White City Students Explore Science

Students in Mr. Lewis’s class were building  circuits.  They were given batteries, copper wire and a light bulb and had to figure out how to use the materials to make a connection. Also, students were experimenting using M&M’s with the question “would all of the colors merge or separate”?

Weatherbee VPK Field Trip

On April 27th, Weatherbee’s VPK classes were able to go on one of three field trips to the Children’s Museum in Jensen Beach.  It was a wonderful experience for our students to be able to share and learn with other children.  They were able to dress up and look towards what future might await them.  We had some doctor’s, nurses, fire-fighters, mechanics and grocery store clerks, we also had artists, architects and many other community little helpers present.  We are a Kids at hope school so the trip only reinforced many of the conversations that we have daily with our … Read More

According to award winning children’s book author Donna Gephart, “Friday was the best school visit I’ve done in 8 years. May’s STAR Award Recipients Recognized

Mrs. Barbara Bennett and Mrs. Belkis Madera were recognized as May’s STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Award recipients at the school board meeting on May 12, 2015. Mrs. Barbara Bennett, 3rd grade teacher at Frances K. Sweet Elementary, was nominated by a parent of one of her students. The parent stated how happy and pleased she was with her daughter’s academic achievements and the great improvements Camila has made in reading and comprehension. Winners of the United Way Campaign Fundraiser

At the school board meeting on May 12th, Karen Knapp, Monte Kosoff, Horace Webb and Roxanne Wells from United Way of St. Lucie, presented plaques to the schools with the highest student and employee campaign fund raisers for 2014-2015. The winners in the Highest Student Campaign were West Gate K-8 ($1,028); SLW Centennial High ($979); Frances K. Sweet Elementary ($503); and Southern Oaks Middle ($335). The winners in the Largest Employee Giving were SLW Centennial High ($1,735); West Gate K-8 ($1,616); Morningside Elementary ($1,455); and Southport Middle ($816). Savanna Ridge VPK Families Enjoyed a Day of Learning!

Students in Ms. Fuller’s VPK class enjoyed showing their family members what a day of learning is like in their classroom.  Families enjoyed center rotations with their VPK child.  Students and parents read books in the listening center, explored reading fundamentals via online programs, used manipulatives and many other engaging activities.  Thank you to our VPK families for attending our Family VPK Day!

Chess Night at Mariposa Elementary!

Second and Third Grade students at Mariposa Elementary challenged their families and friends to chess this week! Students came to school dressed up as chess pieces, ready to teach their families how each piece moves. Families enjoyed some chess poems and a brief explanation of how to play. Then students challenged their peers and relatives to a game of chess! This family game night was made possible through a grant called “First Move,” which teaches students to play chess through online videos, computer games, and weekly chess practice. FPC SkillsUSA Chapter Business Procedure Team Win 1st Place

The Chapter Business Procedure team takes 1st place again in SkillsUSA Florida state competition. The same team placed 8th in the National competition in June 2014. The team will be unable to compete this June due to summer college orientation commitments. REE Spring Pentathlon Brings Out Parents Competitive Side!

Rivers Edge hosted over 150 parents/students/guardians at their Spring Pentathlon on Friday, April 24. Every student was invited to come out with an adult male figure in his/her life to compete in 5 events – Egg & Spoon Race, Potato Sack Race, Hippitty Hop Race, High/Low  Hurdles Race, Scooter Board Race – that required, teamwork, encouragement and a little skill. Awards were given to the top three teams in each category, but the ultimate prize was a shared memory that will surely be celebrated for years to come.

Savanna Ridge Student Council Serve Those in Need

Student Council members at Savanna Ridge helped serve meals at Matthews Café of Grace Way Village on Sunday.  They provide a healthy hot meal, every Sunday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for those in need.  What a great way for our students to show the community they care by helping others.

St. Lucie West Centennial High School Chamber Singers Perform at Tradition Field

On May 2nd, The St. Lucie West Centennial High School Chamber Singers were invited to sing the National Anthem at the opening of the St. Lucie West Mets game at Tradition Field.  Students who participate in the Chamber Singers must have completed at least one year of choral education and are selected by audition only.    The ensemble performs throughout the community for local events and charity organizations.  For more information on availability please contact Bridget Glass at bridget.glass@stlucieschools.org

Westgate Thanks the Adopt-A-Class Program

This year the Westgate Adopt-A-Class program led the county in classroom donations. More than $2,450.00 was donated to various classrooms.  The teachers would like to thank our parent community for their generosity. Special thanks goes to teacher Dawn Mealing and SAC member Dana Stonelake for working so hard to spread the word about this wonderful program.

Savanna Ridge Students and Publix Make Mothers Day Sweet!

Second grade students at Savanna Ridge Elementary partnered with Publix to help make Mother’s Day special for their loved ones.  Publix brought cakes to Savanna Ridge and helped second graders decorate them as a Mother’s Day sweet treat.  Thank you to Tina and Christine from Publix for assisting our students.

Northport presents Career and Leadership Summit

Northport VPK-8 School media specialist, Lynne Gruszka, seventh grade instructor and brand new teacher, Kendal Jo Hamblin and Maryanne Warren, student support specialist from New Horizons who is stationed at the school, collaborated recently to present a program for seventh grade Stingray students. The program was a culmination of the school’s Leadership Summit programs for middle school students that have been ongoing all year. Students have been building a list of leadership skills for the entire school year that include integrity, flexibility, passion, looking at the “big picture” and many other skills to be a great leader. LTAB Poetry Spoken Word Recognition

Students who participated in the Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) Poetry Spoken Word Competition at Nova Southeastern University were recognized at the school board meeting on April 28, 2015. LTAB was founded on a student-centered, educational philosophy geared toward young people ages 13-19. The “trick of the poetry slam is to use the guise of competition to attract interest in the telling of stories through the written word.” The most critical component of LTAB is the year-around, meaningful instruction inside the classroom with teachers who create and facilitate a safe space for individual and collective self-expression. SLC Teachers Participate in Supreme Court Justice Institute

Stephanie Isaacs, 7th Grade Civics Teacher at St. Lucie West K-8 School, and Anne Powell, 7th Grade Civics Teacher at Forest Grove Middle School, were two of 25 teachers selected from throughout Florida to attend the Supreme Court of Florida’s Justice Teaching Institute March 22-26 to learn about the state courts using a case study method. Teacher participants explored the courts and the Constitution in a four-and-a-half-day program with all seven justices serving as faculty.
