HUGE congratulations are in order for the Fairlawn Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Team! In an exciting and well-deserved victory, the Fairlawn team earned 1st place at the Regional competition in their division, securing their spot at the State level. Fairlawn Elementary’s Little Miners Strike Gem-tastic Fun

Kindergarten students at Fairlawn Elementary recently went on a sparkling adventure without ever leaving campus! Diamond Del’s Mobile Gem Mining Adventure visited the school to give students a hands-on, in-school field trip full of discovery and excitement. Students had a blast sifting through mining trays to uncover colorful gems and special stones hidden in the sand. Little Heart, Big Impact: Fairlawn Kindergartner Helps Churches Around the World Ruby Charles, a kindergartner at Fairlawn Elementary School, recently showed that even the youngest students can make a big difference. Ruby worked hard to raise money as part of a special fundraiser organized through her church, Temple Baptist Church’s Fort Pierce Campus. Fairlawn Elementary’s Helton VFW’s national Citizenship Teacher of the Year

Fairlawn Elementary School fifth grade teacher Shirley Helton learned February 4, 2014, she has been named the 2014 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) national Citizenship Teacher of the Year. Helton was awarded the state honor in January at the organization’s state conference in Orlando. Helton expects formal recognition from the organization later in February.

Radio Station “The Breeze” and Andy Hall of Seaside Smiles Pediatric Dentistry presented the award for the Treasure Coast Teacher of the Month to Kyle McCleary, kindergarten teacher at Fairlawn Elementary School in Fort Pierce. The radio station honors a teacher who has made a difference with an official “Teacher of the Month” certificate, a formal presentation, a pizza party for his/her class courtesy of The VanDuzer Foundation through Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce, a class visit to the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast, and a gift basket from Teacher’s Pet and More.

Fairlawn Elementary students Rodney Belezair, Jocelyn Ruiz, Lauryn Chesney, and Liam Felix  in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class won first place in the Florida State Elementary Division of the Florida Stock Market Exchange Challenge. Fairlawn Elementary students win 2012 DAR American History Essay Contest

Fairlawn Elementary students in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class received top honors in the 2012 DAR American History Essay Contest, sponsored by the Cora Stickney Harper Branch of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The district winners for the American History Essay competition pictured, from left, are second place winner AnsleyBrowning, first place winner M’KenziShaw-Hampton, and third place winner Liam Felix. Fairlawn Elementary students sweep DAR essay contest

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently held an awards ceremony where district winners of their annual essay contest were recognized, and students in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class at Fairlawn Elementary School took top honors. Pictured are Carli Israel, left, who won first place for her essay on The Boston Tea Party, and Morgan Adkison, who took second place for her essay on Children During the American Revolutionary War. Carli’s essay has been submitted to the state for judging.

Fairlawn Elementary students send treats to troops

Students in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class at Fairlawn Elementary School are corresponding with U.S. military troops stationed in Afghanistan. They write letters and send treats to the troops to boost morale, and also enjoy receiving news from the soldiers. The troops have sent books, pictures and other artifacts from Afghanistan. The students enjoy their community efforts to help our soldiers abroad.

Fairlawn Elementary students recognized for state contest win

A team of Fairlawn Elementary School fifth grade students, along with their teacher Shirley Helton, were recognized at the March 11, 2014, St. Lucie County School Board meeting for winning a 12-week competition throughout the state of Florida buying and selling stocks. They used math, reading, and writing skills to research, invest and calculate how to make profits in today’s stock market. They learned real life experiences as they bought and sold stocks with their $100,000.00 portfolio. Fairlawn Elementary students make poppies to honor Veteran’s Day

In celebration of Veteran’s Day, Fairlawn Elementary School students had a nice surprise when a Mystery Reader came to school and read to them about Moina Belle Michael, The Poppy Lady. Students learned about Moina Michael’s work to establish the red poppy as a symbol to honor and remember soldiers. Fairlawn Elementary students learn about Native Americans

Fifth grade students at Fairlawn Elementary School are researching and learning about Native Americans, their dwellings, clothing, foods, and location of different tribes. Students researched and wrote a report, created a natural habitat for display, and gave an oral presentation of their projects. Fairlawn Elementary students learn about disabilities through books

Fairlawn Elementary School recently celebrated the 11th Annual Inclusive Schools Week. Media Specialist Buster Nelson read a different book about children with disabilities to each grade level. He read Leo the Late Bloomer about Developmental Disabilities to kindergarten, Andy Finds a Turtle  about physical disabilities to first grade, Danny and the Merry Go Round  about Cerebral Palsy to a second grade, Luna and the Big Blur about visual impairments to third grade, Knots on a Counting Rope about blindness to fourth grade, and View from our Shoes about siblings of children who have brothers or sisters with special needs.
