be missed!

Fairlawn Says Cheese

Fairlawn students in Ms. Buck’s third-grade class were introduced to area this week in math. Students used Cheez-Its as square units to measure the area of different shapes! It was a delicious lesson!

Fairlawn Receives National Recognition

Fairlawn Elementary School received a $1000.00 check from the National VFW.  The State Commander,  T. Wayne Makham, presented the check to Principal Jennifer Hedeen at a faculty meeting with Superintendent Genelle Yost, Dr. Kevin Perry, and Lydia Martin in attendance.   This donation to Fairlawn Elementary was a result of Shirley Helton (retired 5th grade teacher) receiving the national honor of VFW Teacher of the Year 2014.  Mrs. Helton graciously accepted this award recently in St. Louis, Missouri.  Mrs. Helton was nominated by Nell Moyers to the local chapter and then continued on to win at the state and national levels.    … Read More

Fairlawn Participates in the Empty Bowl Project

Fairlawn is participating in this year’s annual Empty Bowl Project. Thirty students in Mr. Gelardo’s art class will be creating clay pottery bowls for the event to be held on Saturday, March 12th, at the Ft. Pierce Farmers’ Market. Each bowl will sell for $15 and will benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Every dollar raised will provide 7 meals to people in our community. Students who create the bowls can purchase them first or they will be taken to the event and sold along with the many other bowls created by the other schools in our district. Fairlawn Odyssey Team is Going to State

The Odyssey of the Mind team from Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School performed at Regional Competition at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL.  The team not only qualified for state, they received the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award.  This award is the highest award in the Odyssey of the Mind program.  For this award, judges are asked to only make nominations if exceptional creativity is exhibited.  Comments on their award included, “The Division I team went above and beyond the requirements of the problem.  The team was incredibly insightful and advanced for elementary students.”  Congratulations, Fairlawn Odyssey Team on a job … Read More

Fairlawn kindergartners learn about Columbian culture

Kindergartners from Fairlawn Elementary recently experienced Colombian culture by watching a Colombian dance company preform many traditional dance from Columbia at the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce.  The students were mesmerized by the music and the brightness of the costumes.  It was truly a wonderful experience for these young students.

Fairlawn kindergartners celebrate 100 days of school

Kindergarten students at Fairlawn Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school by spending 100 minutes outside. Students completed centers which included finding 100 pennies, jumping rope 100 times, and writing their numbers to 100 by 10s with sidewalk chalk.

Fairlawn Hosts Student Led Conferences

During the week of November 27th Fairlawn hosted student-led conferences for grades 1 to 5.  Families were invited by the students to come and see all that they have been learning, including their academic goals and progress.  Our students did an amazing job leading their conferences and welcoming their families.

Fairlawn Goes Pink

Fairlawn Elementary hosted their annual Think Pink fundraiser. Staff and students can wear as many pink items as they can to raise money for local breast cancer patients!

Fairlawn Fraction Fun in Second Grade

Fairlawn second-grade students in Mrs. Chowdhury’s class discovered the world of fractions.  The students sorted fractions based on whether they were partitioned equally and worked cooperatively to solve problems.  By the end of the lesson, students were able to identify academic vocabularies such as denominator, numerator, partitioned equal, halves, thirds, and fourths.  Our second-grade students are now confidently able to sort and identify fractions up to fourths and apply what they have learned in real-world situations, they may have even benefited from an equally partitioned giant Hershey chocolate bar to wrap up the lesson. What will they learn next?

Fairlawn Fourth Graders Tackle Math

Fourth-grade students in Mrs. Ascani’s math class participated in a stand-up, hand-up, pair-up activity to discuss place value relationships among different numbers.  Students found partners and had to explain their reasoning behind the relationships they identified between numbers.  

Fairlawn Food Drive

Fairlawn’s student council organized a food drive to benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The school in total was able to donate over 1,800 pounds of food to benefit our community. We are so proud of our Patriots!

Fairlawn is proudly celebrating Arts in Education Month with a vibrant student art exhibition displayed at the school board office on the 3rd floor. This special showcase highlights the creativity and talent of Fairlawn’s young artists, whose work will be on display through April 10th. Visitors can enjoy a variety of imaginative and inspiring pieces created by students across multiple grade levels. Fairlawn Elementary’s Winter Wonderland Field Days

Fairlawn Elementary School capped off the year with a delightful Field Day extravaganza, held just before the winter break. This unforgettable event unfolded over three days on the school’s brand-new field, creating an atmosphere of excitement and joy for all. Kindergarten and first grade kicked off the festivities, followed by second and third grades, with fourth and fifth grades bringing the celebration to a close. Each group reveled in a day of fun-filled activities, from relay races to tug-of-war, fostering camaraderie and laughter. First-grade students at Fairlawn Elementary wrapped up Read Across America Week in a fun and creative way! To celebrate their love of reading, students dressed up and participated in a special activity inspired by the beloved stories of Dr. Seuss. As part of the celebration, the first graders made a delicious snack that looked just like the famous hat worn by the Cat in the Hat.
