Students, Families, and Staff came together to celebrate our annual Valentine’s Dance! The dance was a success with a photo booth, face painting, and tasty treats! The DJ played hit after hit and everyone danced the night away!
Dr. Kevin Perry and Mrs. Genelle Yost spent time observing Mrs. Lisa McGuire’s third grade class playing chess. The chess program called “First Move” was implemented this school year for all Second and Third grade classes at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School. Talented St. Lucie County school students are invited to try-out for the 19th annual St. Lucie County School Board Summer Musical on Wednesday, March 4th in the Port St. Lucie High school auditorium at 1201 SE Lennard Road, beginning at 6 pm. Fort Pierce Central (FPC) High’s BETA Club celebrated a winning performance January 16-17 in Orlando at the State BETA Conference. They placed 3rd out of 17 teams in the Quiz Bowl Competition and qualified to compete at National BETA Convention this summer in Nashville, TN. Since this was the first time they participated at State Convention the team was thrilled with their results! Congratulations Cobras! Barbara Ricks, the Business Education teacher at St. Lucie West K-8, accepted the STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Award at the School Board Meeting on February 10, 2015. Mrs. Ricks is one dedicated teacher and employee. She is the Business Partner Coordinator, member of the School Advisory Council, member of the District Advisory Council, Step Team Coach, FBLA Advisor, Facilitator for Title I tutoring, STEM Rap Battle Coordinator, and the former MLK Committee Coordinator. Jacqueline was honored as the 2015 recipient of the Governor’s Excellence in Education Award for the elementary (K-5) category. This award was accompanied by a check for $1500. Students in VPK through fifth grade enjoyed special guest readers from the community, district personnel and volunteers that came to read their favorite stories to students in classrooms.
Palm Pointe Educational Research School won the St. Lucie County Middle School Soccer Championship on Saturday, February 7. The coach of the team was Mr. Robert Santoro, Physical Education teacher and athletic director at the school. “It was truly a team effort throughout the day as both the offense and defense had outstanding performances,” said Mrs. Santoro. St. Lucie Elementary families and students enjoyed our celebration of Literacy Week when they received free books during lunch in the courtyard.
Literacy Week was a huge success at Weatherbee Elementary. We had several planned events that helped promote literacy and get the students excited about reading. To start the week off, students participated in the “Million Minute Marathon” where WBE read 17,421 minutes! Another powerful activity was the “Buddy Reading” between different grade levels. It was great to see the older students teaching the younger ones and the little ones sharing their fluency with older students who they look up to. Students at Savanna Ridge Elementary enjoyed celebrating Literacy Week 2015 with Books, Bingo and Baked Ziti night. Students and families came out for a delicious baked ziti dinner and played multiple rounds of Bingo. There were many smiling faces as students were able to come up on stage and pick a book of their choice after winning!
Frances K Sweet celebrated Literacy Week by inviting dads in to read to classes. The students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class enjoyed being read to by Reverend Ham. His son, Thomas, was beyond thrilled to have his dad read one of his favorite books to his class.

Students and teachers from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) along with private pre-kindergarten partners rallied in the month of January to collect dimes in support of March of Dimes March for Babies. On Wednesday, students and teachers convened at Lawnwood Stadium to run the track in segments. Collectively, the segments represented the distance of the total number of dimes collected if they were to be placed side-by-side. 58,880 dimes were collected! In distance, that equates to approximately 2.5 miles; in dollars, that equates to $5,880.00. In an effort to continually improve the safety and security of your children, St. Lucie Public Schools will be using a new visitor management system called Raptor beginning February 17th. All campus visitors, including parents and alumni, will need to have their driver’s license or military ID available. The Raptor system accesses a national database, preventing anyone who should not be on our campus from gaining access. Southport students celebrated Literacy Week with a giant book swap, popcorn, raffles, and a beautiful afternoon in the courtyard. Students were asked to bring in a gently used book they have read and enjoyed, and would recommend to a friend. There were plenty of wonderful books to choose from. The book exchange was just one of the fun ways students had the chance to celebrate literacy with their fellow classmates.
Allapattah Flats K8 hosted a fun-filled literacy event called Books and Blankets, January 15th. Reading stations included the integration of math and science. Families rotated through stations led by teachers and staff. Some stations were set up outside and teachers read to students with flashlights and lanterns. We also had a visit from some nocturnal animals. Families enjoyed reading under the stars, making crafts, and gazing into the sky with telescopes.
Four Oak Hammock Band students were selected to participate in Indian River State College’s Four County Honor Band. Each year students are selected from the band programs at all schools in Saint Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee and Indian River Counties for the Four County Honor Band.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary annually recognize the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively. Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism are prime candidates for this award.
